As a young person I cringed when I heard people applaud at the end of a rousing first movement. Somewhere during my next thirty years I changed my position. Now I am disappointed if there is no applause at the end of Tschaikovsky Violin Concerto or the Grieg Piano Concerto. I also like it before the final movement of the Pathetic. I heard a story that Eric Leinsdorf once had his orchestra (either Cleveland or Boston) stand at the end of that movement. Pretty funny stuff.
