The changes had been requested by food companies that produce frozen pizzas, the salt industry and potato growers. Some conservatives in Congress have called the push for healthier foods an overreach, saying the government shouldn't be telling children what to eat.

Exactly, so why are teabaggers telling them what to eat?

Just let them eat whatever they want, children "know" what's good for them.

I think the food purchases should be kept local and let the local and district school board decide. As long as it's inspected and safe, it would be healthier for the kids and the budget.

I’m kind of on the fence about this one.
Like many of you here, I went through twelve years of public school, and that meant many school lunches. Compared to the choices kids get now, my school lunch looked like something from a state prison. We never got a salad bar or fresh fruit or juice. And the choices were – eat it or bring something from home – which I often did and it didn’t kill me.

So if school lunches are unhealthy these days why don’t parents pack lunches for their kids? Because those parents are either too lazy or their kids are getting a free meal every day (some are even getting TWO free meals a day). I ask you, WHY should we be paying to feed children in school? How much does it cost to put a sandwich and an apple in a bag, especially if your grocery bill is being subsidized? Lunch is but one meal. It should not be THE meal because some parents are to irresponsible to feed their kids the other two.

I don’t mean to sound cruel, but is it not a parent’s responsibility to make certain their children are eating properly? Is it my responsibility to follow their children around and monitor the food their those kids eat? How many kids turn their nose up at a salad at school and then go home to a cabinet load of potato chips and cookies and soda? That ONE “healthy” meal at school isn’t changing any kid’s eating habits .

Can we PLEASE stop making it everyone else’s obligation to raise this country’s children. Yes, I understand parenting is expensive and difficult. Been there. But it’s something you choose to do and you should therefore not expect society to do it for you. And while I’m not against a healthy school lunch, I am against people who believe it’s a right to have all of their needs taken care of by others.

So you realy do want the Federal Government dictating every detail, every food classification, number of serving, portion size, calorie limits, whole grain content, sodium content, even dictate which items a child could decline for every school lunch progam. And you instinctively attack anyone who even proposes letting the states set the rules by themselves.

Yes your right, but when you look at all the insider trading congress does this would hinder there ability to make wealth cause the big agra companys that lobby and get the food contracts would get cut off and how do exspect congress to make money if they cant rig and vote in the companys to get these contracts.

There was a time..long ago..real hungry kids..went to school only for something to eat...most often it was a bowel of tomato soup,and a peanut butter sandwich.....

They as parents did not want their children to want from anything.so school meals did reflect their home meals...

Kids were active then,more school yard activities,physical ...

Along with portable video games,and this new generation of hand held gadgets...and the Politically correct restriction on school activities..kids tend to get fatter.

With Poverty higher than the Depression,unemployment very high,no incomes..most Family's with kids have a tough time at the Supermarket..even with food stamps at an all time high.

(CNSNews.com )- Visiting an organic farm in Hawaii on Saturday, First Lady Michelle Obama said that “arugula and steak” was her “favorite” meal and expressed her view that American children need to “get their palates adjusted” so they will begin eating properly.

Isn't it true that bread and butter are still available with food stamps??

Why are we paying TWICE? Once to give them food stamps and AGAIN to give away free food.

Makes no sense to me.

(and now Congress is wasting precious time on what is considered 'healthy')..
