An epic farce

The writer of this article is just another critic sitting home somewhere in his PJ's critizing a very entertaining movie.
It's a great story line. It was exciting, with a great message at the end.

The sexual overtones and innuendo were disgusting.
The idea of great moral heroes is completely ridiculed along with the religion that transformed and saved Europe from destruction (sadly of course it turned its back on God eventually) Although I did enjoy the battle with the dragon it was a little to cartoonish.
We wonder why our kids grow up with the typical stereotypes of woman and sex when we feed them a steady diet of garbage.
This movie makes a mockery of an ancient and important piece of literature.

You have to see this movie, it's not good, far from it, but it's pretty awesome at times, you'll laugh and laugh and laugh

This film was nothing like the epic. I think that if the producers were to change the names of all of the characters, I would not have known what this movie was about. Beowulf is a braggart and Hrothgar is drunk and impotent. All of the characters lack integrity that the epic gives them. Somehow, Christianity became the bad guy in the end. I'm not sure how that happened; however, In the epic, Hrothgar's throne was holy and so was Beowulf's sword. This all escaped the producers and I would not reccomend this film to any one who actually cares about the epic. If one was to want much action and partial nudity... Hoorah for them.

There is plenty of excitement and opportunity for special effects in the authentic Beowulf story line. Too bad the producers saw fit to degrade and corrupt Beowulf instead of missing the opportunity to portray him, as he was in the epic poem, and authentic hero. This is especially sad in a time where all of us, young and old need heroes.

The special effects, were however, cool!

Truly a waste of good money to go see, this would be good for a Saturday Afternoon on HBO, but hardly worth the evening spent at the theatre.

Not hard to follow the story, just rather pointless to watch.

And such a horrible waste of Hopkins talent, while his co-stars strangle in their own mediocrity.

I really enjoyed the movie, and remembered reading the story back in highschool. It was a bit different, but none the less, I think it was fine. People complaining that there were too many suggestive scenes are being ridiculous. I think (besides some of the language use) that many people back then would act like that. They didn't have TV, or many of the things we have now to keep us busy. Whats wrong with being a little naughty? Oh well...I think the critic who reviewed this was a little over the top. The movie wasn't the best movie I ever saw, but it surely wasn't worth a C- maybe a B+ I would say. Watch it in 3-D by the way :D It's amazing!

I would imagine Michael Sragow as a frustrated man that has had his fair share of problems with woman. Michael: Its not the world's fault you cannot get laid. Beowulf was awesome!

Take a bunch of your drunk buddies to watch this farce. Then again you are probably better off spending the money on video games at Dave and Busters. The movie held no thrills just stupid, lack luster characters badly animated to a chilly point. In other words, the characters are just cold. We laughed out loud, but could not sit through the entire movie. It was just too boring. C- is a gift - it is more like a D. We should have seen it in 3D if at all. We all felt cheated.

What a movie! I can not remember such a fine cast and director involved with such a worthless peice of trash. I was stunned by the effort that went into this film and the poor results. I went to see "No country for old men" however, it was not out in our theaters, so we happened upon Beowulf. Michael Scragow's review was right on the money, this film is not even worth a DVD rental.

I was greatly let down by this film. I fail to understand why they felt the need to not use live filming. I was so distracted by the terrible movement of the characters that I can scarecely comment on the plot and writing of the story. The entire movie reminded me of a few video games I have under the TV. You know when the game has an short cartoon intro! Very sad and dissapointing, if this is what action film is going too I suppose I will finally fade to the past.

That's a terrible review that blithely ignores the metaphor posed by the film.

Michael, learn to read between the lines. You completely missed the deeper meaning in the film by taking issue with the technology.

I mean why even watch films at all? Why not just go see live plays all the time! I mean what are filmmakers thinking! Having 2 dimensional moving photographs on a screen takes away from the believability people being in the room right??

So what if CGI drove the spectacle??? 9 million people are addictly entertained by CGI in games like World of Warcraft that have far far worse acting and plot than Beowulf.

I enjoyed the film and left the theatre pondering the metaphoric element to the film that clearly went way over Michael's head. I'm disspointed such a bad review was even written, but c'est la vie.

It's so easy for critics to trash a few because, well, there's no investment on their part except for 2 hours of their time. And negativity sells. This reviewer seems to only focus on the bad. "Unrealistic eyes"? Maybe in Polar Express, but these eyes in Beowulf looked pretty real to me. I don't know the source material but as a movie, this one is damn impressive and entertaining and epic. The whole thing about the Austin Power is just regurgitation -- what do you expect from a PG-13 animation -- an animated hard on? And the point about Unferth? O lord, please complain to the original author. What do you prefer the character to be called? John?
This review is so self-indulgent that it reminds me of Ego in Ratatouille. Being a critic is an easy job. Seeing the meat through the bones is the hard part.

Anyone that has a techie bone in their body Is gonna love this. The animation was closer to real than anything I could have imagined as far as the characters went. The new 3d was truly awesome and I would recommend going to see this to anyone under 50... And if you failed to enjoy it I would suggest that maybe go watch it again and use the glasses they gave you and not the readers you use for your Sunday "Paper"... Michael Scragow needs todo the same..

this movie was a little disapointing. I've read the book and they skipped many things in it. They also messed up the storyline too.I didnt expect them to make it completely accurate but at least they could have made it more true.

I'll admit not a fantastic movie, but I enjoyed it. Animation was horrible at times, oh well. I liked how they portrayed Beowulf, he was a tough guy who performed these great feats, but at times he still just seems like a brute, not some perfect man. The way he acts makes me think a lot of the heros in Greek mythology. When he comes and says he's going to kill the monster, there is not a mob cheering him, it doesn't seem overly dramatic, rather somewhat realistic. And I myself enjoyed Angelina Jolie, I don't know why a hetero male would not. NOT a PG 13 movie though ^^

I thought it was fun. What's wrong with having some fun watching a movie. Whether we were supposed to laugh or not at least we're laughing.
