Me again. I hope no one takes offense to my comments. I also double posted. But I agree with what I said. I get the impression that she is a little conceited. If she didn't exude that "I'm better than every Indian girl" then perhaps it would be better. Also, people can tell the talk show hosts and everything, "I don't want you to announce me as TMBWITW. I want to be taken seriously as an actress. I want my role to be highlighted not me." But she went along with it, she let them announce her as TMBWITW. THen, during the interview, she appears coy and self deprecating. That's so phony! People can see through that. IT was so annoying that her agent booked 3 or 4 shows where she gives the same answer over and over again. That's why doing press junkets (and she barely promoted B&P, if you noticed) is such a bad idea. You'll be forced to say the same thing beccause people have the same questions. She is supposed to do a junket for Provoked, and I can imagine her going on Oprah and talking for the first time about how Salman Khan beat her over the head with the corpse of a black bear. Sheesh!

Hi Josh,

It's so nice to read about your views. I was surprised to see someone responded to my post. I figured people would be all over me. But, I'm glad you get me, I mean quite frankly, the whole thing smacks of racism. Okay, it's one thing when caucasian people do that to people of of color, but when the original race itself does it to themselves. Well, I don't know what to say.....

I also have to agree with you that Madhuri Dixit was the saving grace in that overrated movie. But, she simply didn't get noticed..maybe if her eyes were blue? Hmmm...Anyway, I think she exuded a mature sensuality that I just don't see in Ms. Rai, Rekha has this quality also. But, maybe that is her charm, she is cute and pretty. But, then what does that say about society at large, when that is what makes us define a woman as the most beautiful in the world? I personally think Devdas should have been re-named Dysfunctional. The only sane people in that movie were the grand mother and the prostitute. But, the cinematography was exquisite, hiding a very bizarre story line... Just my opinion....I actually returned the movie to the store. I just couldn't bear to watch it. I figured I better check it out, with Cannes and the rest of the world going cuckoo for it. Once again I will say it. Ms. Rai is one very very luck chica. God bless her......

That's so funny you said that, I was just thinking that today. I think that's just the way she's built. She has that typical washed out Hindi actress look everyone seems to love. I find her to be exquisitely boring.

"t looks like she really is trying to be caucasian."

The term Caucasian race, Caucasian or Caucasoid is used to refer to people whose ancestry can be traced back to Europe, North Africa, West Asia, Indian subcontinent and parts of Central Asia [1], a region known as the Caucasus"

That's like saying that black man is trying so hard to be... a black man.

Despite what you think... you can find blonde indians in Kashmir, Madras. Blue eyes is comparatively common in Rajasthan, Gujurat, Punjab, Kashmir. all the northern states. YOu can even find it in the south!
I'm north indian and i have dark brown hair. Jesus. Do you know how sick I get of people asking me if I dye my hair and people who just don't believe that it is this colour all by itself! AAARGH

When I went to india I saw a good amount 10-20 indians with light eyes. I wasn't keeping count or anything I'm just saying that's pretty high seeing as how I didn't stare at people in the eyes trying to find them or actually was even in crowd situations much.
Go away she is beautiful and she wins. There is no such thing as the most beautiful woman in the world. But if there was it would be an opinion - and my opinion is that she is (well was - she looks a bit dead these days).

Okay You may think that she is worshipped for having caucasian traits. That's complete rubbish. She's worshipped for being beautiful and for hte work she does.
When a white person has blue eyes it's no biggie. In fact it kinda looks normal.. plain.. boring. So when a darker skinned INdian does of course it's gonna stand out and make people go "Wow" or whatever because darker skin and lighter eyes work amazing together - and it's different, unique.
It would be like me saying all Westerners love blonde hair and blue eyes. and tanned skin. Lets not forget the complete craze there is for people to constantly have meditteranean, indian, BROWN looking skin.
Being pasty over here is pretty much seen as ugly. Being red haired is certainly seen as being ugly by a really high amount of people. So really it works both ways.

I am aware of what the term caucasian means. I Just think she is being celebrated because she has blue eyes. Which is more common amongst
European people than of Asian people. I am also aware that people in India
have light eyes, but they are not the majority. I just don't see the big deal about her. The reference to her eyes are what I always hear first. She is not that big of a deal. She thinks she is, you know the old saying "people treat you the way you let them. If you do not agree with some one's opinion, you
should not tell them to go away. At least I'm not one of the brain washed masses drooling over this mundane woman who acts like a bratty teenager who needs a lot of attention and knows how to get it.

No,
I personally believe that she looks just as beautiful with brown eyes. I mean look at some of her films - she wears dark contacts for those.
I think the fact that she has well actually GREEN eyes (not really blue) adds to they mystery of her. I mean not many people knew of Indians with blue/green/hazel etc. eyes - but they exist plentifully.
She is celebrated NOT for having blue/green eyes, but rather that she is an exemplification of the diversity and mystery that surrounds countries such as India, China, Nepal etc. which many westerners are incredibly ignorant about.
I've seen so many posts of people saying "She does not have blue eyes! Only we whites have them!"
Ignorance... tha'ts all i'm trying to combat here. I'm not as you say acting as 'one of the brain washmed masses drooling over htis mundane woman who acts likea bratty teenager'-
You dont' even know her! How moronic of a statement is that. I'm certainly aware that she is not this perfect angel.. but i'm also not foolish enough to label her things without actually knowing her.

The reason why she got so pissed on Letterman is because of the complete ignorace of Westerners. They just ask the same questions over and over again - expecting some kind of new response - and when she gives that response they just act bewildered.

So fucking what if she lives with her parents. GET OVER IT. She got asked that and that was mentioned in every single interview she did.
The whole point of this frustration and confusion that goes on is just IGNORANCE. YOu can't sum what INdia is in a few sentences like she was asked to. India incorporates the most amount of races, and cultural diversity seen in the world. You go from east to west north to south.. everything is different. the peoples, places and the traditions.
I went to India for 4 weeks last summer and came back with a feeling of "I wasn't ready for that".

Isn't it funny then.. that the only real Indian actresses (aside from sexy Parminder Nagra) such as Aishwarya and newcomer and exact lookalike to Aishwarya Sneha Ullal (google image her.. and you wil see) to get real hollywood roles (i mean where you don't play the stereotypical indian doctor or cornershop owner) are ones that have fair skin and light eyes. To say that she is celebrated for having blue eyes is true yes --- but MUCH MORESO IN THE WEST.
What is see is jealously. To state things such as "she thinks she's IT" "better than other indian women" - just highlights the fact that you're willing to make a judgement about somebody on the fact that they're pretty and are recognised for being pretty. Grow up yourself instead of believing yourself to be high and mighty because you refuse to recognise that somebody is beautiful.

She also said, the western media FORCED her to go to Hollywood because of Devdas. I mean, geez. Devdas was opulent and a bit ridiculous compared to the older versions. It doesn't seem a bit like how it was supposed to be at the turn of the century. Paro was poor, and even before her marriage, was living in a house the same size as Dev and had weird glass fixtures and an outdoor bedroom where the moon rises suddenly! From the beginning, "Dadi ma! Devdas aro!" or whatever the hell that hag was yelling. The jokes were cheap and not clever. And if I hear "Iiiish" from Aishwarya one more time.... Sadly, this is the first time that I thought Shah Rukh Khan was less dramatic than his co-star. The highlight of that movie would HAVE to be Madhuri Dixit yet she doesn't seem to be running to Hollywood. She wasn't even at Cannes. It's like how that shame of a movie "Jeans" (which insults its audience from the title assuming that Indians don't know what Genes are. I really think Bollywood thinks it is smarter than the rest of India- otherwise, why would they blatantly steal scenes from movies and assume no one would notice? It's like they think they're the only ones who watch Hollywood movies. Come off your high horse, it's really fine down here!) She has always said that peer pressure made her go to Miss India, and film offers were pouring in forever since she was in the womb. Everyone tied her hands behind her back and put a drama mask on her face and shoved her in front of the camera. How dumb does she think we are? Anyone who admits they've had it bad, they've had to wait in the cloisters, who has served more coffee than drank it is real. She is trying to seem larger than life. I don't think it's true.
IF she could admit, "I really want to work in the west. I was dying to be a model. I really wanted to be an actress." Instead of this crap she spouts like a beauty queen she would be real. I don't think she deserves that compliment yet.
I think it's good in a way that Aishwarya is going to America. She will be treated there like any other budding actress. She will be measured (for the most part) on her acting ability and not on the colour of her skin or her eyes. I think her PR people can only book so many shows that declare her the "most beautiful woman in the world" before the media gets tired of it.
I read somewhere on a brilliant blog that it (AKA Julia Roberts christening her TMBWITW) is like eating a donut and saying, "Oh my god! This is the best donut in the world!" and then the next day, seeing a billboard with the picture of the donut and the title, "the best donut in the world". It's like, oh my god. There's no words.
Hey just a little addition i would like to make; i read that she wasnt forced at all infact when Devdas was pemierred at cannes Ash commented that she wouldnt mind doing Hollywood projects hence she is where she is now! i cannot beleive anyone can force her - she is afterall in her late 30's

I have no problem recognizing beauty. I am an artist, I love beauty and have a very good eye. Neither am I jealous, far from it. I just find it very unfair that this woman is being celebrated when there are so many other deserving woman out there. Just sick and tired of the light skinned light eyed woman in general as being seen as beautiful. I know who Sneha Ulal is, I actually think she is better looking, her features are not exaggerated like Miss Rai's. I don't even care about coloring, it's the features, she has big droopy eyes, but just because the irises are blue, people are acting like she is so out of this world.

As far as making a judgement there is something called being perceptive about people and their behavior. You may want to try it sometime, instead of
resorting to profanities. I would love to jump on the band wagon and love this woman. But, I just can't, she dresses horribly, has nothing interesting to say. Comes off like a teenager to me. She is very lucky and doesn't even know it or appreciate it. I think you are the one who need to grow up since you relate to someone who themselves has the maturity of a teenager.

This is my last post about this woman. I have more important things to do, than try to reason with people who are in love with mediocrity. Enjoy!

Didn't I just say that I used to be her biggest fan? And not of her eyes? But I remember ever since Miss India, people were going gaga because she had green eyes. They were so proud, and as was she, that she was "pure" indian (meaning no white or german father, sorry, dia) and still looked white. That's why she said she wanted to go on a quest (on the 60 mins thing) to prove people wrong about indians. That they CAN look white without being white. That they CAN speak english well. It's a noble quest. But useless, if you ask me. The best way to counteract racism, is to be the best person you can be. That itself will destroy prejudices. I don't need to go around standing on a pulpit preaching, I can just live. I wish she was just an architect. A quiet beauty. But it is her life. Let's leave it at that.

Obviously there is something about Aishwarya that we are all talking about her. Yes she is beautiful and she is lucky and she has green eyes and perfect skin etc. Her acting is mediocre. In some movies she has excelled and in others she has flopped. Somewhere down the line she got a break in Hollywood and interviews on Letterman and Oprah shows...I think it is we who put too much hope on her as the woman ambassdor of India. And she did not live upto our expectations. She has not claimed to be brains of India... but having got the chance she miserably failed to impress us all... as she giggled and was always on backfoot trying to defend her Indian values. Questions liek that would be asked just for jest and an intelligent person will answer them back wittily... Suhmita may have done better...who knows... then again the only woman who had the presence and intellect was Indira Gandhi... beautiful, intelligent... and one stare answered all. Not everyone has the art to appear on Oprah, Letterman or 60 minutes and look calm, comfortable and give good sensible intelligent witty answers. So Aish failed there... but she has long way to go in her acting career and can mature as she goes. She is a director's actor and again no Meena Kumari who was an excellent actress but not that beautiful...
