A conservative estimate would be that it probably avoided about $500K a year in lost productivity. If you regulate employee internet access as well the savings would be in the millions. How many people posting on Topix do you suppose are at work?
It's a pretty poor reflection of policy and oversight when employees aren't measured by what is accomplished. If there is time to play games, post on topix or anything other than what they were hired to do, it's due to no work quotas or lack of enforcement by eliminating personnel who don't meet them.

When you're reduced to uninstalling games that comes with a computer's operating system, you're already on the wrong track.

The lost revenue is due to paying employees with no work to do.

Toilet breaks and smoke breaks are two very different things. You can't tell somebody when they have to go, but you are not obligated to let them smoke on company time.

IT has the option of not installing games when they install the OS. That's the way it should have happened to begin with. Some people can't resist the temptation.

It is true that mission is everything and that good results come from realistic and agressive goal setting. I was not referring to the nine out of ten people who can work effectively that way.

The number of public employees is a matter of record. My very conservative estimate of time wasted is from my observations over many years. Feel free to dispute what I have seen.

Ideally you set goals, employess make them, and everyone is happy. Those who can't make their goals due to wasting time or inability to perform need to go away, and the games become moot.

Get with People! The most burning Republican issue is God Control!! BirthControl!
They don't care about the ecomomy.
The current president has dragged our country out of the Bush induced destruction and Republicans are PRAYING the country falters so they might be reelected.

A couple of questions for you. Who controlled the country's checkbook for 40 years prior to the 1994 midterm elections? Answer: Democrats

Who controlled the checkbook for the last two years of the Bush administration when the majority of the spending took place? Answer: Democrats

Now don't get me wrong there some progressive big government Republicans along the way but the majority of entitlement programs that our bankrupting our country has been instituted by Democrats.

One additional point you made the following statement. "They don't care about the ecomomy".

I'm curious how can talking points reciting liberals like yourself say on one hand that Republicans are coporate owned and only care about money then turn around and state that they don't care about the economy? To me a good economy and money go hand in hand.

it doesn't matter if it's microsoft games or staring into space, if there's no work, there's time for play

We are not in complete disagreement. I have however seen plenty of people who had plenty of work they should be doing wasting time playing games. It's not the only way to waste time, but some people can't resist them when they are there, and I think that 1 out of 10 is a good estimate based on observation. Why leave the temptation there? I try to move distractions out of my own way when I need to concentrate.

PS I would not immediately conclude that someone staring into space was being unproductive.

I wouldn't immediately conclude that someone playing games wouldn't do something else equally unproductive if they were removed from the computer.

Your stick approach would not be necessary if productivity goals were in place and enforced. Blame the managers and people in power (Allen) for failing to recognize uninstalling games is the wrong approach and futile in the long run.

Some of the best run companies reward for work accomplished, innovation and goals met, while also providing for recreation and play as a counter balance.

Maybe you can back that up with facts. You also need to figure the cost of having people uninstalling the software from PC's and policing it. I'm not defending games, just saying there should be more important things for a gov to focus on.
I wonder how many millions can be saved charging people for their smoking breaks or restricting their use of the toilets to one visit a day!
charge them for using more then 4 squares!
removing MS games is a script that takes 10 minutes to write and 2 years to run
