moosechelle, her kids and obama are always shown stuffing their pie holes with french fries n burgers. Just more do as I say and i'll do what I want from these posers in th WH. Pretty soon the only food in school when mousechele gets done is chitlins n greens. Hope and change jammed down our throats one regulation at a time from these 2 commies.

Maybe we should rename the to Obamatoes and then they could make a comeback.I could care less what Michelle thinks and I will eat my potatoes and leave the peas. It is corect serving procedure to serve peas with mashed potatoes so they stick to fork and do not drop on the floor.

As many of us know, the cause of the Great Famine of the 1840's in Ireland was the failure of the staple food, the potato. In addition to potatoes, their diet was augmented by milk, butter and in seafaring areas, fish of various varieties. Naturally, no single food should be considered the primary source of nutrition but farmers grew them because the yield, given the small amount of land they had for their own, was substantial enough to feed their families. They also grew wheat and barley and raised some livestock but profits from these were considered "rent" to their landlords and somewhat assured the farmer that he would be allowed to retain his small parcel of land.

Beginning in the 1860's, when it became evident that the American Civil War was not going to be one of short duration, Irish born army recruiters, or those of Irish descent, began signing young, healthy Irish males into the military as they diembarked from at various points of entry in the US. Many of these had survived the Famine or had lived through the lean times that followed it.

According to statistics gleaned from military records of the time, which are not entirely accurate, especially where the ages of the recruits were concerned, the native, newly arrived Irish were significantly taller and several pounds heavier than the average American recruit.

After the Famine, efforts were made to induce Irish farmers to vary their crops, adding cabbage, turnips and other alternatives in the event of another Famine. Most did this, but retained their reliance upon the potato. Even today, many people of Irish descent, such as myself, feel that a dinner, especially a holiday meal, is incomplete without potatoes in some form. When I was a child, colcannon, which is a combination of mashed potatoes, carrots and cabbage was considered a special treat.

Given this little bit of history, I would think that maligning the potato and banishing it as unhealthy is a mistake. No one in his right mind would, as the pre-Famine farm families were forced, would make potatoes their primary source of nutrition, but when one considers that not only did the Irish survive on a potato-centric diet for hundreds of years, but that their youth, who were desirable recruits to fight in the Civil War were in general physically superior to American recruits, we need to rethink the value of the potato in the American diet.

It might be added that people of other ethnicities relied upon potatoes for some of their signature foods, such as the Polish pierogis that are very popular in my area. They are similar to tarts stuffed with potatoes and/or cheese. They are often deep-fried but can also be boiled and sauteed.

To me this is not just a matter of banishing the nutritionous potato from the American diet. It is a small issue, true, but smacks of government control of still another aspect of our lives. If it comes to it, I have enough land with my house to start a few "lazy beds" in the backyard. I will not have any government on any level tell me what to eat, just to satisfy someone in an unelected, honorary position. Michele may be looking for an easy way to lose weight, but I don't need one.

The "National Potato Council says the proposal would carry a large but unknown cost to farmers in lost sales, as well as a $6.8 billion cost for school districts that will have to line up more costly foods mandated under the guidelines." They say that alternative vegetables will be substituted, with what? Did the USDA (another czar position) forgot about the domestic produce shortages, due to all the recent adverse weather across the country which has already impacted the consumer with higher prices. Tax payers are going to get hosed again. This is an agenda of govt. knows what best for everyone hidden within good intentions.
