upwithbiofuels wrote: <quoted text> Listen Dupont has invested 140 million in cellulosic ethanol. Who has done more research you or Dupont? I don't need to do a little research I would bet Dupont did a lot of research before they invested $140 million. Shell has invested a lot. Maybe you should quit research biofuels at petroleum websites. I'm not going to complain how you just don't get it, I think you're kind of cute. You seemed to think that 140 million is a lot for research. While to the average person that is a lot of money it isn't compared to what companies have been spending on research. If you want a real eye opener look at what car companies spend on concept cars that will never ever see the showroom. Or better yet what drug companies spend on researching new drugs. The truth is that at best guess they are hoping to have the first planet opened in 2011 (Popular Mechanics Sept 2008 pg 60.) Even then it depends on softwoods. If that mass of forest waste is a hard wood like oak then it will still be unfit for what your talking about. Part of the problem is you think every twig is created equal. You also have to keep in mind that for the amounts that are needed that you would strip every tropical rain forest on those planet.

Listen America, all of your arguments against ethanol can be repudiated by the simple fact that it has already been done in Brazil. They are nearly energy independent. We can do this. Get on the bandwagon. Write your congressman. We shouldn't have to depend on oil from the middle east and Venezuela. We can keep all of those dollars here if we start getting more ethanol on the market and buying it. The more we buy of it the less oil we'll need from the middle east.

Ethanol from corn is the stupidest idea yet. How much are you willing to pay for food? Brazil uses sugar cane for ethanol, which is much more efficient. It takes more energy to extract ethanol from corn than sugar. Battery technology for autos and nuclear/solar/wind is the way of the future.

The only reason you want to believe I work for Exxon is that is the only way to make yourself feel better after reading my posts. Noticed that all they have is a groundbreaking/construction from 2007. They haven't produced anything yet and right now there is questions on if they will ever get it built. Or as my boss tends to put it "It's a scammers money trap".

Battery technology for autos and nuclear/solar/wind is the way of the future. AND oil. Our entire way of life is built around petroleum products and that wont change for 100yrs, like it or not.

The problem in both cases is secondaries. Both have driven the cost of food up, they are also having a negitive enviromental impact. The only reason Brazil is still in business is because the people with the money can override the enviromental movement.

The problem with battery for auto is they haven't invented a practical battery for it yet. So far they have been piggybacking on laptop battery research but until they can produce something that is more than a communiter's car they are not going to get to far. Most people cannnot afford to have such a expensive car as a second car.

Do you actually believe that by converting just 20% of only one crop (corn) is driving up the price of all food....all food????????Lets go over that and I forgot to mention something... do you believe that just 20% of only one crop in the United States ONLY is driving up the price of ALL...ALL FOOD worldwide? The math just isn't there... The reason the price of food is going up is mainly because the price of FOSSIL FUELS is going up.

The math just isn't there... The reason the price of food is going up is mainly because the price of FOSSIL FUELS is going up. I believe in the facts and the fact is that yes, it is. Not only is it driving up the cost of food but other items like clothes. How you ask, if the price of corn rises then more farmers are going to plant more corn in fields that they were going to plant cotton. Now there is less cotton. The demand didn't go away and the supply is less. The same money overall is spent on buying the crop but it brought less. Same goes for things like wheat and soybeans. Also corn is used in other things as a sweetner. So the price of your snikers bar just went up because the price of corn went up. On top of it all the ethonal is more expensive than the MBTE it replaced. So the price of gas goes up as well. You also managed to miss the enviromental damage from fields that would of laid fallow are instead being planted in corn. Or in the case of Brazil cutting down jungle to raise sugar beets. In a nut shell the prices have gone up not only becase it cost more to get the food to market but now there is less food getting to market in the first place. So while your dreaming of taking branches and making into gas your going to have to wake up and face reality.

Let me put it to you this way. A good ol' American parade is about to start. It will be a parade of PEOPLE backing BIOFUELS and we'll start marching down mainstreet smiling, beating drums and we'll be throwing candy to all of you naysayers and antagonists on the side of the street watching us. You'll still be screaming and raising your clinched fists but it will be too late because the rest of us are going to save this country from the strangle hold that FOSSIL FUELS have on this country and the world. None of your propaganda is going to stop us nor will it anger us because this parade is not only going to save the country but its going to make Americans happy once again.

I live in ethanol land - Wisconsin. Fantasy is best left to Disney. The I want free energy ding bats also want people to burn food - corn. Free trade. Bring a tanker in full of oil, send it back full of corn.

I don't want free energy, what I want is for this country to be free of the stranglehold OPEC and BIG OIL have on the American economy....haven't you noticed....people are losing their jobs...because of BIG OIL and your love for it. Americans need to unite and promote biofuels. We can free ourselves from OPEC if you people would quit supporting OPEC.

"people are losing their jobs...because of BIG OIL and your love for it" Apparently you don't choose to not remember the eras of prosperity "because of BIG OIL and your love for it" Yeah, yeah we know big oil, blah blah. AGW crisis demands blah blah blah.

AGW crisis demands blah blah blah. Our country is presently being robbed by Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Iran etc. There are more dollars leaving this country to buy FOSSIL FUELS than ever before. Our country was already in a crisis because of trade balance deficits, record debts by citizens and the country, mortgage-foreclosure crisis, etc. We won't be able to survive if we continue to standby and do nothing as all these dollars go to the middle east. You republicans can remain republicans all want for all I care but as for this country's energy policy you need to stand up and be counted to support everything it takes to stop the dollars going to the middle east. If you feel we must drill off the coast then lets do it but we must support the BIOFUEL industry because FOSSIL FUELS are finite they aren't renewable and obviously BIG OIL can't provide what we need or they would already be doing it. As T. Boone Pickens says, and he is a republican as a matter of fact he spent millions to keep John Kerry out of office, he says we're relying more and more on the middle east for our oil as time goes by. He calls it the greatest transfer of wealth in history and as you know money means power so if we keep it up Saudi Arabia and Iran will be the most powerful countries on earth in just a decade or two. Anything you say to argue against BIOFUELS can be disputed by the simple fact that Brazil has already become energy independent.

T Boone Pickens is like P T Barnum, he recongnized that fools exist and that they are the easiest to seperate from thier money. The other part that you haven't figured out is that a sustainable source of biofuels hasn't been found. They thought they found it with corn and sugar beets but all they found was empty bellys riding around with full gas tanks. Then you have all these wonderful ideas that haven't been thought out. Like using the same stuff that has been used for cattle feed or ideas that involve technology that they promise that will be ready in a few years. Of course that is if they can stick to the schedule and come in under budget. Which is as likely as a military weapon system coming in under budget and on time.

Boone Picken's opinion you might know that Pickens supports drilling for oil everywhere it can be found. Offshore, shale oil in the West, and in places like ANWR.
