Nip Tuck was just ok last season. Hopefully they can get back to the form from the first few seasons. Damages had a great first season let's see if they can keep it up. How good is FX's original programming?? The Shield,Rescue Me,Damages,Sons of Anarchy,It's always Sunny,Nip/Tuck..all really good shows..

Glenn Close is Good in everything she takes on - she's such a great, versatile actress.. Kudoos to her. And am looking forward to the addition of William Hurt to the show - he, too, IMO is a great, versatile actor. Loved him especially in KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN. Nip/Tuck...hmmmm... Just watch this show periodically 'coz Julian McMahon is in it - he was such a Sexy Demon in CHARMED..!! But speaking of these shows return on FX - When will RESCUE ME be back..?? That Denis Leary, too, is such a good, versatile actor. Loved him in The Thomas Crown Affair, next to my 007 Fav Pierce Brosnan.

Sorry but Damages still looks to me like a glib, boring show engineered to garner press plaudits at the expense of actual ratings.
Rose Byrne is also dismal and grimaces her way through scenes without the slightest evidence of any acting going on. |

Thats basically what it is. During it's first season, Damages got so-so ratings but great critical acclaim. And if a series on FX gets atleast one of the two than the network is happy. They especially liked this show since it was renewed for two more seasons, so no matter how this season plays out, everyone will definitely see a third season next year. |

Thanks for the elaboration Dan. I guess now we know why USA is Number 1, TNT is Number 2 and FX languishes. FX gave us seven years of low ratings for The Shield on the assumption that a show that looked like a home video was "great". Critics should be ashamed in their complicity in bringing year after year of boring TV to the screen because they're afraid of antagonizing management if they say their emperor has no clothes. More generally, one is quite amazed that any company could be run to generate plaudits at the expense of actual results and its managers not be fired. |

Some of FX shows got pretty good ratings (Rescue Me, Nip/Tuck, Sunny) however they havent produced anything good in recent years. Critics will always give acclaim to certain shows and usually ones that don't get good ratings but what they think is clever writing and acting. USA has great shows and really good ratings but their shows havent been as acclaimed. But still i'm sure networks would be happy to have shows that get really high ratings rather than get awards. |

I wish I were as sure as you are that networks would rather get highly rated shows than pleasing the critics (and their doppelgangers in the press and the Hollywood cognoscenti). I have wondered for many years what purpose those "professional" critics serve given that they almost unerringly lavish praise on unwatchable shows and ignore what is quality if it has the bad taste of also pleasing the public. The mixture of elitism and lack of knowledge that pervades most reviews has always left me cold. Now that some critics like Brian Lowry and Ray Richmond are writing columns as well, I have been amazed at how bright those gentlemen are when they write their comments and how all that knowledge seems to vanish the moment they write reviews. It's like they know readers expect elitism in reviewers and are only too eager to please. |
