Food Prices to Post Biggest Rise Since 1990

Consumers should brace for the biggest increase in food prices in nearly 20 years in 2008 and even more pain next year due to surging meat and produce prices, the Agriculture Department said on Wednesday.

My garden is coming in nicely. Should be able to start canning tomatoes and green beans next week.

Already canned some, but crops didn't do well this year, as compared to past years, only got about 60 quarts so far. We don't can green beans, we blanche first, then freeze; Bell pepers get washed and sliced, then frozen. Usually put up a few jars of pickled green tomatoes; tons of broccoli rabbe that we picked on a farm in early spring are waiting in the freezer to be cooked over the winter months. All organic and no chemicals...yum, yum!

Forgot to mention we often make our own bread and our own pasta too. Who needs grocery stores?

Really? Have you checked out the prices lately in health food stores? Notice how all the dollar deals are on things like mac n cheese and candy?

Just curious as to where you buy your flour if you don't need the grocery store.

Try the fact that most of our food is transported from many miles.

Also, corn has been redirected to making ethanol, which not only makes corn products more expensive (can you even buy stuff without corn syrup) but other foods we may buy to replace corn, as well as corn is fed to cattle and poultry.

Of course, the major reason is the cost of transportation, gas, which has been driven up by the shrinking value of our dollar as a result of Bush's deficit and the export of our manufacturing base.

Naturally helping people most severely affected by high gas and food prices runs counter to Republican philosophy so, during the difficult days ahead, we need Democrats in Congress as well as the presidency.

Oh Christ,

What a bunch of bullsh$t!

The central problem to this whole deal is that the environmentalist nut-cases and global warming fanatics won't allow the U.S.A. to fully realize its natural resources.

F$%K! There's a guh-zillion barrels of oil in the shale of CO, UT and WY, NOT TO MENTION WHAT CAN BE TAKEN OUT OF ANWR AND OFFSHORE!

But because of the 'HOLIER THAN THOU' mentality of the enviromentalist freaks and global warming A-HOLES, we'll never realize our true natural resource potential, will we?

And a lot of good people will suffer. But the enviro-NON-mentalists will never get that, will they?

I've read what you are saying, and on at least two areas of study (politics and energy), you are naive.

Maybe you weren't away of the wealthy landowners living along the coastlines of America who fought tooth and nail to prevent offshore drilling and the building of refineries anywhere near where they live.

They did not protest for environmental reasons. The protested because they didn't want ugly oil rigs and refineries in THEIR backyard. Not to mention, they can afford gasoline regardless of the price, so they don't care about the rest of the country.
