Scooter-riders can make an arresting arrival

Scooter sales are soaring -- and no wonder. While automobiles guzzle gas, scooters sip it.

Like everything in the stupid green movement it involves a drastic change in lifestyle.

Which is yet another example of why conservation does not work as an energy policy.

Drill here, drill now!

Its good to see that rich white people are doing their part to help the environment. Just because you can afford rediculas gas prices doesn't mean that everyone can. You should take a step back and realize this problem is way bigger than you or me.

What a cute little slogan. Too bad it sounds so stupid.

You can evade reality, but you can't evade the consequences of evading reality.

Somehow some 50% of the Netherlands bikes or walks to work, and their weather isn't any nicer than ours.

Hey Chris, do you live in Winter Park and work downtown or perhaps Lake Mary?
Try walking that everyday, or better yet take the Bus.
Let me know how that works out for you.

I for one will be buying a scooter when I get the cash. The inconvenience of helmet hair, a little perspiration, and rain won't stop me. It's totally worth saving all that money in gas!

Nope I live in College Park and work on Lee Road. Takes me 10 minutes in a car or 15 on my bike.

If you lived in WP and worked DT that commuter rail train would work out well for you. Too bad it's dead.

If you spent half as much time trying to change your life as you do whining, you would be a lot better off.

I purchased a scooter about a month ago. It gets 115 mpg and saves me 14 gallons of gas PER WEEK ( commuting to work, yoga class, running group and simple errands ).

I didn't need to go out and purchase additional clothing ( except a helmet ), and it is not a big deal to brush my hair when I get to work. Also, I haven't found the heat or sweating to be a problem.

As for afternoon thundershowers, I have gotten wet once.

I highly value my life. Apparently you don't, it seems like you spend a great deal of your life on these message boards looking for something negative to say. How sad and BORING !

I suppose I need a team of scooters lashed together with duct tape and the rear pair will require a hitch. Maybe I can get some old chariot design prints and devise myself a platform to lead this team of Vespas 900 plus miles a week. Talk about small thinking, like everyone is just a working commuter driving back and forth to the job.

Somehow I think my survival regardless of fitness would be in danger. No thanks.

I think people would be more apt to change if there was any hard evidence that we could do anything about our natural climate change. Survival of the fittest could certainly be applied to the motorcycle/scooter and the cager/car

I know this article was meant to be light and cute, but I'm much more concerned with the new scooter riders being aware of how to ride those things than what they look like while doing so. These things aren't bicycles. You will be driving IN traffic, not next to it. I ride a motorcycle and I cringe when I hear of people hopping on these things without any training.

Agreed, all the gear all the time should be a familiar phrase before anyone hops on a bike or a scooter.

While traveling on John Young Parkway I followed a young woman on a scooter. I noticed the black helmet (her only safety feature, the cute white outfit (maybe a skort, maybe a dress, maybe a skirt & blouse). But what amazed me was her shoes. White, 3 inch heels. My only thought beyond her safety was if the shoes were very expensive and if they would break anytime soon.

For years I have cringed as young guys on "crotch rockets" have zipped and dodged between cars on I-4. I wonder what type of training they had ?

I rode a motorcycle for many years, quit riding and then bought a scooter back in March to combat demand on oil ( I can afford gas--but choose to cut my consumption to help lower demand and hopefully drive prices down ).

I have spoken to numerous "scooter commuters" out there and we are definately a different breed from those kids on crotch rockets. Many of us have had close calls with idiots on cellphones.

Does anyone know if you can drive a NEV on regular streets.I know some of them go 35mph which might work out for in town driving.
