Of course the President is commander in chief over the military Welsey. Obama's problem is that he was against the Surge, using his own inner circle for advice instead of Generals and was wrong. Obama would be dumber than even I think he is if he were to ignore the Generals advice. BTW, why hasn't Chairman Obama called any of the Generals in front of his Senate Sub-Committee? I think we all know the answer is basically because he would know where to start, what to ask and would look like Dukakis riding in that tank w/oversized helmet.

Westly Clark, wasn't he in charge of supply? He could not lead in battle a group of girl scouts.

There is a reason America has failed to win conflicts since WWII. The military career generals are incompetent. It is only when the whole of america, and the best minds are allowed to lead (due to our very existence being on the line) does america shine. It is also why Israel seems so much more competent than the USA. For Israel, it is an all out effort, and not left to military career people. Just listen to Clark ... he is a fool.

What a crock of shyte. We've got the most political general since Al Haig making these comments. A general playing world politics during the NATO action in Bosnia .Hugh Shelton replaced him as NATO commander because of his foulups. As to Obama he made up his mind two years ago strictly to get political attention and the current reality in Iraq has nothing to do with his plan. Instead of fixing what he claims is Bush's FU in Iraq , he wants to basically abandon Iraq and swan off to landlocked Afganistan. While Afganistans real problems are created in Pakistan and now more recently Iran. He's is about as arrogant as was Rummy. Another civilian in-charge who FU'd a military operation in Iraq. Obama is dissing Petraeus's advice and concerns just like Rummy did Shenseki's and Whites. If you think Iraq can be a 100 year war you ain't seen nothing yet. Afganistan is a trap and Pakistan is the trap door. Where does out current strategic interest really lie ? In a landlocked SW Asian country that is stuck in 1850s life style or in a comparably developed Iraq in the middle of the world's life blood and in the region of the Arab Wahabbists. OBTW , I believe the change in the Iraq situation brought on the Jihaddist and Iranian changing their focal point to A-stan as the SURGE kicked their butts and changed Iraqi attitudes. Now Obama without recognizing the success of the Iraqi Surge wants to move on to his own surge in A-stan. A-stan is as strategically important as Tibet . Let Russia and China worry about it. Yes , I feel very sorry for the average Afgan especially the women. But do we want another humanitarian war as was Somolia and maybe Darfur in our future. A-stan is the REAL 100 year war.Pakistan is the key.

He was supreme leader until he gave the commands to send coalition troops to stop regular Russian troops from landing and taking an air base. Thanks god smarter and cooler heads prevailed from his Euro counterpart so his dubious orders were ignored and Wesley quietly moved into retirement. http://www.hackworth.com/9aug99.html

I'm glad someone reminded fools that it's the generals job to take orders from the President and not the other way around. The general is a trained fighter and not a trained strategist. That would be as stupid as someone owning their company and the employees setting the agenda and direction of the company. If your job is to type you type, if your job is to supervise you supervise and if you are the president you are the commander and chief

Military minds often suffer from narrowness. I certainly don't want a president who leaves crucial decisions to the military. A competent president will of course solicit a general's views (as well as those of other advisors) as input, then utilize his own best judgement as to how to proceed. That's what a president is elected to do.

Obama never solicited any advice except from his political handlers, Daily Kos and MOVEON for his 16 month time table. Remember he just restated it BEFORE he left for the ME fact finding tour.

Friends you can Trust me, McCain: When McCain returned to the United States in 1973 after more than five years as a prisoner of war, he found his wife was a different person. Carol McCain, once a model, had been badly injured in a car wreck in 1969. The accident "left her 4 inches shorter and on crutches, and she gained a good deal of weight." Despite her injures, she had refused to allow her POW husband to be notified about her condition, fearing that such news would not be good for him while he was being held prisoner. But, just a couple years later, McCain, while pondering a future in politics, met Cindy Hensley, an attractive 25-year-old woman from a very wealthy politically-connected Arizona family. While still married to Carol, McCain began an adulterous relationship with Cindy. He married Cindy in May 1980 -- just a month after dumping his crippled wife and securing a divorce.

Do you honestly think President Bush would have nominated a general whose ideas/strategies conflicted with his administration? Unfortunately, generals are politicans too which destroys objectivity. Senator Obama should not do activities to impress rather to inform like meeting leaders of States. To be strong of defense is not spending monies on weapons it is putting the military in positions where you do have to make the call to go to war. President Bush or republicans never understood that - perhaps, Senator Obama is elected - would.
