CNN to offer a glimpse of black life in America

As the world's window on the United States, CNN is offering its second documentary on black life in the republic, just as Barack Obama heads off to Europe and the Middle East, with the three network anchors in ...

Well.I think that the CNN project has to raise a few eyebrows... almost inevitably... and I probably would tend to agree with the skepticism here with regard to Parson's tone. But there's no need to report that he is 'sliming' the fight for parity here. If there's a disagreement, then good. There is something suspect about the enthusiasm of 'post-blackness'--especially in the case of those who profit from it. But the issue is viable enough that it seems that avoiding these more insulting, and ultimately obscuring, terms would be for the best. Writing that Parsons 'might note' your point of view seems a bit odd and rhetorically excessive, for further example.

Best regards,

If your parents are white and they had a conversation with their child of "color" about cowering when approached by police in America--GOOD FOR YOU. For years I have wondered when this was going to be revealed to the world. Blacks live a different "reality" in the USA than Whites.

Just maybe the truth will start to be told about the corrupt system that is designed to destroy the black american's families and keep them forever destitute and desolate. Hopefully, the light not only will now be shined on the prison industrial complex but also on the military industrial complex that is systematically looting the national treasury dry at the expense of education, jobs, healthcare depended upon by inner city blacks. Hopefully, the light will also be shone on many racists currently serving as judges, senators, county commissioner, DAs, etc that are churning out and enforcing racist and oppressive laws that are disproportionally affecting blacks than any other group in the nation.

Hi Mr. Payne,
I'm a white American villain; thought you should know that up front. Please keep that in mind if I accidentally write something stupid or evil. After all, I'm part of a 200 plus million member monilith that thinks and acts as one.
Anyway, I was wondering how Soledad O'Brien was able to report on what conversations my mother, a white person, had with me when I was a child. I don't remember seeing her in my house.
And I'm not sure how she knows what conversations I've had with my own children, who also happen to be white. Why are you allowed to engage in stereotypes, generalizations and profiling of whites? Why do both you and Newsday call such bile journalism?
If I had a public persona and engaged in the same practices toward black people, wouldn't both you and Newsday write me off as a racist crackpot?
Thank You,
Mike C

"CNN is offering its second documentary on black life in the republic".
News Flash; we have not been a Republic since the commencement of the Income Tax.
This so-called columnist is a Race-baiter; this so-called columnist feeds off of the past and injects it into the present and future. It is people like Mr. Payne that is keeping that racial rift spreading further and further apart.

When Tiger Woods won the Masters golf tournement Fuzzy Zeller said they would serve collard greens and fried chicken at the awards dinner. As a consequence he was branded a racist and he lost his endorsement deals.
Yesterday Padraig Harrington won the British Open. The talking head on television said that he would probably drink Irish Whiskey out of the Claret Jug that is traditionally awarded to the winner.
No outcry, no incriminations, no firings, nothing. The silence highlights the reverse racism that we experience under the old model of victimization and focusing on age old grievances.
More Pain paints all Whites with the same brush. This is exactly what he is complaining about in reverse.
He is a racist, a hypocrite and a biased journalist.

As an African-American I have never felt that CNN has shown itself to be any less racially biased than the rest of main-stream media- last time I checked we have not yet received reparations for almost 300 years of free labor under slavery, nor have we been compensated for the post-slavery crimes against humanity committed against us as a people. Neither CNN or any other media outlet advocates that brand of capitalistic justice. There have always been race-traitors among African-Americans, uncle Toms we used to call them, that minimized the suffering of a people based on race that has been our lot in America since 1619. Justice Thomas, Armstrong Williams, Roy Innis and countless clerics and politicians and others come to mind. Many have figured out that there's money to be had by attacking one's own own people in this society- the concept is hardly new. Interestingly though, I don't read or see the same sort of criticisms directed at Jewish-Americans who actually received reparations for just a decade of slave labor in Nazi Germany almost 70 years ago. These folks were ably assisted by a high-level delegation sent by President Bill Clinton. You may have heard of him, or his wife... There's nothing "post-racial" about the discrimination African-Americans face daily in educational opportunities, in hiring, in housing acquisition, in health-care delivery, and from police terror, and on and on. It's not "playing victim" to say so; it's called telling the hard truth. Incidentally, the candidacy of Barack Obama of the good fortune of a Governor Paterson change this reality not at all.

As always, I will defend in any way I can the views of our Pulitzer Prize winning journalist. Because he is a fellow American, because he is a fellow Long Islander and mostly because he embarasses me how well he puts words together. For all the above, you mess with him, you mess with me!

Having said that, and speaking from ignorance on the point of view, it seems as though the opinion piece is a pessimistic (but possibly realistic) view of how 11% of the population views the 89%. In fact, a quick read of the article seems to say that only Black Americans support Obama, when polls show a majority of Americans could give a darn about his skin color and will cast their ballot in his direction. They sure are throwing money at him!

Although it does seem as though there are more publicized police incidents where blacks are killed or injured, I look on the entire police approach from a personal historical perspective. When I was first driving, the police were considered the final word. They didn't have to worry about a lawyer twisting speeding facts -- in fact "reckless driving" was more common an offense because it relied on the judgement of the officer. I would routinely open my door and go sit in the passenger seat of the patrol car as a sign of respect. Now, any person of any color or age who tries to exit a stopped vehicle will get a stern warning from the loudspeaker and a frightening command if he is not immediately behaved. So, yes, with the attitude of all youngsters today, although I would not use the word "cower", a kid of any flavor is lectured to show respect for the police or suffer the consequenses. And, of course, a speeding ticket is not on the same planet as a squad of scared detectives pointing guns at a guy pulling out a cell phone.

But Les's point is that white folks don't understand the anger inside of a portion of our population. Frankly, I am surprised but in a way pleased -- If whites did understand and did not cure the problem, I would be angry too.

"I checked we have not yet received reparations for almost 300 years of free labor under slavery,"

You were a slave in the USA Mr. Mays?
If so, you should receive compensation from the person who held you, if he still is alive.
All my grandparents came over after the civil war, so why should I pay reparations? What about people whose ancestors gave their life to end it, should they get something or have to give?
What are the "post slavery crimes against humanity" you have suffered from?
You Mays are a pathetic jerk. A loser.

Blanket statements geared toward either race is utterly wrong, and an injustice to efforts of uniting the country, however I truly believe that there are alot more "Black" people than you realize who are trying to "EARN IT" as you so eloquently put it. Unfortunately you seem to overlook what Obama has EARNED as the better candidate by again playing into the racial divide. McCain is out of his league (please spare me the experience talk, because experience at failure is worse than no experience, and history has taught us that revolutionaries have a better impact on this world, than those who simply regurgitate their "experiences"). If Barack was white there may not be as many obstacles, but to think that any "liberal" candidate has it easy is a farce. Truly the "appointed" governor of New York was placed in his situation (although I am not claiming any knowledge of) I tend to think he has earned his way to that seat by some means.

Truthfully, however there is a different experience in some sector's of society based on race.

I cannot speak of injustice from the police, becuase I don't have any experiences which have led me to believe I was treated some way particularly because of race, however I can speak to the fact that I have been overlooked for employment, pigeonholed by would be business associates, and treated differently during employment based on my race.(I know this becuase I was even told on many occasions including one where the CEO of the company I worked for previously said it is harder for him to trust/hire a black man and let him run a portion of the business even though he may be more qualified, and even though he may have proved himself more within the organization)

I have seen qualified, HARD WORKING, smarter individuals dismissed from positions based on race only, and yes there were some that remained "for fear of discrimination suits" but I truly believe that talent, drive, intelligence, true SUCCESS & RESULTS should be the only factors in consideration for any positin, promotion, etc.

One last note: I loathe the term African-American. It propagates a sense that as a "black" person we are not wholly American. Every single person in the United States is the result of immigration (one way or the other) unless you are a full-blooded native american. So unless we call our "white/caucasian" brethren Euro-American or European-American, then let's do away with all the other hypenated American terms including Hispanic-American, Asian-American, etc.

Justice For All -- I have never seen anyone that I have worked with dismissed or passed over because of race, but I sure have more times than I can count seen it because of age discrimination!

And I see virtually every "comedian" and talk show host openly trying to prejudice an electorate against Senator McCain because of his age. So if we are going to open dialogs on prejudice, let's open two!

Perhaps, Les, we should fire all the white officers and hire some of the police used by Mugabe's government. In reality, there are many black police officers in our country, many decent white and black officers, and probably af few both white and black who shouldn't be officers. Overall, there are also white and black criminals too. On balance, it is not as racist as the media wants to portray it. We live in an imperfect world to begin with, and America is not as bad as you guys like to believe. But then again, liberals have trouble thinking.

I could not have said it better, 100% in agreement.
Great post, Thank you for your insightful comments. Some hate to hear the truth, downplaying racism as if it dosen't ezist. Go to any topic on these discussion boards and it shows bigotry and racism is very much alive and well.

Agree. It's unfortunate that we live in a society that tends to keep it's citizens in a box and other citizens think they are the only ones who are "hard working" and pay taxes. That mantra trancends all segments of society and not the sole territory of one group just as crime crosses all socio / economic lines, but some want to place it on one group with generalizations etc.
This documentary should prove interesting.

All this ranting and raving has gone on for a long time.

Yet we,that is all America, are on the verge of having an African American President.

He can only get elected if the majority, not the electoral college with standing, vote for him.

what does that tell us about all the Racism being expressed here?

Tells me,many should get over it.

On the VIEW,that Witch's show,it took a white girl to reject the "N" word as used by Black people to themselves.
A Reverend, talking like some slave owner about a brother, who are the Racists?
That white girl in tears because her black co hosts using the "N" word on national TV,or the leader of black people ,resorting to the worst word thats offensive to blacks.

Barrack will I hope resolve this. His own "STUFF" with his minster is a factor yet! While I won't vote for him,he his history in the making.I would however vote for Gen.Powell in a flash. My kind of politics.Nothing to do with color, more to do wih honesty, and character.. By the way CNN is a rag! A subject that just perpetuates Race in a negative way!
