Taking a trip through The Big Valley offers a nostalgic kick. This ABC Western ran from 1965 to 1969 and never approached the popularity of NBC's Bonanza, the saga of the Cartwright family.

The BV was how many of us learned that the pivotal mother figure- Victoria Barkley- fair, intelligent, loyal, honorable, understanding, civic minded, honest, courageous,just, yet real, with a sense of humor and an "embrace life" view- was, in an earlier life, a major movie star. An actress, who, in actuality, overcame diversity and who was fair, honest, intelligent, diverse and a straight shooter. In my youth I would never have guessed.
