Workers rescued after dangling from high-rise for 45 minutes
Michael Byrne grasped the ankle of a repairman dangling in space outside his ninth-floor condo, holding on with all his might and hoping the man wouldn't plummet to his death. His arm eventually got tired, so Byrne leaned out the window and let the man's feet rest on his shoulder. "Holding a 160-pound person on your shoulder gets tiring," Byrne said later.
On cable TV news channels, viewers across the United States saw a daring rescue operation unfold in real time Wednesday after a scaffold collapsed at a Fort Lauderdale high-rise and two workmen were left dangling more than 100 feet above the ground in their safety harnesses.

Great. I just signed up for the Economist Magazine. My first issue will arrive in no more than 60 days. |

The first question should have been let me see your green card-no card , cut the rope and watch them splatter on the ground. That would save us alot of time and money latter on, no one would care that is for sure!!!

"Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue dispatched a ladder truck...."
They only have one, The other two have been out for repairs for the last 5 months. |

Only took 6 posts to get 'South Florida' on them. Florida, The No Compassion State. HYSTERICAL... |

This shows there is something missing. The workers wanted someone to call their boss, NOT 911! Did they think their boss would get them down?
On the positive side however, they were each practicing good safety. Each was wearing their safety harness, and obviously had a good safety line system. If not, this would have been an entirely different story written. There have been 46 fatal accidents within the South Florida area with a total of 49 workers killed in those accidents. Thankfully, this accident did not add to those numbers. |

This story had a happy ending. Mr. Byrne, your fast reaction to call 911 was the reason for the workers safe return home.

Congrats to Mr. Byrne! You, along with the Ft. Lauderdale Fire Rescue team, are a hero. Thank God that these men did not fall to their death.
Great job, everyone. Stay safe. I love the Firefighters/Paramedics. |

I am very happy to see the S-S go back and correct the earlier report these men were window-washers. No they were not and accuracy matters- a great deal.
As for The Economist, it is a waste- canceled my subscription when they got the Florida Primary dust up completely wrong. |

No person especially a teacher would say such thing. For all you know these two workers could be American whose skin look so tan because of the sun. |
|
|
I CANNOT do that job. I wonder how they dangle like that and not freak out.
|

These guys were "working" for a living, at a dangerous job no less, NOT on public assistance...give em a break you BIGOT! You're probably a lier too since I doubt (or hope) that you're NOT a teacher. |
|
What the heck are you talking about? There was no crime committed here! and because you want to move to some condo in Davie where they don't allow blacks, you're not only a DUFUS but a BIGOT too! |

You know when you have a scab and you keep picking at it and it won't go away? Well, that's what you are doing when you respond to these posters. Ignore them and they will slowly fade away.

Typical ignorant, brainless comment... Get a life!!! |

Oh great, now the scaffolds are in cahoots with the collapsing cranes! The humanity!

Typical Florida minorities. Smoking dope on the job and making a mess

Mr Byrne....you are a hero. You didn't give up on this guy and stayed with it til the rescuers arrived. Good karma will come back to you.
