Obama takes a place in history

Let's not confuse the importance of the symbolism of Obama's candidacy with his actual ability to lead and govern.

I remember feeling a similar sense of achievement and self-congratulation as a college student in New York City when David Dinkins was elected Mayor. Quite a few of us felt that this election validated our own own progressive values by finally electing a black Mayor. We thought to ourselves, "My look how far we've come." Sound familiar?

Hoever, Mayor Dinkins actual record as mayor was not very good. In fact, he managed to be such a poor manager that he paved the way for a solidly Democratic city to elect Republican Rudy Giuliani to two terms of office.

I can't shake the feeling that a President Obama will make President Carter appear like Bismarck.

This is not to suggest that McCain is without faults. I acknowledge that he has quite a few.

What I am saying, however, is let's not get caught up with the symbolism over substance. For all of his talk of "change" Obama voted for the corrupt Agricultural Bill that President Bush signed and John McCain opposed. When it comes to federal spending John McCain has voted against business as usual while Senator Obama voted for the status quo.

Mouthing platitudes shouldn't be confused with a demonstrable record of accomplishment.

Imagine Obama as president with Pelosi leading the House and Reid leading the Senate. Would Obama be the "bipartisan" type of leader that he tries to project himself as during his presidential campaign? Or would he be the leftist extremist that his short history in government has proven him to be? Does America really want the results of a government led by the combination of Obama, Pelosi, and Reid?

I found his speech uplifting,honest,tactful and refreshing.

What astounds me is the fact people have no faith in America or themselves to enact the change in government he proposes.
Is it laziness or greed ..but it saddens me to think we have become a nation of defeatists.

Allowing big business and big government to lead us into oblivion.

Isn't part of religious doctrine to have FAITH?
We are lost in that area.
We would rather continue not knowing our neighbors..than take a chance on becoming a proud nation once again!

YOu would rather stay the course that we have been on for 8 years?
Rather than take a leap of faith and maybe we can fix what is wrong?

We are just barely surviving a GOP government run by Bush, Cheney, and Rove (etal). The only place left to go when you hit rock bottom with the GOP is up. GObama!!!!

I think McCain looks like a great alternative... to Bush!

I don't agree with Obama's stance on everything, but overall, he's just a far better option.

In the long run, I'm just glad that it looks like there will be some changes whoever gets in. I just hope they deliver much of what they promise.

Geraldine Ferraro had it right. Any white man who had the thin resume and lack of experience that Obama has would be laughed at as a Presidential candidate. In reality, what we have in Obama is our first Affirmative Action presidential candidate.
