In a nice piece of sleight-of-hand stagecraft, a ceiling fan spins slowly, breaking the light that falls on Brick and Maggie’s bed. But we never see the fan, only the shadow of its paddles, circling constantly amid a family with many shadows of its own.

Maggie — called Maggie the Cat — is childless and in a wreck of a marriage to Big Daddy’s son, Brick. In the person of Anika Noni Rose (of the movie Dreamgirls, and a Tony winner for Caroline, or Change) she’s feline right down to the way she eyes anyone else on stage. Rose is a mile-a-minute Maggie, delivering her stories, complaints and threats like gunfire and primping endlessly, gorgeous in her anger.
