Ok so I can't use the documentation that my faith is based on to prove my faith? Kind of handy caps me a bit.

Your claim is simply untrue.

The story of the biblical flood has been clearly demonstrated to come from Sumerian mythology - from Mesopotamia, "the land between two rivers." The people of Mesopotamia relied on floods to fertilize their land. Hence, their religion was intimately connected to flooding.

Likewise, the OT "tooth for a tooth" etc., came from Mesopotamia.

Your religion is just one of many - and, in the above cases, is the product of cultural diffusion.

Doesn't your faith come from your personal experiences?

Your word is enough for me to prove your faith. Yes, you have faith.

But I'm a little worried about your faith. Why does it require the world to be a certain way? In other words, why do you need to limit the world to being exactly as described by the Bible, despite that science demonstrates the Bible is not accurate?

For me, that's not a lot of faith. I mean, if I believed in God, it wouldn't really bother me, whatever the world was like. I'd just add that to the mystery. By forcefitting the world to your image of God, to me, that suggests you've got a very defined, limited image of God. And I don't really get that if you call Him all powerful, etc.

I recon when Athiests an Minorities ain't at hand these kind just can't controll thier tendancies an it gets em in hot water with fellow believers Who then have to deny 'em.

Well, to be fair, they don't have to ignore their beliefs if they are christian. The bible permits horrible acts, as long as they are done in "god's name" so to speak. Many of the zealots don't have a problem ignoring parts of the bible, they just don't want to ignore the ones that allow them to hate a minority group until the law forces them to because they actually do hate minority groups.

No, only the christians have a world wide flood myth, others have flooding of basins and valleys, and those have actual geological evidence to support them, though they did tell the story of it in myth they can actually assert that their small floods happened. Small floods are common, so meh. not hard to believe anyway. A world wide flood is impossible in so many ways, time, space, and even the dimensions of the universe would have to abruptly be altered, then restored after several million years, ye even then, the logistics of having the diversity of life we see today after that goes beyond impossible. This is the real world now, we only accept information that is beneficial to us as fact, so since the world wide flood is impossible, it being true cannot benefit us, ergo, even if it did happen and somehow no evidence was left, it would still be a useless story because anything that requires "god magic" is useless to us mere mortals.

Your bible cannot prove your beliefs unless it is unmistakably the writings of a god. To do that, it would need to be free of error, contain high quality scientific knowledge not available at the time, and/or make high quality prophecies. These are defined as specific, detailed, unambiguous predictions which specify the time and place; which predicts something surprising, unlikely or unique that could not have been contrived and was not self-fulfilling; and which were fulfilled completely unaccompanied by failed prophecies.

But your book can disprove itself by claiming that it was authored by and describes a perfect god, then contain errors and self-contradictions, which is the case.

The printing press and literacy were your first problem. And the Internet is just your most recent. How long do you think that your church can survive this much information being disseminated this widely, Every one of these uses the bible to disprove itself :

No, "it" has NOT been told any other cultures, except the Sumerian, which is where the myth originated. The "other stories" you refer to are other tales of floods...stories which just happen to be told in areas were floods happen a lot. Imagine that.

You can pull all the apologetics out of your azz you want to, but it still comes down to the fact that there is NO geological evidence to support your story. There is a great deal of scientific evidence that says it never happened.

There is something to it--it's a powerful tale that resonates in our emotional makeup. If the Lord of the Rings had been written long enough ago that its origin as a work of fiction had been forgotten, there would still be people expecting Gandalf to return to once again defeat evil and restore a true king.

We've always been suckers for a good story. But some of us can tell the difference between fiction and reality.

It would also take a higher moral position than humans conceive of - yet never does.

A loving, all perfect deity would surely include, in Its most important commandants, the perfect moral code. Yet no religious text anywhere supplies this. Maybe Jainism comes closest.

Even Jesus's Golden rule is marred by his "the poor will always be among you" and such comments. Surely the Creator of the Universe would understand that poverty is a function of social hierarchies and limited resources? Yet where is the outlined plan of a coherent, freedom making economic system that grants everyone equal access to happiness?

I firmly disagree that flood myths - especially since KJV said "the Flood" not flood myths - are present in most cultures. It certainly isn't present in Asian religions which to this day make up the majority of believers on the planet - and, prior to the 1400's, you'd have to include all the American cultures and their lack of flood myths.

To return to the original point of the thread, I'd argue that (American) atheists are in the closet because the statement "I am an atheist" is a claim that "your religion has been dismissed by me." It angers religious people as it threatens their fictive kinship bonds that create their solidarity.

Well,*if* you can show that your documentation is reliable, then you can use it. Otherwise, you cannot. So, can you prove that your Bible is reliable without using the Bible to prove itself?

Daily Horoscope for May 22

Aries

Keep a firm grip on your money today to avoid anyone else getting their mitts on it. If you're out in public you should keep your wallet or bag clamped to your side, just in case it goes walkabout. You should also make sure you check any bills and invoices that you're given, in case they contain a mistake. It's a day when errors and deceptions are highly likely.
