A big surprise on gas

Barack Obama thinks the government should intervene on gas prices to "give families some relief," and last week called for releasing 70 million barrels of crude from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

With the olympics in full swing, here's some statistical gymnastics that's sure to ease the minds of most Americans. And you're absolutely right. We don't believe a word of it! From your expert gas cost analysis (what a piece of work that is), to your "affordability index". Truth is: your ratio of the average person's disposable income to the price of gasoline is an obviously flawed manipulation of statistical figures. But hey, if it sells books and makes you feel better, go for it.

And the study doesn't take into consideration the economic reality of todays world. We don't live like we did over 40 years ago. But it still costs 10x more than 40 years ago.

Obama shows what a phony know nothing he is every time he speaks. he'll say anything to make people happy. The strategic reserve is there, for when "our friends" cut off our oil, like they did in the 70s. Not to lower the price a few pennies.

"After studying the average yearly price of gasoline from 1949 to 2007, and assigning the number "1" to the ratio in 1960, we found today's prices comparable to what they were in 1960 (1.35 today to 1.00 in 1960, with a high of 3.32 in 1998). "

How about evalutating the fuel cost on a realistic scale.

In 1960 gas was $.31 cents per gallon and minimum wage was $1.00. This means a person could purchase 3.23 gallons of gas in 1960.

Today, gas is $3.99 per gallon, and minimum wage is $7.25. This means a person today can by 1.82 gallons of gas by working one hour.

This means gas has just about doubled. Considering everything else has increased astronomically, one does not even have 1.82 ration.

I call bs on this one.

Ron got it right, as long as it is priced under
$19.95 you can sell anything. Gas at $4.99
piece of cake, no problem. Profits are there to be made. Screw You.

A major factor not taken into account is the length of average commute to work in 1960 vs. 2008. Gone up a little don't ya think?

You mean like Chavez did in Venezuela? Like Castro did in the late 50's? Just have the government sieze anything profitable. Here's to hoping the greatest amount of influence you have in your professional life is deciding how many slices of lettuce to put on subs.

He proposes this and then the entire dem party takes to the airwaves to say that republicans wanting to drill is just a "stunt" that won't help.

Heaven help this nation if they buy what the dems are selling.

If the government would just give everyone free gasoline cards, this whole issue would be solved.

Yes, and McCain has pushed for a worthless gas-tax holiday because "we need it, we need it very badly."

Agreed, but offshore drilling won't help for 10 years or so either. Neither candidate has an answer that is workable right now.
