He's obviously not campaigning to the Germans to vote for him...he's campaigning on a global scale to us in the US. He's showing that foreign policy, and more specifically, repairing our image worldwide, will be one of the pillars of his presidency, should we vote for him. He also wanted to show his critics that he can be presidential and will represent us well in the world.
We all need to think bigger, as he said in his speech. We can't isolate ourselves these days, there's way too much at stake --terrorism, global warming, declining middle class, etc....
