The U.S. Agriculture Department on Friday said Omaha meat packing company Nebraska Beef Ltd is recalling 1.2 million pounds of beef because it may be contaminated with a particularly dangerous strain of E. coli.

Gotta love those USDA folks for cutting their inspections and shutting down their labs under GWB.

1 Now so much of it is buried in the ground or burnt or other wise destroyed with no one shred of ecoli bacteria proof of contamination. I would like to know where all this uncontaminated recalled beef goes to because I suspect there is a huge underground market for it. Where is the dump or the incinerator? Which witness' hauled it there and physically saw it dumped or burnt? Maybe they just run it through a blender and flush it down the factory toilet? |

1 I'll eat the beef, wear the cotton and calculate PI to 60000 decimal-points. You may live in a TeePee and cr*p in a hole. |

The last time this happened, just a very few months ago, I read that they were putting the tainted beef into jars of spagetti sauce, etc. They'll make a show to impress us, then feed it to us in smaller amounts so they don't lose any money. lol |

Dont tell the South Koreans.
FYI - folks our great republican gov barely checks for mad cow. They check like 1% and even then it is only young cows that have much less chance of having the disease. Another sign of how our country is falling apart under conservative rule. Great job republicans! |

First of all, all a person has to do to protect themselves from E. coli is to COOK the meat! Noone should ever eat meat that is raw, be it beef, pork, or chicken. The reason this country doesn't check every animal for mad cow is the cost. We are so used to having cheap food, and this test would add on to the cost. Besides, all risk material is removed anyway. There is nothing to be afraid of. You have a much greater chance of dying in your bathtub than getting mad cow! When will people ever learn that most of the hype about mad cow is news media trying to get your attention so you will watch their program. They are a BUSINESS- they need viewers to stay in business. If I believed every half-truth, and all false and misleading information I heard on the news, I would stay in my bed all day with the covers pulled over my head. According to your daily news anchors, we are supposed to be "safe" all the time, and they offer a daily barrage of things to worry about. We have become a nation that reminds me of a flock of chickens. We run around scared of everything! I for one will continue to cook and eat beef. I like it and it is full of vitamins and iron. Why doesn't the media report on the positive-such as beef being a nutrient dense food, and 27% leaner than 20 years ago? Why don't they report that it has been proven to be actually heart healthy if you choose the leaner cuts? Why don't they report that the methane gas thing was very greatly exaggerated, and that cattle contribute actually a measly 2.5% of the methane gas ( the rest coming from factories, cars, chemical plants, etc.) People-don't just believe everything you hear on the news, investigate yourself and think for yourself. I refuse to live my life in fear just so some news channel can make money.

If they reuse it in food stuffs that come already cooked that is because they do at the factory what you do at home, cook the meat properly and ecoli dies deader than a doornail. But, to many people sample raw beef at home and the high brow section has steak tartare. Steak tartare is the highfalutin definition of eating ground beef, egg, onions, capers, anchovies all mixed together raw and eaten. |

Glad to hear some common sense regarding this issue.

I understand what you're saying and believe you are correct, but if I have read material on ecoli correctly, it is caused from feces in the food...which I don't want to eat whether it's been cooked or not. eeeewwww!! |

Then you probably don't want to eat any baked goods either because flour contains insect pieces, larvae, eggs, and excretment. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it's not there.

Actually it isn't feces in the food that is ecoli because ecoli bacteria is in feces so the problem results when feces comes into contact with the meat. If slaughterhouses were designed properly, the guts/intestines could be removed without breaking the "seal" which is tying off the internal side of the rectum and tying off the internal side of the esophagus and removing that as an unpunctured unit instead of slashing their way through a cow for all of its parts and then conveniently hosing it down but before hosing it the ecoli from the feces touching the meat has gotten inside the surface of the meat. I can gut thousands of animals and never once see or expose the contents of the gastrointestinal system and that goes straight down into the scraps hole intact. But these slaughterhouses use all parts of the cows insides and have all that working going on in the same area when the gastrointestinal system is so easily removed intact and taken elsewhere for processing even if it is nothing more that a different building on the same property. |

I bet you could eat every bit of that recalled beef an not get sick, just cook it throughly. The USDA does a fine job protecting the consumer. Everyone in this country is so scared of getting sick the food industry has to go the extra mile to keep you safe. There is an alternative, go to a small local butcher an get your meat there. You may pay a little more, but you can inspect the facilitys yourself. Most of the small butchers get the meat locally, and could probably tell you which farm it was raised on.

You are absolutely right-the recalled meat would be 100% safe if it was cooked properly. I think it is a huge waste to throw away all that meat when it could be eaten, not to mention the loss of income for the companies that produced it. I agree that alot of the problem is caused by worker error, much of that resulting from inability to communicate between bosses and workers. Irradiation is the answer, but the word scares people. By the way, I read an article today that stated there is mounting evidence that banning antibiotics, or severly limiting them in cattle may contribute to the E. coli increase. Maybe organic isn't such a great idea!
