The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hear two cases filed by Lexington couples who objected to same-sex families being discussed in their children's elementary school classrooms.

Freedom of religion is also freedom from religion. Your choice to worship should not be used to control other people's access to books. Your decision to worship should not curtail the free market of ideas. The court is right.

Bigots.

And now they're home-schooling, so while normal kids are being taught science, they'll learn hatred instead.

Do people really think freedom of religion means you get to force other people to follow your religious beliefs?

I agree with you wholeheartedly. But the sad thing is, you're right! They ARE teaching hatred to their kids in home-schooling and the number of home schooled kids is growing. Also, they really do think freedom of religion DOES give them the right to inflict their beliefs as far as they can.

While we can be happy for this victory, remember that what we see as "obvious" flies all over them and makes them even more determined.

I'm an independent...but the main reason I am voting for Obama this year is the Supreme Court. I cannot imagine what a disaster it would be if McCain got elected and either he, or Palin if he croaks, got so name more judges like those two losers Bush put on the court. And there are likely THREE judges that will be leaving soon...AT LEAST. And the radical right-wing ones are not on the list. So for the sake of balance on the Court, Obama really needs to get elected.

Even with a Democratically-controlled Senate (who would approve the judges) I don't trust McCain with his choice and I certainly fear what Palin would do. She is evil.

For an amusing take on this story: http://massmarrier.blogspot.com/2008/10/egad-...

This blog has been tracking Mr Parker's failures in court over this issue since their beginning and there are a number postings relating to his antics...

I sit here and wonder why people are so against this and I trully have no answer.
Some had the same arguement about inter-racial marriages, that seems to have been resolved.
Some talk about it has been this way since the beginning of time, why change.
I guess one could respond by saying if everyone walked off a cliff, would you.
Some just won't admit that they hate gays and lesbians.
My problem with this whole issue, is that those who support Prop 8, really are in favor of Discrimination and the removal of an American's right to freely choose who they want to spend their life with.
I contend, that if this was about some heterosexual who was being discriminated against, They would go screaming to get their rights, but it is not about heterosexuals rights.
It's about those freaks and their special rights according to heterosexuals, and I need to add, not all heterosexuals.
These threads are all the same.
Change the name of the thread, same arguemnt, same issue.
We are not allowed to talk about religion to someone who is not religious, but that does not stop the christian thumpers from thumping us anyway.
We are suppose to be respectful and polite because this is a public forum and everyone is entitled to their opinion, but instead we name call and want to let everyone know how right we are and how wrong they are.
Until May 15th here in California, this was at best a heated issue.
Now the world is coming to an end because Gays and Lesbians are getting married and most of the heterosexuals don't like it.
The majority rules and how dare someone overturn our right to judge others.
When ever something is done against public opinion, it is always those activist judges.
Yet, when they rule in favor of public opinion, they have done the right thing and mined their business.
It has been said that this Country was founded on Chrisitanity and though that might be true, the founding fathers were trying to get away from the tyranny of the King.
We have evolved as a country and a Nation, yet instead of being ONE NATION, we are seperate and not equal.
Someone told me to read our Constitution, well I took a look at it again.
In the beginning it says "We the people in order to form a more perfect union"
We as a nation are guilty of doing nothing but tearing this union apart.
All men are created equal, but not if they are gay or lesbian.
It is perfectly okay for gays and lesbians to bleed for their country, to lose body parts for their country, to defend EVERY AMERICANS RIGHT TO FREEDOM and to even die for their country, but not to marry the love of their life.
Somehow this is wrong.
Blessed Be

Of course they rejected it. It is a no brainier.

Their freedom of religion right allows them to not read it just as much as the author has a right to write it under the same freedoms granted by the Constitution.

What they are trying to do us usurp everyone's freedom to access this book based on their own views. And any court would see thru that.

The Supreme Court has much better things to do than to entertain suits from religious fanatics who are trying to censor the whole of society to align with their narrow beliefs.

Let 'em home school those kids. I've personally known three different home-schooled kids from way-over-the-top religious families who, the minute they got out of the house and into college, made their own decisions and started thinking for themselves. One of them interned for me.

My observation was that these kinds of kids tend to be so insulated and isolated that once they emerge into the larger world of diversity and multiple ideology, they either "normalize" very quickly and integrate socially, or they flunk out, being unable to accept social differences with their teachers, and go back to live at home, where they are never heard from again... until a few years later when they kill their parents or some other such breakdown. Funny thing is, the ones who DO manage to leave the dogma behind when they leave the nest tend to be of above average intelligence. Home schooling is a dice roll. Smart parents prepare smart kids, while the other kind of parents ensure their own child's failure in society.

I'm glad they're home-schooling their kids. They NEED to keep them away from normal children.

My partner is a teacher...and only "No Child Left A Dime" as we call it gets him more rialed up that the topic of home-schooling. There are a few, but a vast majority parents are NOT qualified to teach their kids all the things they need to know. Yes, they should instruct them in their beliefs, that's their right. But beyond that most home-schooled kids are way behind their peers when they get out into the world. There's less discipline and they just don't learn as much.

Plus...they often have a lack of some of the social skills that come with spending the day around other kids in school settings.

To ROSE T-H: I have read many of your posts and you are clearly a caring, classy person. You have proven yourself to be well-read and articulate, and above all, considerate. This post shows very much your frustration,(and I've seen it's appearance more and more lately). Please don't lose that loving, caring tone. I'm gay and have had to put up with quite a bit of crap in my life too. And a whole lot of a$$holes as well. It is frustrating to be treated like second-class citizens, and to see the people treating us this way as if it is their god-given right. I have no answers for you, other than to say I've made it my personal mission to simply be "better than them". Maybe there's a bit of conceit in there, I don't know, but I refuse to let them bring me to the point of total despair. I may rant and rave once in awhile, but after I blow off steam, a clearer head prevails. I know you're the same way. Hang in there, kid. We're all not alone, and we need to remind each other of that every now and again. Bless you!!!!!

KOOKY,
Thanks so much.
I wrote that late last night after being trashed by a few posters.

I am wondering, after we attain GlBT right, and we will, who are they going to turn their hatred toward? Who is the next minority that will have to live under the yoke of the the religionists? And more importantly, will we be able to see the discrimination as clearly for them as we do for ourselves?

Unfortunately, the answer to that is easy: illegal immigrants. Bigots are bullies, who ALWAYS target those least capable of defending themselves. Oh, and they're not waiting for us to establish our legal equalities... they're already starting-in.

For instance, here's the typical rhetoric from the website usillegalaliens.com :

"The lives of 12 U.S. citizens would be saved who otherwise would die a violent death at the hands of murderous illegal aliens each day.

Another 13 Americans would survive who are otherwise killed each day by uninsured drunk driving illegals.

There would be no one to smuggle across our southern border the heroin, marijuana, cocaine, and methamphetamines, which plague the United States, reducing the U.S. supply of methamphetamines that day, by 80%.

Our hospital emergency rooms would not be flooded with everything from gunshot wounds, to anchor babies, to imported diseases, to hangnails, giving American citizens the day off from standing in line behind illegals.

Eight American children would not suffer the horror as victims of sex crimes."

Notice that these statements target the same kinds of fears as the tired anti-gay rhetoric. they paint ALL illegal immigrants as violent, drunken, drug-smuggling sex offenders. The fact is that most undocumented immigrants support and contribute to our economy, and do jobs that many Americans are too damned lazy to do, because the illegals cannot qualify for government relief programs.

Fortunately, Obama has a very reasonable incentive plan to get these folks documented properly, and on the path to full citizenship.(And the latest CNN poll has him leading by nine points in Virginia--which hasn't gone to a Dem in the last ten presidential races. The electoral map looks so pretty in blue!)

that is the same agruement that I tell people when I talk to them. They still not ready the jump on the same sex wedding bandwagon, but or not ready to rights away from people once they realize they can be next.

The sad thing is that these kids are growing up in a cult-like environment with absolutely no chance to see other ideas, people, or "life-styles." They'll grow up even more convinced that their ideas are the only ones that count.

We should be supporting regulations on home-schooling that insure a FAIR exposure of the world outside evangelical extremism.
