Loyola University said in a statement that "treating research animals in a humane fashion is a top priority." Research studies "in which animal health or welfare was at risk" have been discontinued, Loyola spokesman Jim Ritter said.

Yeah, after the animal rights group blew the whistle! Thank God for them!

Loyola is a Level I trauma center.
It is also a world renowned medical center.
Burn Unit, Neo-Natal, Organ transplant, Heart surgery and numerous other "cutting" edge technologies and treatments.
Not to mention Trauma.
If you have a life threatening condition,...
you better hope they take you there!
That doesn't excuse mistreatment of animals,...
but Loyola is top end.

Furthermore,....
The research facilities are in no way associated with the clinical care of patients. Just as the Rogers Park campus of Loyola University is not associated with the Medical Center in Maywood. Except in name alone.
That's right.
I know everything.

What crap! "treating research animals
in a humane fashion is a top priority." How can you humably treat a lab animal. How sick. Animal tests simply are not reliable. Penicillin killed rabbits in lab tests. Where wuld we be without that?? How do they sleep at night?

The Biggest outrage that EVERYONE should be talking about is how SAEN demanding complete access to the facility. Where in the Hell does some Animal rights zealots get off thinking because they're an AR group, they Should automatically be granted access. What's next? "OMG the President just swatted a Fly, we DEMAND immediate access to the oval office because we LOVE animals"?

So what? This is a medical research hospital.

Without the likes of Loyola University Medical School, Pfizer and bio research using animals where would civilization be today. Animal rights nuts are out of control in this country.

It's a University, not our government! They shouldn't have anything to hide (neither should our government but that’s another topic).

Thank God most people see that the abuse of animals not only wrong but signs of psychological issues. THAT is the issue here.

Wow! You are so tough because you have no compassion for animals. Not!

No one said to stop the research! They are just saying give them humane care. Letting a dog die after surgery because of neglect is not necessary.

You people that HATE radical animal activist are just as extreme and ignorant.

The article mentioned Loyola's facility being the worst in the state and perhaps the worst in the nation. Why are they practicing? Thank goodness for the research being stopped on animals, but come on, there must be additional problems not mentioned.

Do people realize that some stories are posted not because they are newsworthy but because they draw a lot of knee-jerk reaction, generate posts and provide concrete data for large media conglomerates to point to when they are out trolling for advertising revenue? If a story, weak as it may be, smacks of controversy (race, abortion, animal rights, Britney Spears) the hits on the website skyrocket.
I assume most people get it. Maybe not. There's not much to this story, if anything Loyola made mistakes and should correct them. OK? Let's move on.

Why is it that the Catholic Church has such issues with treating people and animals decently?
Priests who molest and are protected. Unecessary deaths of animals. Great.
Yet another reason why LOYOLA should not be tax exempt.

This has nothing to do with "animal rights", rather it speaks to "animal WELFARE".

Unless you understand the difference, you shouldn't be posting your ignorant and incorrect opinion.

If the need for animal testing still exists (with today's technology I question that), then the lives we recruit for this purpose should be treated with respect. Basic needs should be tended to, no animal should be left to die after a procedure.

It concerns me how many people show a complete lack of compassion for the suffering of these creatures. This borders on sociopathic behavior.

You're right, it is a university. A PRIVATE one, last time I checked. They should be able to control access as they see fit.

This reminds me of the dog I had when I was a kid, back around 1915.

We had a long rectangular yard, with a big tree at one end. We kept the dog, "Ol' Bill McKinley" tied to a rope anchored by the big tree at that one end.

Whenever "Ol' Bill McKinley" would get upset by a passing horse buggy or some such, he would run side to side and snap that rope tight again and again, for hours on end.

One day a big new Diamond Reo dump truck came passing and got poor "Ol' Bill McKinley" so pushed out that he pulled so hard on his rope and tree, that he turned the whole yard completely around! True.

They would have liked to 'study'
"Ol' Bill McKinley" at some school today.

Old Jack still thinks the world and all of "Ol' Bill McKinley" to this day.

That makes perfect sense. I think that I will start a "private" business, maybe religious based, and then rape and murder, and anything else that I wanted. And of course I should not be accountable to the law because it would be "private". You’re an idiot!
Your analogy is a bit of a stretch, and I'll bet that you know that already. I didn't say what Loyola did was OK, just that they shouldn't have to grant access to any type of loudmouthed activist group just because they "demand" it.
