Bob Hope was appearing at the London hippodrome in a charity show for the 'world wild life fund'. He would first be presented to the Queen at Buckingham Palace.
I was driving Glen Campbell at the time and he also was appearing and would be presented to the Queen.
Since Bob Hope was the last person to be presented, the road between Buckingham Palace and the hippodrome would be closed to traffic for her majesty’s cortege. I was asked to drive both Glen Campbell and Bob Hope in a new red Jaguar escorted by a police outrider. I had no problem with this. I waited at the bottom of the steps for Bob Hope to join us in the Jaguar and sped off towards the hippodrome reaching 90 miles per hour along Piccadilly.
When I discharged my passengers at the stage door Bob Hope gave me a 100 dollar note which at first glance I thought was ten dollars. Imagine my delight when I was later able to look closely at the note.
After his performance on stage Bob Hope stumbled in the dark, after being blinded by the foot lights, along what should have been a nice flat surface. However, the hippodrome was not built to accommodate all the paraphernalia required for a live television broadcast and there were cables lying everywhere. As he stumbled just before a six-foot drop I caught him. He stood upright, looked me straight in the eye and said "you earned that hundred dollars".
