<quoted text>You make an interesting point. But I don't know if the survivalist can really be considered a cultural thing though since it tends to show up the same way from culture to culture. Do you know what I mean? I think that's the strange and interesting part.
It manifests as if it is more basic, more inherent to human nature. As if they simply are not as evolved perhaps? Or as socially capable? On the bad days (where I suffered one too many fools) I am aware I have enough of a strange recluse streak in me that I can actually relate. The difference is I don't indulge it. I am unwilling to pay the price of what I would have to give up to do so.
I FULLY hear what you are saying - there are those base instincts....kinda like that "maternal lioness" quality, where you can actually envision ripping someone's head right off if they went after your (or any) child.

I do find that I like to seclude myself more and more as I'm getting older. I, like you, actually have to force myself to be social often times, now.

By the time the weekend rolls around, I'm so exhausted from work all week that I relish the quiet and rest.

Besides, the conversations that I have on Topix, most often, are smarter and more fun and interesting than what I'll find locally, if I go out to a bar with friends, etc.

Especially during football season and baseball playoffs!

I guess I just failed to see the relevance of the point you were trying to make. I think our Congress shows that parties don't always stick together, so I was just wondering!
OK - cool.

Actually, I had written that in response to another's post so I could see where it may have been hard to follow - especially considering how fast the damn thread was moving last night.

As you can see, I am still catching up!

:)

It IS possible to debate these things without everyone getting nasty...its, perhaps, damn near impossible, but I DO think it IS possible.

In the end, we all want what's best for the country - we all want more stability and to regain our respect, world wide.

I think when it gets heated, its good to remind ourselves of that - I know I have to do it A LOT!

Are you blond?? That just went right over your head!! It was abad publicity stunt!!! You know hockey mom at a hockey game! And it backfired. But the sad bad part is that she thrust her children into this stunt. This is a bad thing Palin is doing--using her children. Even Bush did not use his children for his run to the White House and neither did Bill CLinton nor did John Kennedy!! That in itself is in poor taste and bad judgement!!
Awesome!

Have you ever considered the idea that your "god" put these problems on us because IT doesn't agree with us?
If you believe in a "god", how did you ever come to the conclusion he was on our side over every other country on the Earth?
Oh nevermind, I forgot that a belief in "god" pretty much forces you to suspend logic and rational thought.
To answer your questions:

1) I believe in a God who has allowed us humans "free will." He doesn't "put" these problems on us, we do that to ourselves.

2) I don't, nor did I say, he was on our country's side. My God is the Creator of the earth, so therefore, this would cover our entire globe -- not just "Us."

3) I don't have to suspend "logic" when I observe the rising of the sun and the exact proximity of it from Earth so as not to burn Earth up or freeze it, the complexity of DNA, the birth of another human being...to know that we must have had a Designer.

Case In Point: When I observe a simple watch someone is wearing, I assume it just didn't make itself. I know (although never actually observing the maker of that watch) that the watch had a Designer. How much more so would I come to the conclusion of a God (Designer) who created such a beautiful planet, people, animals, sunshine, stars, oceans, snow...

You, on the other hand, seems illogical and irrational in your thinking.

Just another example of how those who do not choose city or suburb living are disconnected, in a way, from the mainstream societies that fill this country. The thought of black man being president is appalling, I might imagine, and I find THAT appalling.
Even though I am in a blue state, when one drives out to the rural, northwest corners of CT, there is the same attitude.
Not to mention Greenwich, et al - its interesting to me how, often times, people assume that if one has money, then they are a republican.
Are you calling country people racists?
What an assumption.
Back to the original article: I read it, and found the headline ridiculous. If the family wanted a state trooper who threatened the life of their father out of his office, who can blame them? ANYONE would've done the same thing. And he wasn't a sterling example of state trooper. He had booze in his police car, misused a taser, and threatened someone's life.
None of that means much, to me. This constant rethinking of what people did is an absurd waste of time and money, unless laws were broken. And they were not.

Exactly. Abuse of powers to get a guy fired doesn't actually seem like a rare thing. Probably happens all the time in politics. But showing the poor judgement to have Todd be her henchman, that's the kicker.
A private citizen making calls to a state official to basically intimidate him on behalf of his wife, the Governor? Wow.
NO it proves that she lied and she used her office to punish more than just her ex-bil.

Read the full report on the so-called abuse and you'll understand that she was accused of "not reining in her husband" while he questioned others about the firing of the state trooper. She wasn't accused of doing that herself. Now let's talk about past illegal as well as other abuses such as...use of cocaine and other drugs (very illegal BTW) and affiliations with others who have questionable and dubious backgrounds. I am actually an Independent who has not made up my mind and the stupidity of some of the comments that Obama supporters keep making do not help the cause any. Some of us undecideds are looking at reactions of the supporters to help glean some sense of personal responsibility and trutfulness. When there is constant personal criticism that sway from the issues of economy and national security it turns us off. It almost makes Ralph Nader a viable choice.
So have you went to factcheck.org and checked out Obama's relationship or lack of with Ayers or rezko? Please do. Have you looked into the Alaskan Liberation Party. Please do!! Check into Joe Vogler.

That said--how about if you and I and everyone else concentrate on the issues at hand. Like the economy. McCain has called himself the fundamental deregulator. But now he says our financail problem is caused by not enough regulations. Health care--McCain wants to tax my health care premiums through work. My employer and I pay $3960 a year for my health care. He's gonna add that to my income each year and tax me on it. McCain will in turn give me a credit of $2500 a year that will go to the insurance company. Looks like I lose! I don't like that. I say leave my health care alone. Which is what Obama will do. If I have health care, which I do, he won't touch it! i like that.

McCain wil make the Bush big business tax cuts permanent--we really can't afford that!!

Palin was found to have abused her power as governor and that, the report states, is unethical.

Many of our past and present presidents have used drugs--the important thing to know is if they STOPPED!!

Well, all I can say is that for there to be a centered, gray area, there have to be extremes and, clearly, both sides have them.

I think that for those who are in your position, you just have to make a prioritized list of your issues of concern and fact check both candidates, and their running mates, and see who represents your views and choices the most.

Just a suggestion - they are so diametrically opposed on so many issues that the answer should, eventually, seem very clear to you, I would imagine.

No one has proven the trooper threatened anyone. Even the divorce judge warned them against trying to get Wooten fired. A friend of Palins in politics told her she better back away from the Wooten situation--it was not a good thing. She didn't listen. The ethics laws of Alaska were broken. Todd did most of his campaigning against Wooten in the governors office. He had a special table set up with a phone just for that purpose. He used the governors staff--state employees-to pursue his vendetta!! Palin only had to say stop this!!

Wooten was suspended for his actions! He was reprimanded.
