Forget It. Cher May Never Talk Grownup. Reality? It's Not In The Script.

ATLANTIC CITY, N. J.- Sooner or later she's got to cut it out. After all, she's 32 now, and without the hair and the makeup her rather irregular beauty is more irregular than beautiful.
Her 3-year-old son Elijah Blue Allman is strutting around the hotel room and her 10-year-old daughter Chastity Bono is down the hall.
Sooner or later, Cher will stop being 17, when the whole world is reduced to boys and clothes and girl-friends, and life's metaphysics waver between a whimper and a giggle.
Sooner or later, she will stop saying, in all seriousness, I just do what I do and that's the way I do it, "and "I've had this pair of boots for seven years and if I ever lost them it would just be the biggest tragedy in my life."
Sooner or later, Cher is going to start talking grownup.
Forget it. This, after all. is Cher, or as the little old ladies from Trenton were calling her in the casino downstairs, the Cher - television's tent-show queen, purveyor of the gilded, the gossamer and the glamorous. Cher of Sonny and Cher, Cher of Gregg Allman and Cher, Cher of the peekaboo breasts and bellybutton, and the glistening flesh shivering in silver spangles: Cher of the Time cover, and the It Girl of the 70s, Cher just going with the flow of the tide and the trends and on top of it all, really, ready to rollerskate the night away.
Reality? It's not in the script.
At home, Cher's world is the bright cocoon of Beverly Hills. There, she made Monday nights famous for a while by renting out a roller-skating rink so all the celebrities could come play with her.
"Famous people don't mind looking silly as long as they're with each other It's a big drag falling on your ass and stuff when other people are around asking you for your autograph and taking your picture" she says.
On the road, Cher's world is confined to the stage and to the dark red art deco walls of her seemingly endless suite in the Resorts International Hotel: the 11:30 p.m. performances before packed crowds, the mornings spent sleeping away the night before, the huge bouquets of slightly wilted flowers, the huge troupe of nurses and secretaries and assistants, the naked blonde friend Angela with the British accent standing in the door, the distant rumble of the Rolling Stones record coming from yet another part of the suite. And, of course, her son, Elijah Blue.
Elijah Blue, recently turned 3, is wearing his little scuffed tennis shoes and his little blue T-shirt and his little Pierre Cardin blue jeans and his little gold pierced earring. Elijah Blue is jumping off the ottoman over and over again, while his very Un-Cher-like nurse, fat and stout and blond, coos.
"They think Elijah, you're wonderful, Elijah B, they think you're wonderful." Actually Elijah is only the opening act in the everlasting exercise in the unimpeded fantasy that is Cher.
She comes into the room in iridescent purple jogging pants and black tank top and proceeds to pull on her purple leg warmers in preparation for racquetball with Angela the Blonde (who has progressed to a little white towel) at the Jewish Community Center.

(CONT.)Doubletake time - this skinny person with the short, scraggly hair and the washed-out eyes, this wan and worn person with the nasal voice is the same woman who for all these years has been spreading her life before us in the fan mags like oleomargarine on Wonder Bread.
She sighs. There have been so many interviews for so many years and it's really work to do them, she wants you to know that, even if there is just the tiniest admission that a Cher without publicity is like Cher without oxygen. "Well," she says reluctantly, "I guess it doesn't sound very believable of me if 1 said that I would really rather have my privacy, but you know, the whole publicity thing just kinda snowballed and then it got out of control. I mean there were the rotten days with Sonny and then it got worse with Gregory and pretty soon everyone who read about us is saying,'Listen, we don't care what you're doing, and we're not interested in hearing about it anymore.' But it wasn't like Gregory and I were running to the papers every day and saying,'Look, look, this is the next terrible thing that happened to us, but that's what people thought. And they got bored and when they get bored.forget it. I mean if they like you, then it doesn't matter if you screw up or if they get angry, but if you don't give them interesting stuff, forget it. Like I mean, I don't give a s- what kind of shampoo Farrah Fawcett-Majors is using. I mean, really."
And really, there isn't much in her life that everyone doesn't already know about:
Little Armenian-American Cher Sarkisian, who traded in her star-struck girlhood at 16 when she met Sonny. THEY BECAME FAMOUS. The fan mags clucked - was Cher too dependent on Sonny?(Could she make it on her own? What would happen when young love and bell bottoms went out of style?) No problem. It was Sonny and Cher and Chastity growing up on television while Mom put Dad down and not even a divorce got in the way of their making a mint out of it.
And then on to Allman and the magazines moaned - his drinking! His drugs! Poor Cher! What will happen? What happened of course was the marriage to Gregg three days after the divorce from Sonny, Cher's suit for divorce from Gregg nine days after that, the reunion, Gregg's suit for divorce from Cher, the reunion, the legal separation, and in the meantime, Elijah.
The album covers tell it all, from "Gregg Allman and Woman" with a serpentine Cher wrapped around him like a vine, to "Take Me Home," with disco Cher alone in her golden breastplates and horned helmet.
It's all there in her show. There are tapings of her mother's voice ("She always did want to be naked"). In between the female impersonators and the dancers dressed in ambisexual punk and the band and Cher's nine costume changes ("There's very little left of me to show you guys"), there are film clips and slides to take the audience through it all one more time. She even sings a song about Allman, "Pater and Fils," "that will give you guys the inside scoop on the whole thing."
Cher's life, after all, has always been her art and her act and if you don't care about her clothes and her men, then forget it. Really.

The phone rings politely in the background. Angela reappears, this time in racquetball attire. "Oh, Cher, it's Geney and he's in the Roanoke Airport and he needs you for just one minute to come talk to him."
"Geney" is Gene Simmons, a member of the rock extravaganza Kiss. He's on tour, too. Cher comes back smiling. Is she in love? "Oh, I don't know, I used to think I wasn't but now I don't know,"
Okay, well what about the show?
A bored pout. "Oh, it's okay, I didn't really want to do anything you know but they said I should, it's like I better do something alone quick or I never will. So I'm doing what my audience likes me to do. I mean I can't go on doing this forever, it would look really dumb for a 45-year-old woman to be out there doing what I do."
But no. Cher is not worried about getting older, she is not worried about what to do with herself when she could walk naked down Wilshire Boulevard and get nothing but arrested.

HOLLYWOOD - Cher, except for a pair of TV Specials, has been hiding out the past two years to give herself some breathing space and to reorganize her career.
Or as she says, "l cooled it."
That doesn't imply the tall, slender songbird was out of the news.
She split with her second husband. Gregg Allman, and went to court to change her name. Legally she is simply Cher, dropping her married names of Bono and Allman.
Like Lucy, Liberace, Raquel and Elvis, one handle is sufficient identity.
"1 never felt like a Bono or an Allman," Cher said the other day. "It really threw me to be identified as Cher Bono Allman. I'm just Cher. Nobody ever calls me anything else. That's the only name they put on the marquee when I make an appearance.
Also, I felt I was part of a permanent team, Sonny and Cher, long after Sonny and 1 broke up personally and professionally. So six months ago I made my legal name Cher. "It hasn't been without complications. Society seems to demand last names. Doctors and druggists don't understand it. There have been some legal hassles and when a cop gave me a ticket this week he insisted I should have two names. "I can put up with that. Besides one name looks neat on my credit cards
. "My children, Elija - he's 3 now - and Chastity - she's 10 - have kept their fathers' last names. I'm happy to say I'm on good terms with Sonny and Gregg. Sonny, in fact, has just bought a house within sight of the new one I'm building in Benedict Canyon."
Cher is returning from professional hibernation this summer with a two month personal appearance tour, her first as a single, in Las Vegas, Toronto, Atlanta , Washington, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
She is partly motivated by a desire to hype her new hit album, "Take Me Home," and to establish herself as a solo performer.
"I broke in my act last month in Reno," she said. "I was nervous as hell before I walked on stage. But once I started it was okay..
"It's a lot harder without Sonny at my side. I spent years developing a fixed personality on stage - flippant, fast-mouthed and bitchy. But I was using only part of my personality because it wasn't necessary to do more.
"Sonny would take over and I'd follow along. Now I can be myself and I find it's easier for me to relax out there. The act allows me to show every facet of myself with a monologue, singing and dancing.
"I include some old tapes from 'The Sonny and Cher Show' and film Sonny took of the children. It's fun for me and for the audience.
"I start out dressed as Laverne and let her warm up the audience for Cher. I change costumes until I'm blue in the face. Nine changes in all.
"My wardrobe was made by Bob Mackie who did all my outfits for the television series. They're really spectacular and cut in strange places so I can't wear underwear. Not that I do anyhow."
Cher was pleased with her reception in Renoto standing room crowds. She doubts she will ever need a partner again.
"If I did decide to work with a partner, I'd be crazy not to team up with Sonny," she said. "Nobody is better.
"Each of us anticipated what the other was going to do and say. Sonny would start extemporizing and go off on some crazy tangent. I'd pick up on it and go along with him and everything would turn out okay. I can't do that as a single. My whole act is thoroughly worked out.
"This fall, when the tour is over, I hope to make a movie at Universal, "The Enchanted Cottage.' I bought the property years ago. And I still owe NBC two specials and a TV movie.
"I'd rather not do specials because I'm pretty much typed. Movies really appeal to me but good properties are hard to find.
"Rather than go along with second rate projects I decided to cool it. I filled up the past two years with my kids, roller skating and recording the album.
"I can't say it was a good career move. If I knew the right moves for my career, I wouldn't have done a lot of things I did in the past.

"I sat out for two years because I wanted everything to die down. I stayed off the tube and away from personal appearances. It wasn't necessary for me to work. It got so publicity was becoming more important than what I was doing.
"It's funny how your public personality affects your private life. I have a reputation for being a talented, basically honest person who gets into trouble.
"I'm amazed at things I read about myself, parties I never attended, dates I never had. I just sit home and read the papers to keep up on what people imagine my life is like."

HOLLYWOOD - Cher sits in a restaurant booth, looking like a cross between a Tibetan high priestess and a gypsy fortuneteller,being stared at by a lot of men but doing little staring herself. She looks decidedly striking, and although she is clearly trying hard not to look like Cher, only those who have spent the past 15 years in sealed caves trying for some new kind of Guinness record would fail to recognize her instantly. Since all the men in the place seem to be looking at her, it is only right and proper that she should be talking about men.
But what she is saying comes as something of a surprise. "Most nights," she says, "1 go home alone. Everyone assumes I must be asked out a lot, but I'm not. That's my fault. I'm very selective. Sue Mengers, the agent, tried to fix me up with someone the other day.'You'll love him,' she said.'He's a big studio executive. Terribly attractive.' Well, I couldn't stand him. He kept on calling afterwards and
sending me things, but I thought he was abysmal.
"But it isn't easy meeting people here, is it? I got together with Sonny (Bono) only because I was trying to fix him up with my girl-friend but she couldn't dance so I wound up dancing with him. Gregory (Gregg Allman, ex-husband No. 2) I met just because I went to the Troubadour one night and he happened to be playing. And Gene (Simmons of Kiss) I got together because at a party someone asked me if I'd like to meet Gene Simmons and I said,'I'd love to. I've seen all of her movies.'
"I'm shy when it comes to going out. I keep thinking,'Oh, God, he's going to try to kiss me and if he does I'll puke. "That first time I met Gene he wanted me to go back to his place but I said,'No, come to mine." We sat up till 6:30 a.m. talking and he was amazed that I didn't ask him to take me to bed. I said,'You'll turn old and grey before I ask you to.' "My first date with Gregg was a total bust. Next day he called and said,'I've never had such a horrible time with any girl. Nobody has treated me like that.''Yes,' I said,'it was awful, wasn't it?' He said,'Shall we try again?' In the end, I said yes and then my sister gave me pointers on how to behave.'Let them do the talking,' she said.
"I was with Sonny for 11 years, and Gregory for three. That proves I'm a glutton for punishment. But it's easier to do my work when I'm not involved with a man. My daughter Chastity (11) advised me the other day not to marry again. "If the man in your life likes your children, it's wonderful. If he doesn't, it's disaster. Chastity hated David (Geffen, a former Cher boy-friend) and I found out later he didn't think much of her either. Gregory she loved.
"Chastity's a wonderful girl, but her brother Elijah Blue (by Gregg Allman) is a real little devil. He goes to a Hebrew school. The other day when I went to pick him up they said:'Please, madam, don't put ham in Elijah's lunch box any more; it's driving the rabbi crazy.'
"Elijah thinks he's the biggest thing that's ever happened on the planet. He's three and already he's picking up girls in the street. They like it, too."
