What are the lyrics to the song "You Never Looked Better", which Angela sang in Prettybelle? If someone could post the lyrics, it would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Prettybelle: "It was the hottest July 4th in the memory of man, and there I was helping to put my mate of back 20 somethin' years back in the red clay earth from whence he came"
Male chorus: Poor Leroy gone to Heaven, Poor Leroy's dead, Poor Leroy, lays so peaceful in his coffin bed. Prettybelle: Leroy, may I tell you Even though I cried, Part of me was bursting, With sheer pride! I think you'll believe me, Coming from your wife, Darlin' you just never looked better in your life! You made me proud! Today you made me proud, Leroy! Take if from your wife, You never looked better in your life! Seeing you all dressed up, lyin' in repose, I recall the last time we went buyin' clothes, You said,'Just a jacket' But how can you dispute, There's always an occasion for a blue shirt suit! You made me proud! Today you made me proud, Leroy! Take if from your wife, You never looked better in your life! You made me proud! Today you made me proud, Leroy! Take if from your wife, You never looked better, Even though folks put you together, You never, never looked better in your life! |

Thank you for the lyrics! I read that this song was cut in the Broadway show. Oh well. I happen to like it!

Well, it never made it to Broadway. It died in Boston. It opened in Boston at the Shubert in February 1971, but lasted only weeks. Angela herself said she would boycott a Broadway move unless it was fixed in Boston. The songs are incredible, but the story just didn't cut it: a an alcoholic and schizophrenic woman who allows herself to be raped by minorities in order to make up for the sins of her dead bigot sherrif husband. It's not exactly light musical theatre and the songs just don't quite cut the story. Individually, the songs are brilliant. In 1982, most of the original cast made the recording. It's incredible and I encourage you to give it a listen. Angela sounds BRILLIANT in it - she breaks your heart in "I'm in a Tree" and "When I'm Drunk I'm Beautiful" is one of the best 11:00 numbers ever written and performed. It's just overall an unfortunate mess.

It was most exciting in Boston Theater in those days. I saw Prettybelle and still have the playbill somewhere. The opening of FOLLIES, it's first preview was a matinee and I followed in the Colonial Theater Lobby following Angela and the Male Guitar Player Actor who sang the title song.I'm Surfing A. L tonight and wound up here and it's so joyous to read your blog and recall the pre-broadway experiences of those days in discovering theater at age 13...now did anyone see "MR. PRESIDENT??
