you people who dont like to give tax breaks for film, tv shows, etc. are not to bright. These movies, shows etc. only help promote these islands and give 1000s of local work, so they dont have to move to LA. Do you know how much the tourism board in the state spends to attract tourists??? Stop being so narrow mined and understand that Hawaii has a chance to build its state to a top notch location for filming, and help 1000s have careers outside of the travel industry. And NO they are not going to come here with NO tax breaks, there is so much competion from all the states for getting these movies and shows that Hawaii has to have these tax breaks to get the projects.

$200,000,000 for Hawaii folks. So what if they get back 4-20%. Lots of people get some great jobs, Hawaii benefits by the $200,000,000. Pretty much a win-win to me.

"The return of a small portion of the budget due to that rebate is making the state far more attractive and ... in some regard is increasing the production budget so that more money is being spent" in Hawai'i, Hankins said. Because of the tax credits, "We're back on the radar because we're competitive and hopefully that will continue to raise the (TV) commercial expenditures in the state."

While small in scale and duration, TV commercials help fill in the downtime between production projects.

"Every little bit helps," said Lisa Lee Mitchell, co-owner of Eclectic Concepts in Honolulu, which provides production coordinating and food catering services.

TV commercials "spend a decent amount of money here," she said. "It's good when work is here."

It is good, clean, non-polluting work. I am all for more of it. Where do I sign up!

hawaii would be even more attractive to many industries if the state would only eliminate all confiscatory taxes....for everyone and all businesses in hawaii....legalize gambling, prostitution, drugs(the use, and distribution)curve government spending.....

Of course its a top notch location, but if you knew anything about production, there are LOTS of top notch locations around the world and they ALL have tax incentives to attrack productions.. If you want to expand the oppurtunitys for our youth,(besides working for a HOTEL or tourist business) we should keep building on this success and have more oppurtunitys for this state and its people.

They are just trying to diversify the economy.

As long as they follow the rule the locals are supposed to: pick up after yourselves and leave the land in the condition you found it.

THANK YOU!!! Yes, Hawaii is a top notch location! And in order to keep it a top notch location for the industry, we have no choice but to be competitive! If you haven't noticed, the majority of the projects filmed here do not need Hawaii or it's landscape to get the job done! WE need the productions, not the other way around. And NO-you do not want them to go elsewhere! That's money lost for our state-no matter what the tax break is, and one less project that our beautiful state can take pride in saying was filmed here!

If you look at the list of productions filmed here or going to be filmed here, not even 1/4 of those projects are promoting Hawaii. If you watch Lost, or Indiana Jones, or even go as far back as Jurassic Park, NONE of those story lines say anything about Hawaii! HELLO!? They can go anywhere with a plush green landscape and mountains and water and film there. So I think that our state should be proud that we can even be competitive in the industry and give our local workers and businesses jobs and money.

I agree with you. A clean business. They come, they go, they spend their money in the hundreds of millions. They get a little back....big deal. Any of the posts here that have a mortgage on their home have a tax writeoff too...subsidised by state and federal government. What's the problem with that?

BEING IN THE BUSINESS I DISAGREE WITH YOU.

FIRST TALENT CAN DRIVE THE PRODUCTION AND THE LOCATION. EXAMPLE, ADAM SANDLER LOVES HAWAII! HE WILL SHOOT IN HAWAII AT ANY EXPENSE.

WHAT BOTHERS ME AND MOST FOLKS WHO ARE NOT IN THE BUSINESS IS THAT IF THEY UNDERSTOOD THE 15 PERCENT OVER RIDE FOR THE PRODUCERS ON TOP OF THEIR SALARIES. SO YOU ARE GIVING THEM MONEY ON MONEY THAT WAS NEVER SPENT IN HAWAII.

THE COMPANY I WORK FOR WOULD NEVER TAKE ANY OF THE TAX BREAKS UNLESS IT WAS FOR REAL EXPENDITURES...AND MONIES SPENT IN HAWAII. WHAT I AM SAYING IS THAT THEY ARE GIVING CREDITS AND REBATES ON THE ENTIRE BUDGET...NOT ALL JOBS ARE IN HAWAII. I WORK HERE IN LA AND SHOULD ,MY SALARY EVEN THOUGH I DO WORK FOR SHOWS IN HAWAII...SHOULD THEY GET THE REBATE?

HELL NO!

THE BIGGEST OFFENDER OF THIS CREDIT WAS BRIAN GRAZER. BLUE CRUSH FOLKS.

THEY ARE SO RICH...AND THEY NEED MORE OF HAWAII MONEY, PLEASE!

ALSO, AFTE 9/11 MANY OF THE TALENT POOL WILL NOT WORK OVERSEAS THAT HAVE LOCATIONS THAT LOOK LIKE US. BELIEVE ME, THE TALENT (STARS) LOVE HAWAII.

TRUST ME ON THIS ONE.

THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY IS HOSING THE CITIZENS IN HAWAI.

IT IS SNOT A CLEAN BUSINESS. WHEN THEY WERE FILMING TEARS OF THE SUN WITH BRUCE WILLIS, THEY BLEW UP A BEAUTIFUL OHIA TREE NEAR OLOMANA WHERE THEY WERE SHOOTING.

I CRIED. WHY DID THEY HAVE TO BLOW UP A NATURAL RESCOURCE.

AND THE LOCAL CREW GETS PAID WAY LESS THEN THOSE OF US IN LA.

Yes...but the local crew workers that don't have the balls or desire to move to LA need to get paid...even if it is way less than what you get in LA. Sad, but most of our local workers know no other trade...so whatever they get out here they are thankful for.

As far as that beautiful tree goes...yes it's sad. But that doesn't mean that we shouldn't give a tax break to gain more money here in Hawaii from the business. We can save all the trees we want-but the money we make is what pays our bills and the PEOPLE getting paid are the ones who suffer without the business. The tree situation should be a whole new issue as far as rules and regulations go when it comes to what the production does to film their projects here. Not the taxes...

THAT IS BECAUSE THE IATSE...LOCAL 665 WILL NEVER ALLOW OUR OWN TO TEACH OUR OWN.

WHEN I COME HOME, TO RETIRE IN FIVE YEARS, I AM GOING TO TEACH OUR KIDS TO STAND UP AND GET THEIR FAIR SHARE.

YOU KNOW, THE HAWAIIAN CRAB STORY.

I LOVE MY CREW BACK HOME AND I MISS THEM.

BUT THE LA PRODUCERS TREAT THE LOCALS LIKE S%@#

The film industry in Hawaii is a great, clean industry; too bad for that Ohia tree. But I think you are talking about Wailua rather than Olomana (Kailua). No explosions allowed near those residential areas. The film industry does need the tax credits because at the end of the day, it's about business, and the spender (Studios) will go where they can get the best deal. Wouldn't you?

They do put more money into the State via pay checks to film crews, rentals, hotel rooms, food, water, plants (Nurseries) and other costs related to spending here in Hawaii. They also allow the film crew to pay their mortgages, rent, tuition for the kids, clothes, beer, poke and what have you. The mainland crew also spends on dining out, gifts, clothes, beer and poke. well, sometimes poke.

I do agree that we should get tax breaks also as natives to this islands, but it seems that until we can pull our boys back home from a war that spends billions in helping another nation that can make more revenue then our nation, I don't think we'll be getting it soon. So we should just enjoy the few productions we do get here every year. The film industry will always be feast or famine type work.

Lastly, as the productions come to Hawaii because of tax incentives or the locations, I think that the availability and skill or our film crews should be looked at. I remember a Union leader of the aformentioned IATSE local 665, which represents the film crews, he was a young local guy named Scott Wong, he was very approachable for a union leader and actually let me sign up to be eligible to work on the productions that were coming into town. He was holding training programs which was taught by his local members and he had technicians from the mainland teaching FX makeup and Script supervising classes. I met him while I was working on a reality show on the Big island and he fought for the local workers to get decent wages and living conditions in the film industry for Hawaii. He told me that the industry can be booming if they didn't have the A'ama crab syndrome like you mentioned earlier. It seems that the new guy there doesn't allow others to get a chance to work in this industry and that the rates have even gone down more eventhough the studios are spending 200,000,000. I think you are right about Dawson and working for the producers, the commissioners talked bad about the unions when they brought my show on the big island under a contract with the union. They didn't like Scott Wong getting the contract. But I got to get a nice room at the Prince Hotel where the producers were staying, a bump up in my pay, medical and a break for lunch that laste 30 minutes.

Let's working on the film crew and their wants if these productions are going to get credits for millions of dollars. And open it up for others to be able to apply for the jobs.

Lurker, I agree with you, I think that we see this tax credits and the film industry and we don't have a vested interest in it so we dismiss it as bad. I think it's great but I don't know how to get involved in this industry either. I see them filming all over and would like to get in and reap some tax benefit rewards.

I am a painter and a carpenter, they must have need for these kinds of trades. Can the Scott Wong help me. I heard about this guy to and saw him speak at alot of seminars about promoting the film industry with the support of labor Unions. Can he get me in. Or is there a new guy. IS this the same Scott Wong who is a Realtor now? Please post.

FIRSST YOU GOT TO GET IN THE UNION. IT IS HARD TO GET INTO THAT UNION.
SCOTT WORNG IS A GREAT GUY AND IS NO LONGER OUR BUSINESS AGENT FOR IATSE 665.
THE LAST THAT I HEARD ABOUT SCOTT WHEN HE WAS VOTED OUT WAS THAT HE WAS IN GREENS AND SET PRODUCTION.
BUT I LOVE SCOTTY WONG!
