HUGE waste of our tax dollars. More money for the corrupt officials in other countries.

Billions wasted on "Abstinence Only!" groups. In these areas AIDS is primarily spread by sex. Grow up and deal with it, and stop letting your personal religious judgments cause millions of deaths.

Paul, "personal religious judgments cause millions of deaths" is not true nor the problem. What causes the deaths is AIDS and BAD DECISIONS about sex. This is still an enormous waste of our money.

Republicans are conservatives, Democrats are not liberals. And Barbara Lee is a "leader" on the issue, Bush just "floated" the issue. More bias from the rapidly shrinking Sunpapers. Some people just never learn. We will cheer the day this rag closes its doors forever.

best way to fight any intruder be it a rat, a flock of birds, A virus,, is to take away its food supply. AIDs depends on the close proximaty of deviant populations to survive. The downside to aids is that it requires new hosts in order to continue.
stop treating it and eventually it will run out of hosts.

48 BILLION in our taxpayer money to fight health woes in foreign countries where their own governments keep their people ignorant and live off the money suckers like us keep sending them. NICE. What about 48 billion for poverty, aids, TB, and research into alternate fuel sources in our own country? Africa has nothing to offer us even in exchange politically or economically for us to look at this as a sound foreign policy. My government in action is pathetic in it's lack of connection to the struggeling American taxpayers. This type of waste is a slap in the face when many people have to give up recreation, clothing, and food to heat their homes and put money in their gas tank to get to work.

Abstinence Only education is a waste of time and money. It has proven futile in nearly every instance of its implementation ever. People will have sex. There is no stopping it.
I do have to say as well that I find it interesting that our government is willing to spend this amount of our tax dollars on health care for Africans when over 45 million Americans go without even basic health coverage.

to Westmonster What you are saying is not exactly true. In Uganda, the government had a big education campaign about safe sex and the churches encouraged their members to wait until marriage. Guess what happened? The rate of AIDS went way down, even as it was increasing in other African countries.
This disease is very preventable if people get some education about it. Preventing AIDS doesn't cost much. Some Africans believe old wives tales, such as if a man with HIV sleeps with a virgin he will be cured.
In the USA many more people die of cancer. I think we have all lost family members and close friends to cancer, people who didn't do anything immoral to get it. I think the money would be better spent on cancer research.

Over here in Israel, every citizen has health insurance. There is no such thing as a person convulsing on an emergency room floor who dies because the hospital won't admit him due to lack of insurance. Many minor ailments are treated by your family doctor before they become major problems that need hospitaliztion. Parents can take their kids to the pediatrician as much as they want for one reasonable trimester co-pay. We have a system of HMO's. Each family chooses which one they want to join. You pay according to your income. If you want more than the basic coverage, you can pay an extra fee. The main difference here is that doctors are not millionaires. I have not heard of months long waits for tests and operations for life threatening conditions like in Canada, although you may have to wait awhile if your life is not threatened. If little Israel (only 7 million people) can do it, why can't the USA, which is a much richer country?
