yeah, hard to believe tomorrow it will be 50 years that we lost the first rock and roll musicians to lose their lives tragically. Of course later on Jim Croce, Lynyrd Skynyrd, John Denver and others would follow but when you look at the short careers of Buddy Holly (Charles Hardin) The Big Bopper (aka Jiles P Richardson) & Ritchie Valens (nee Ritchie Valenzuela) the music world lost fine musicians & people whose music will always live on. Whether you heard That'll Be the DAy, Chantilly Lace, Donna or La Bamba, you know they'll always be there in our hearts. Don McLean said it best in that 1972 epic American Pie:The day the Music Died. But Rock N Roll is here to stay as the late Danny Rapp from Danny & the Juniors once sang. Rock On & rest in peace Buddy, JP & Ritchie

Judged: 1 1 1 The very name "Crickets" were the inspiration for a band called "Beatles." He invented the format of a simple quitar, base and drum Rock n Roll band that has been the model for bands to this very day. His honest, heartfelt and catchy songs are re-made and replayed today. Though Elvis would be known for being King of Rock n Roll, Holly - who wrote his own music - was the engine that gave us on of our national sounds. He was a founding father...plain and simple. |

Yeah, but we still have Springsteen(haha)...oh, never mind, you are right! |

Ironically Buddy was on a "comeback" during this time. Minus the Crickets his solo efforts were not selling. He was using up considerable studio time and was pushed to go the Winter Dance Tour to promote his songs. Remember, for all he accomplished it wasn't like he was a 10 year vet in the biz and could say no. It was more like 2 years. The manager of the tour should have had his head examined putting them out there in the worst conditions imaginable. As for the future of Valens, he was only 17 and a teen idol who was a bigger star at the time. Buddy was not THE main headliner on the tour believe it or not. The Big Bopper was a DJ who struck gold a la Rick Dees w/Disco Duck("Hello Baaaaaaby!"). It's hard to say about the longterm plans of each but Holly certainly would have leaned towards producing and becoming an empressario in the business.

Wish they would of had him at Super Bowl halftime instead of mush-mouth Springsteen.

Well said, Todd. And I'm a musician and when we do 'Rock and Roll Is Here to Stay' to me it's as much of a statement to Buddy Holly as 'American Pie' but both are significant to American music for sure. |

Yes, he was probably very talented, sang well, and wrote some songs. I don't know.
But honestly, can anybody under 35 name one of his songs? |
|

unfortunately , Holley + Richardson + Valens did NOT "die instantly" ... They were thrown from the Plane and died in the Snow from Hypothermia (Source of Info = Coroner's Report + Original Police Report)

Nope, I have no Springsteen CD's or vinyl. Don't care for Def Lepard, AC/DC or the Scorpions either, but they're rock legends. |

Buddy Holly turned out a beautiful guitar piece called "Words of Love"
it was later mastered by the Beatles in an excellent piece of guitar Harmony. If only Buddy, Bopper and Richie took the bus we would have a world of more beautiful music than that of today. They don't make music today like the music of the 50's long live the Do Wops! Even Billy Joel put out a tribute to the Do Wops in his past albums. |
