Quiet in the library? Shhh!

When we learned libraries were installing video games to draw teens and young adults through their doors, our first thought was that it's like luring people to church with free beer.

The whole key is in the last paragraph - if they come to play video games (or check their e-mail, another hotly contested "library" function), they may find that there are things there they never knew about , and which are valuable to them. Let's hear it for video games!

As an aging baby boomer now in grad school, I tried studying at my local library. It was way too NOISY for studying. I may try it again when the kids are in school. I'm not what the noise level will be like when video games come on the scene.

Why can't video games be kept in community centers? Or sever one half of a library and make it a separate community center? Don't bother those of us who appreciate the silence and find it hard to read with noise.

Just like anything else at the library, if it is implemented properly, there is no problem. I remember going to the library as a kid and listening to comedy records. They had separate rooms set aside for that purpose. I can't imagine that any library is going to have a big screen TV set up in the middle of the study desks with kids playing video games!
The study sited proves that this is working to get kids and young adults into the library. That is great! Keep evolving with the culture.

The games are for checking out. They are not played at the library. This is actually a great resource for parents to save money on buying or even renting video games. Then while the parents are there they can pick up their books as well as the kid getting books too. That's what mine do.

Oh this is interesting. I hope this happens to a library in my area. When I first found out about movies being able to be checked out from libraries I was surprised.
