'World of Warcraft' is 'meth' of video games

Dear Straight Talk: Since seventh grade, our 17-year-old son has been entrenched in the video game, "World of Warcraft." On school days, he plays four hours a day, on nonschool days, eight to12 hours.

I just love the way people blame video games instead of the parents. The parents are the ones in charge, not the other way around.
There are too many variables to just lay blame on a game, or the people who make it.
Sometimes the person may have an obsesive compulsive dissorder, common in addicts of every nature.
Maybe your son is not athletic, or is not good in social situations. You cannot change these things in many cases. You can't force a person to be socially interactive, nor can you make them the football quarterback.
If WOW gives him a feeling of self worth, or being good at something, why take that away. Kids could be doing alot worse things than gaming.
Anything that is done in excess can be harmfull.
Moderation is the key word here, not "let's blame it on a third party"

I have been around Meth addicts and my son plays WOW. While I would rather him do something more productive, I would never compare him to a Meth addict. He graduated with high honors in high school and he and all his "vidiot" (my favorite definition) friends are all currently in college. At least they are not at bars or in jail!

Allow your son to play, only if he can pay to maintain the expenses. Shut down your isp, and do not pay for his monthly subscription, I would also require him to get a job. Limit the "chores" around the house he can to to make money, those are responsibilitys that he should be doing anyhow as part of the household. A Job will also help with the social interaction.

Unless this game is making the kids lie, cheat and steal everything you own, I would hardly compare it to a meth addict.

My son is very responsible and I have NEVER funded this activity. I do pay for the internet because we all use it. My son holds down a job, goes to school full time and has social interaction. Thanks for the advice on raising my child.

To say that I would never compare someone who plays WOW to a Meth addict. Didn't you read what I said? I wanted to let people know that even the new generation plays games that are rather foreign to us, they still are capable of being good people, college students and responsible employees. I don't see where I ever asked for for help with my parenting!

Let ur kidz play I need more honorz!!!!!!111

I spent alot of times playing video games as I grew up, my parents made a point to let me do whatever I wanted to do as long as my grades didn't suffer. Today I'm working in a fortune 500 company and doing fine. I thank my parents for instead of condemning my interests, they tried to build upon them. They would sit down and ask me questions about when I was doing in game. I don't really know/care if they were genuinely interested in the game at all, but they took time to interact, they took the time to reach me and treat my interest with respect. Technology is going to change the activities people are going to take part in, deal with it. If your kids spend too much time playing video games, do the following:

1)Plan a day of activity for you and your child.
2)Unplug modem.
3)Interact and engage your child.

Most of the kids I know that had issues with playing too much WoW had poor parents. Parents that come home, mutter "hey" and then proceed to sit down on the couch and shove pop-tarts in their face, only to emerge an hour later shrieking GET OFF OF THAT COMPUTER!!!!. Parents almost seem to be so turned off by what kids choose to spend their time doing, that they don't even take the time to try and understand why they enjoy doing it.

We as parents have used the technology to " babysit" our children. I am guilty of it and regret not spending more " quality time" with my 16 year old.He now drinks Redbull gets wired and spends hours killing people , blowing stuff up and trying to get national rankings on the internet.I have played the games and they are VERY real and VERY intense.Being a single parent and working Nights and weekends I have been unable to " parent " the way I should. The long term effects could be negitive or the maybe the next war will be fought with controllers and I think then the US would save lives AND kick butt.I agree with warrior , take your kids out and spend time with them and give them a reason NOT to play the games.

Being a 19 year old myself who plays MMOs I can relate to what everyone is saying. Recently I uninstalled all of my MMOs since it's summer, and I know that if I have an MMO in front of me that I won't be outside as much as I -should- be, but that's my decision. Those who are saying, "Tear the coord out of the wall, and tell them to pay the bills if you want to play this game" are taking the easy way out.

Don't try to manipulate your kid. Don't take your anger out on them just because you don't understand what is going through there minds. To most a game like WoW is an escape from reality, sure, to some it's nothing more than a good past-time. I can tell you right now that a lot of kids have anxiety issues nowadays, problems that parents can't spot. I've gone through a fair bit, I guess. My 'teenage' share of problems, and my paretns, who are very loving and responsible (in my opinion at least) didn't take notice of these things.

I was always encouraged to use the computer less in a fashion that I adapted to, but since finishing highschool I've adapted my own ways. I still play MMOs, but I've partially grown out of the addiction, and I believe everyone does eventually. It lessens to a fair degree, because if your child has any sense, they'll realize what a game like WoW can do to them.

I read some of the opinions on here "Throw the game in the trash!" or parents worrying the hell out of themselves, and I see a weakness. If you can't sit down and tell your kid how you'll feeling, add sensible enforcement. Time limits if you have to, but don't force them to do things that you want them to do, in other words, being in a band, scouts, etc. I can tell you that it'll only fuel their addiction out of anger, and they'll feel like they have no independancy. You have to give them the ability to do what they please, but in a sensible fashion. In other words communication is the key.

It is a free country... Your son is practically an adult.... So what if he wants to play WoW... You are just having trouble dealing with the fact that your "Little Boy" is basically an adult... Also I dont recommend that method of "Forcibly Taking It Away" because your a middle aged woman taking something away from a 17 year old boy... Yea, Not going to work... Hey if he is paying for it himself then leave it be otherwise be more specific in your posts... If you dont like it then tell him to get his own place otherwise dont post idiotic comments on the internet asking for help with your son... He is your son you deal with it... posting comments for help is like screaming "IM A BAD PARENT!".... So yea deal with it.

You should never blame the "Problem" on MMORPG'S... It's not their fault that your son is anti-social... The game isnt the problem YOU are the problem... You choose to baby your son and not deal with the problem at the source... YOU choose to not do anything with your son and take him places... World of Warcraft is an escape from reality, it is reality within an online world... You are the one to blame, WHY? Because you have shown no effort to deal with the problem... It was your choice to not spend enough time with your kid... And to be honest it is probably a good thing that your son plays WoW because atleast he can socialize and interact with other players who have the same interests as him... You should be glad your son isnt a criminal, because parents like you who dont spend time with their child and post comments on the internet asking for guidance about their child obviously dont care enough about their child... Dont blame the game blame yourselves...
