If anyone here actually remembers the movie, They cut straight from the opera house fire to what looks to be about 50 yrs later. Even watching the movie, I couldn't help but be creeped out by the knowledge that Christine is in her early 20's and the phantom, like Mdm. Giry is 40's to 50's, and she's swooning over this guy, even after finding out what and who he is. Why couldn't the sequel stick to that? Moving it to manhatten just reminds me of a movie yrs ago with Robert England (aka Freddie Kruger) as the phantom in modern day NY. Check that out sometime, wont ya.

i've heard terrible things about the sequel but do you know what i say? YAY i love phantom of the opera and am very much looking forward to seeing the sequel. if the movie sucks it sucks if its good i'll love it it's not like it would be the end of the world if the movie turned out to be rubbish
People always go on 'bladibla, sequels are crap...' well FIRSTLY you shouldn't say that until you actually see the finished product, sometimes the sequel is better than the original, and in many cases just as good. Also, it's only when they've made a certain number of sequels that it gets boring, because they run out of ideas. But Phantom Of The Opera is an open-ended story and could carry on for a long time, there are lots of potential ideas.

I've read the Forsythe sequel. It's a terribly written book but the plot itself is perfect for the musical sequel. As long has Forsythe's not writing the book for the musical, there is a lot to look forward to.

There are plenty of scenes in the book that would lend them to stage spectacle like the chase in the house of mirrors, the southern plantation opera and the entire look of Coney Island.

I'm not worried about the music as I sure it will be great (as long as he doesn't repeat too much of the music from the original musical).

I'm not sure what people are upset that doing a sequel is ruining Laroux's work; the original musical was very different than the novel.

LLoyd Webber is taking a BIG risk here. If the sequel flops it could jepordise the phenominal popularity of the original Phantom of the Opera, but if it is a sucess he will go down in history as the first ever mega hit composer to write sucesful sequel to his orginal masterpiece. In my own opinno I think knowing Lloyd Webber's stuff the songs will probably be good, and with the help of the right people the storyline will be just right, with a bit of blessings/luck I believe it could enjoy a sucessful run but I don't think anything can compare to the original Phantom of the Opera. The musical itself had and still has a timeless quality about it that draws audeiences in night after night. Its beautful, passionate with n amazing score and wonderful lyrics it truly is up there with the best musicals including Le Miz, Cats, Sweeney Todd and Wicked.

Gerard Butler can't possibly play him on the West End. Yuck. He can't even hold it in a film, when he has dubbing and can do a million takes, if he needs to. Plus, how the hell can you follow something like the original? It was ALW's magnum opus.

ALW, being the best composer on the face of the earth, is definitely going to come up with fantabulous music for the sequel, but what if the storyline totally sucks? i mean, they can't have the phantom "fall in love" with another girl in manhattan, can they? that would just destroy all of his passion for christine in the first one!

i've also heard that ALW and Tim Rice have been making a bunch of changes to Gaston Leroux's original book, and i love the original so much! if they dare do anything that contradicts it, i will flip out.

anyway, i'm on the edge. i think that it will either be a total sucess or a total disaster (although, of course, i'm hoping for the first).

Oh my goodness, if they're going to do a sequel, they have to do it right! Like as in, not set in Manhattan! Why does everyone have to take a beautiful, classic story and twist it to suit our modern day world? Can't people just leave the classics as they are? The reason we go to see movies is not to remind of us the tragedies going on in our world, but to help us escape to a world that we want to be a part of if even just for a couple hours.

Just a question...how is the end open for anymore story telling?
Are they going to resurrect Christine from the dead and take Raoul to the fountain of youth or something?
She's dead! And Raoul is like 80 years old!

I'll always be anxious for any new ALW musical. I, however, wonder if he shouldn't have had the original team: Hal Prince, Cameron MacIntosh, etc. I think he's going to be very very lucky if this sequel actually works. On the other hand, his music will be fantastic, I'm sure.
