True, but this time period was an exception due to the hot issue of slavery. Whigs went away an were replaced by the Republicans. The reason I think we will only have two parties (by any name) is because governing comes down to one philosphy that is what is the role of the federal government. One party will always claim the federal gov't should be more involved in peoples' lives while the other party says the feds should stay out. We will always agrue over this very question in this country. Independents won't work because, well, they are too independent. They are both on the left and the right and do not have a unitifying philosphy to keep them a viable party.
Seems to me we didn't used to be so concerned with unification or trying to please everyone at every level. we were more concerned with upholding the spirit and intent of our Constitution, according the our forefathers---the people who WROTE it.

We'll soon be in another World War, or a Revolution. It will then become crystal clear "what to do"....

Ah, the ignorant communist-socialist LIAR tries to save what little is left of their moronic argument. An argumnt BTW, which has been thoroughly REFUTED by the FACTS previously on this thread:

Up to your usual inability to read what your percieved enemy was posting about I see... There is no point in debating you - I think you're probably drunk? maybe... At any rate inbred one, I was not talking about/debating who donates more at any point in my posts. Way to go! You failed to percieve what was really going on again, as usual.

Kit, a third party vote is always a throw-away vote, even when done for honorable reasons. It will always be a throw away vote in my opinion because we will never see a viable third party, left or right.
You are the reason nothing changes.

That kind of defeatist attitude is why we always have to choose the lesser of two evils.

The Libertarian Party is most definitely a viable Third party and has been growing in numbers every year. Once people realize that what we believe is almost always CLOSE to what they believe they stop believing the 1980's propaganda that LIbertarians are the Party of Potheads. Go look at www.lp.org and tell me you believe there is anything but the Best for America that we represent.....

The Libertarian Party is a United States political party founded on December 11, 1971. It is currently the largest third party in the United States, claiming more than 200,000 registered voters and more than 600 people in public office, including mayors, county executives, county-council members, school-board members and other local officials. It has more people in office than all other third parties combined.

But this is EXACTLY why a party like the Libertarians does so well because it combines the very BEST of the Left and Right in a way that is best for the Individuals who live in the US and the US as a whole.

Good point, James. I also like the point of the party being CLOSE to what people believe. I don't think it's realistic to think any of us will find a party that is 100% exactly the way we would like to see things done. But these 3rd options seem to be so much more "in tune" with the will of the people than the major 2 do!

I'm not being a defeatist, just a realist. Because their views are so diverse they will never team up. One's view of freedom (let business florish without controls) is contra to the other's view (no regulation of personal behavior).

I totally disagree with this. What is the basis for your statement? I mean, how is this any more true for the 3nd party voters than it might be for the major 2, for example? It's sad that anyone would choose candidate with such tunnel vision but I'm sure it DOES happen. Some people feel so passionately about one particular issue that it's all they see or focus on.

I'm very passionate about the murder of babies, for example, and that issue IS very important to me. I cannot vote for anyone who supports it; however, I also look at where a person stands on the other major issues, as well---things like foreign policy, enforcement of our immgration laws, limiting federal involvement in state and personal affairs, etc. I try to base my decision and my vote on the candidate who most CLOSELY represents my beliefs and thoughts about these things. And I don't see it in either Obama or McCain.
