The face of pot politics: Why Don Haumant - and some legislator...

Full story: TwinCities.com

This text is replaced by the Flash movie. "Statistically, I'm supposed to be dead," says Don Haumant, 57, as he sits in his Minneapolis living room, the winter light coming in through half-closed shades.

It won't pass because the system wants to keep you buying medications so their rich friends get richer and contribute money to their camapigns.

Their is a method call vaporizing and that is done by heating the cannabis to 400 degrees F.'Smoking" it this way prevents the combustion of the plant, circumventing the ill effects caused from smoking.

I think the rule should be, "to each their own poison". Many of the police and judges, involved in drug cases are addicted to alcohol, and see nothing wrong with it. Now if you break the law ,by driving with it in your system, over a certain level ,you get sent to jail when caught. Receational acohol use is considered ok. These same upholders of the law are throwing folks in jail for using other drugs recreationally and in some cases medicinally. I am in my mid 70's and have had drugs available to me since I was a teanager, but I never chose to even try any. I had a narcotics Rx license for decades, so obtaining the hard stuff would not have been difficult. On the otherhand I have fought the over consumption of alcohol most of my life. As a conservative I have been a hard nose when it comes to drug abuse, but today I think the best approach is to license and tax drugs and fund educational and treatment programs with the tax proceeds. These users do not belong in jail.

I have a friend who recently went through cancer. Her anti-nausea medication was $16k per shot and the hospital charged $500 just to administer it.

I'm not even sure how I feel about this bill, but I tend to be a realist. If $20 worth of pot has the same (or superior) effect as a $16k shot, let them smoke the joint!

Pot is widely available right now even though it's illegal to posses, use, or sell. You'd think Big Brother should want in on that action. Of course, that doesn't mean there shouldn't still be rules around the use of it...like in public?? There are millions of people who use it and probably aren't about to stop. It's illegal (and usually stronger punishment) to cheat on your taxes and to speed on the highway, doesn't stop people though.

It's time to acknowledge that there are medical uses for this and legalize it.

People overdose and get severly addicted to pills. Marijuana is a much safer drug with less addictive properties and nobody has ever died from smoking to much of it.

Of course drug companies aren't all over this, the profit MARGIN isn't as good as mass manufacturing pills in foreign countries, then shipping them here, paying Dr.s to prescribe them, advertising them everywhere, and turning their drug name into a household word.(ask any 20 year old who the 4th president of the US was, they won't be able to tell you right away. Ask them what Prozac or Lortab is for, and they'll be able to tell you)

A taxable, earth grown pain remedy is just what we need. I don't see the state of MN jumping on the chance to tax all the pot people smoke now anyway. I've never heard of a pot head going crazy, beating his wife, and killing someone like drunks can do. I guess the bottom line is the stigma with pot, our fine poiticians prefer to get drunk, but would never "smoke that stuff", so I guess no one else can either. What a load of garbage, let people handle their pain and medical issues their way, if it works better than downing a pill cocktail everyday.

And as far as people getting it that don't really need it, look at our current prescription painkiller addiction plauge, it has it our great state too. Most people that take them don't even need them, go to urgent care and the first thing they try to do is give you a painkiller. I'd rather have people smoking pot when they shouldn't than taking pain pills. You can od on pain pills, not on pot.

Legalize it! Alcohol is truely the devil. Like I used to tell my children, who are now 22, 23 & 25-"I smoke there for you live" In the fiftys they had a little blue pill that was mothers little helper-in the eighties I had pot... All my children are out of the house and tending themselves financialy.

I saw a funny cartoon in a newspaper it shows a judge with gavel in hand telling a man "You served your country, raised a family, paid taxes and supported your community, for years while smoking marijuana. Thank god we finally got you!!!"

Medicinal Marijuana is much better than some of the medications out there that have severe side effects and cost the patient a fortune.
Pot would be a safer and less expensive alternative.

I see no reason medical marijuana should not be legal in this state. If it helps someone with their medical problems it should be used.

I have yet to see violent pot smoker unlike other drugs and alcohol users.

I say legalize it, regulate it and tax it.

Mr Goodbar=Idiot.

His post may be the dumbest I've ever seen on these forums.

"Why don't they prescribe tobacco cigarettes then?"

Gee, maybe it's because cigarette tobacco does nothing to alleviate pain or nausea. It also is a known health risk. And oh, despite all this, it's legal anyway! Yet these poor folks are forced to break the law to alleviate their suffering. I'm guessing Mr. Goodbar works for the government.

It is too bad Pawlenty would rather send people to jail for trying to be well. He has a perverted mindset that has hurt many people.

He must like to control people and hurt them is his only excuse.

The police have a conflict of interest in this situtation as it benefits them monetarily to keep it illegal. they get a log of money for chasing pot criminals and then taking their possessions.

the police are not to be trust. they are actually hired to lie and lie they do.

Dare is another failed program the police use. it has been deemed a failure by the USA fed government, but are polcie are not to bright.

Hello,
My significant other is a survivor of Hodgkin's. She was told a long time ago she had a couple weeks to live. She did the whole Make a Wish and in the end survived. This is great but unfortunately she has been left with some severe/chronic back pain from the after effects of chemotherapy.
The issue with this is the amount of pain medication she has to take on a daily basis. This is horrible on the poor gal's kidneys and liver.
The one thing that gives her relief that NONE of these drugs give her is Marijuana. This allows the bone pain to subside which in turn gives the muscles a break for overall relief.
It is absolutely asinine that our country views this substance as an illegal drug. It blows my mind. When was the last time we heard about a fella beating his wife after smoking marijuana? This typically happens after an 18 pack of beer doesn't it?
Cigarettes are more addictive than Heroin!!!! Yet we can buy them at age 18!!!
Pawlenty gets one less vote if he Veto's this..... he just doesn't understand.

It's a very good medicine for anorexia and nausea. It's too bad we have so many idiots out there unaware of how good they can be for people and with FAR LESSS SIDE EFFECTS.
We live in a country where every idiot get s a voice thanks to ACORN. The Framers wanted an INTELLIGENT democracy. They didn't want every idiot with half a brain marijuana will remain illegal and out country is going to hell.
