Little Italy in the Bronx is rich in history and tradition. I lived in the Bronx, on Bathgate Avenue and E. 187th Street for 26 years, and I have the best memories of my time there. If you can't find it on Arthur Avenue, then it doesn't exist. I live in Williamsburg Brooklyn now, and I hate it. It's like living in the village. No one knows who there neighbor is, and there is a constant change of residency. In Little Italy, you knew who lied in your building or home, you knew your neighbors, and Belmont was voted the safest neighborhood in the US in 1986 because of this. Crime is negligible compared to other areas of NYC. What has caused the change in Belmont is the lack of private homes where families could live. It's not easy living in a 5th floor walk up apartment. I visit the area weekly to see family and friends, and the "old timers" never forget those who lived there. You have to see Belmont - the REAL Little Italy with your own eyes, and feel the warmth of those who live and work there!!!!!!!!!

Agreed, Capt. Lou! Belmont has a small-town feeling, where the neighborhood regulars all know each other and make you feel welcome. I love visiting there! I didn't grow up there, but it has the same feeling as the neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens that I remember from my childhood, and which are now gone. |

Wow, I am always amazed at some of the perceptions of many places of the Bronx that are still lingering out there. I recently launched a website (www.thebronxrocks.com ) because I was so frustrated by my family and friends' perception that they would be mugged, murdered or eaten alive by boogeymen once they crossed the "border" from Manhattan. I have lived in the Bronx for two years, and have been all over (many times walking around alone for hours taking pictures - I'm female, btw). The Bronx has been making a huge comeback for the last 10 years or so. Come up and visit and see for yourself!
And P.S.- I love the Bronx' Little Italy (check out a couple of my restaurant reviews - "Mama Mia") Simone Davis www.thebronxrocks.com |

Great website, Simone! I love exploring neighborhoods in all the boroughs, so I'll be checking back with you. And you're right about exploring - as in Manhattan or anyplace else, you have to be careful, but I've never been bothered by anyone on my treks. On the contrary, people are more likely to reach out to you and they appreciate your interest in their neighborhood. |

Thanks Still Wondering! And how right you are about how quite often your attitude will determine the way you are perceived and treated - this is especially true in the Bronx, I've found.
Keep checking back - and feel free to email me questions or tips on interesting things happening in the Bronx. And keep on trekkin'! Simone www.thebronxrocks.com |

Arthur Ave was the best place years ago as was many parts of the Bronx until all the animals moved in and ruined it like they ruined every other city in the country

When was the last time you were there? Your bigotry is clouding your vision. |

Its safer in the day than at night.Arthur Ave. between 187th and 183rd. Whats keeping the area a little safer is the housing for Fordham U's students.

I have a home here in Morris Park (Pelham area) and the neighborhood is wonderful ! Moved here four years ago and have never second guessed my decision. Quiet clean and safe and the property values are still quiet strong despite the real estate crisis.

1 What you think about this area? I came back again this summer in July. I like the Bronx, but in the same time I feel not safe in the street, specially late night, people look-me strange, like I'm crazy to walk around this areas. Is really dangerous or is only my sensation? ++++++++++ The sensation you are feeling is probably that bottle that was thrown at you, which bounced off your head! |

It ain't like it use to be. The whole bronx has
has gone in the toilet. I have great memories of the old days but it's over. Forget about it. Move on and get a life. The past is the past. "I'll take Manhatten the Bronx and Staten Island too....." |
