For Newington Trio, One Starry Night

The bespectacled boy walked over to the hip-hop dancers from Connecticut suburbia, grasping a folded-up piece of paper and a pen. Full Story

Congratulations to Mike, Michael, and Ron known as E3 for a job well done. You have proven the adage that hard work and perseverance pays off! You have made your families, friends, and all of Newington proud. As the song New York, New York says,“If I can make it there I'll make it anywhere.” The Apollo audiences are some of the toughest anywhere and you three MADE IT THERE!!!!

I was at the Apollo on "that starry night" when E3 performed. They were awesome to watch and we WILL see them again and again, I can definitely picture them ringing in the New Year on Times Square!!!! Thanks for a great article!

Congratulation! Good job at persuing what you love while also finishing your education. You should be proud of yourselves as should your parents - they've raised you well.

Congratulations to Mike, Michael and Ron.(Two of you have great names, I must say!) It's nice to see hard work pay off, and it's always nice to see news of nice things in the Courant.

The thing that puzzles me, however, is why the Courant continues to offer so much space to three young men (two of them white) from a suburban town. They are nice (I have met them several times along the years), and they are handsome (or so I'm told by female acquaintances), but they are first and foremost, suburban boys practicing an art form that is decidedly urban. If nothing else, based upon race alone, offering them so much exposure does not fit into the Courant's editorial style at all.

Why are the accomplishments of these boys so fascinating to the Courant? Why does the Courant continue to offer so much space to this group in particular while ignoring other similar groups located in more urban settings? Is it some subtle reverse descrimination? Is it something else?

Now THAT is awesome reporting! How great that these young men, bound since middle school, have never once let their drive and determination waiver. What a shining example they are! Good luck to them, although I'm sure they won't need it!

Check out their performance:

I am certain that if you were to point the Courant in the direction of three pigmently enhanced young men from hartford who, not only have been working on their skills together since childhood, but are actively enrolled in college, they will gladly welcome the opportunity to report the story. I for one, would welcome that as front page news rather than learning that Hartford has had it's first homicide in 2009 within hours of the new year beginning.

It's unfortunate that some have to take such a cynical view of everything. I suspect your cup is almost always "half empty".

What's really puzzling is the comment - "they are first and foremost, suburban boys practicing an art form that is decidedly urban." Thank God such thinking did not hold back the greatest golfer on the planet, Tiger Woods.

Congrats to E3. Surviving the rigours of the Apollo Amateur Night competition and coming out on top is most definitely newsworthy; regardless of where you live or what your heritage is.

Those who know anything about the Apollo and its audience are aware they are notorious for being hard "to kid". The fact that E3 won them over is a testament to how well-deserved their triumph is.
