I believe its amazing how he even came up with an idea for a sequel because the end of the original was so open. I think it will be great!!!!

O you guys would be dissapointed, i read a preview. this book is so disgusting compared to the Leroux version. PLUS The book follows Erik at age 27 when hes supposed to be well over 50, and also it follows Andrew Lloyd Webbers story, not the book. its disusting.

I think if they made a sequel it would be terrible. However, I would like to see one made because I think it would be entertaining in a way.

Well, If they are going to make a sequal they should leave it only at the paris opera house and never put christine in there! It should be something completly new, you know?

Sigh! The knee-jerk reaction here seems immediately against the idea. As far as I can tell, the sequel will be for the stage and it will be ages before it is ready for opening - years, not months. Of all the "sequels" written that I have read, Forsyth's idea is much the most possible. It makes real sense when thinking of both the stage and film versions of Phantom. Everyone seems to object to the spoiling of Gaston Leroux's original, but although there were bits from the original story borrowed by ALW, it did not follow the original slavishly. I would look forward to it. Shame that a film couldn't cast the principals from the film of Phantom.

I COMPLETELY LOVE THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA! i dont know if i really want a sequel. wouldn't it be really awkward? such an old story and now we have to have one new, totally different story? i'll just wait and see cause i'm really not sure. the reviews aren't that great, but im gonna read the book to see, but i'd see the sequel anyways despite anything else. it might ruin the whole idea but i would take the chance.

*Mourns* If this is true, shot me now!!! Leroux must be turning in his grave! I deteste the idea of a sequel, and sadly will begin to deteste Webber too if he decides to follow this through! Why can't people get new ideas nowadays? It irks me. Sequels always ruin the original for me...I just cannot believe this. Please don't do it!!!

A friend of mine may possibly be publishing her Madrigal series (a sequel to LEROUX's Phantom of the Opera). What I have read of it is absolutely fantastic and far better than the Phantom of Manhattan novel which is intended to be used for the ALW sequel. If only there was a way to get in touch with Mr. Webber, I truly wish he could give her work a look instead of the current plans. There are so many new and lovable characters, angst, drama, adventure... and an ending that can tie everything together and leave us all with a sigh of relief and satisfaction. It kills me nearly daily to think he's making such a mistake as using the wrong novel for his sequel!

Now having read the many positive and negatives here and elsewhere i feel compelled to comment. I read Leroux andhave seen numerous performances of the musical including the one here in las vegas. They all are wonderful in their own ways as is the movie and the Nancy Hill-Pendergast? sequiel. It ended sadly too but was a nice book. Each has it's own value and beauty just as each of the phantoms i have seen had his own beauty to the phantom,rg. Gerard in the movie was no where near Michael Crawford, yet his passion made up for any weaknesses in voice. Originals are always hard to top or replicate, but for those of us that loveeeeee a story and loveeeee to be entertained and taken away from reality sometimes, a sequel i.e continuation of a story , is always I feel what we hope for deep down inside. Cmon now does anyone out there really like how the musical/movie/. book ended with Christine going with that p___y gay boy! Puhleaseeeeeeeee! I will read all the other sequels for the sake of entertainment and decide for myself what ending I like best. keep in mind the original is not a true story so it is great to be able to end it anyway we like. Hopefully this sequel that ALW writes will have a happy ending. Hey at least it is not a phantom of the soap opera where anything is possible. In that case erik could have been decapitated and somehow he would have survived to return much later . lol!

I am i love with the phantom of the opera and i am torn between if i would like a sequal. If they try to make it modern i will be devistated, but i do want to know if christine ever has any contact with the phantom after the incident because as clearly shown at the end of the movie he still loves her even though she is dead.

For anyone who is in favor of the sequel I urge you to read the short story "Beauty and the Opera or the Phantom Beast" by Suzy McKee Charnas and they afteryou have read that tell me if you really truly wish to see a sequel. I find it a repulsive idea. If ALW wanted to make a completely different story than Gaston Leroux's and discount him and his writing, then perhaps he should find a different name, and history! If he wants to sully this beautiful story then perhaps we should encourage him to some originality. Its discusting the idea of Frederick Forsythe's story being the sequel. Read it and you'll agree.
