This is great. These restaurants mentioned will be next on my list to visit. I've tried Harmoni and it was fantastic.... can't wait to hit up the others.

yep, pretty amazing that educated folks make better decisions...hm!
good luck fighting the illnesses caused by pesticides and such when they're discovered years down the road...oh, and don't forget about irreversible damage that pesticides and such cause.
don't believe me? take a gander at the baby products being reported to cause reproductive harm. we should always trust corporations and chemicals, right? no need to enjoy a tomato straight from the earth when you can much on one coated in chemicals that was shipped in from south america!

Hello! the invent of pesticides and fertilizers has allowed mankind to eliminate a lot of famine in the world.
Doesn’t anyone read history?
Plus trade with other regions allows one to specialize and benefit from the economies of scale.(ie have you ever bought a car made in Orlando or and orange from New York)
You just end up paying more for and inferior product because it is cost more to produce.
Amazing what the liberal, overeducated, class will fall for.
Amazing what the uneducated will say to try and sound educated.
Keep eating your chemically enhanced veggies from Mexico and thanks for not supporting our local economy.

isn't the choice of a restaurant cultivating or purchasing locally grown organic produce a matter of free market choice? regardless of whether you think there is a "need" there is a demand for such products, and you are still free to purchase the cheaper, factory farmed, mass produced produce grown with synthetic fertilizer and pesticides. if someone is willing to pay more for a product that is grown locally and organically why discourage it? seems like a capiltaist concept if ever there was one!

Locally grown, organic foods tend to have a better, fresher taste.
Aside from that, in terms of economics, it's actually much more cost effective to grow locally to avoid high costs of shipping & storage.
By the time foods are shipped across the country or into the country, the prices are much higher and they are already a week or so old.

I am still not quite sure how you link eating orangic foods to being liberal? There are plenty of republicans eating organic too. Try it, you'll probably notice you will loose weight (due to foods not being pumped full of corn syrups & sugars) and be healthier.

I am not a vegan, no a vegetarian. However I do not want to eat Genetically Engineered veggies or fruits, meats with very harmful hormones, etc. I go to Publix where they have a great organic section, also meat too. The man made chemical they inject into the animals,(a pellet behind the ear)"hormones" & your regular store veggies/fruits etc. cause autism, allergies, cancer & added weight to your body. They finally are finding all these things out, why people weigh more in our Country. Other Countries refuse--to buy our Genetically Engineered foods. This is a fact. They are alot smarter then we are. This is far more dangerous than any pesticide. A fact! Eat healthy, grow it yourself & not from a Genetically Engineered seed. Milk has hormones(cows)& our dear Govt.,the FDA has caused all this for greed only. If you cannot read & know what the ingredient is on any product, don't buy it. Gee wiz. Read the indgredients on ice cream. Switch to Breyers, all natural. Get smart, people. stay thinner too.

It's nice to see that local restaurants are going back to the time-honored tradition of purchasing locally-grown wares. I obviously wasn't around in the first half of the 1900's, but before we became so dependant on "outsourcing", restaurants and stores relied heavily on local farmers markets for the ingredients they needed to create culinary delights. I am so happy to see that we are going back to a more "community-centric" market concept, where we can all take pride in our local businesses...whether we grew the produce, raised the livestock, or cooked it up for our friends from around the corner. It's kinda heartwarming, you know?

Ahhh.. another libertarian touting the dogmas of efficiency and cost-effectiveness as though they were the alpha and omega of the human existience. Consider the tough-skinned small and under-ripe tomatoes genetically engineered to withstand the factory processing and long distance travel to your market. No doubt they're cheap, and efficiently processed. They do not compare in flavor, texture or nutrition value with a locally grown, vine ripened tomato. Perhaps if you're willing to eat Kraft Foods 'processed' cheese product or these plasti-tomatoes served up to you by minimum wage welfare recipients then more power to you and your brave new world. I prefer buying local and organic and raised by the honest work of good people.

You are wrong! It is not cost effective to use only locally grown produce in all cases, this is where the value of trade comes in.
It would be literally impossible for the chef at Houston's to produce all of his supplies
1. He would need a lot more expensive Winter Park land to to do it.
2. It would cost him too much to take up his time or his expensive labor to tend to and harvest his crop
I like Houstons and the idea of fresh local produce and I know what they are doing is simply marketing. He cant grow or buy enough local produce to support one Friday night in that restaurant
The reason I comment is because of these blind liberals that forget all of the history of commerce and why we have come to the current distribution model that works so efficiently in todays real world.
Trust me even the "super green" restaurants have Sysco as a main supplier if you know who they are
not so much in orlando - but in other states you find a growing number of restaurants that purchase as much locally grown produce and other products, such as bread, as possible, and change their menus often in order to allow for as much locally grown/produced products. this articel isn't all about a retuarants growing their own food, but who buy food an dother products from local resources.

this isn't a liberal vs conservative issue or republican vs democrat... but simply an article on a free market choice being made by restaurants to serve a particular niche... yes, it is a form of marketing - but one born out of a real need - consumer demand - not a perceived need as created by an ad agency.

SYSCO, US Foods, etc may stock the chain restaurants, but local distributors are often favored by your smaller mom and pop restaurants , green/vegetarian/vegan or otherwise.

You support Bush's $3 trillion spending package, released today; you love watching Fox News; you think Rush is the best thing on the radio airwaves; you have multiple guns locked away somewhere; you could care less about the betterment of all people, only yourself; to heck with public education; hike up the college tuition rates; keep troops in Iraq until the end of time; big corporations are great; big oil companies are the best; etc., etc.? All the makings of a selfish, greedy, money grubbing Republican. If it looks like s!@#, smells like s@!#...then it must be a Republican.

Wish to find sources for fresh produce, free-range eggs, etc. Could not find a number for Lake Meadows to ask them what local stores are carrying their eggs and under what label. Did reach Harmoni and will gladly go there for fresh produce.

what in the world does this have to do with buying locally grown organic produce????

this is not a political issue - this is about choice... there is plenty of factory farmed food and organic produce to go around - everyone is free to make their own personal chioce... and that is all that matters.
