Nice try guys, it's all the Mexican's fault for getting themselves killed because of their belief in God, it wasn't because Cal/OSHA only shows up AFTER the tradgedy or because the employer didn't care enough about his crew's safety-nope, this was naive Mexicans and God's fault!

Let's try again: many if not most farm injuries are NOT reported because of the immigration status of the worker, which is the same reason they don't gripe about safety or bad working/living conditions. The "Si Dios queire" thing comes into play more as a way to deal with tradgedy than as some sort of rational for not being safe, again, nice try on blaming it on the culture. The real problem I have seen over many years of working with a wide variety of campesinos is many come from backgrounds that include little understanding of complex mechanical devices and how to work on them due to little training on and exposure to them.

The fact that driveshaft guards are selling like hotcakes around here says a lot of growers have NOT been doing a proper job of protecting their employees, so again, let's remember who could have prevented this sad event. Maybe growers have too much faith in insurnace companies-sounds like a cultural thing to me!

Bridging the cultural gap may not be best in the long run.
By teaching the workers in Spanish they may not be getting the terminology they need to fully understand the dynamics of the safety course. Just as all avionics courses are taught in English, the OSHA course should be no different. whenever a Pilot-to-be trains for the safe handling of an aircraft, regardless of his mother tongue, he must Learn English before his license is issued. It would only behoove the Mexicans to drop their tongue. And use the language that facilitates communication. I refrained from using english when i went to Mexico. And we Americans do expect the same courtesy when the shoe is on the other foot.

Teach them in English.

jeeze guys, the man is dead because the boss didn't want to spend a FEW DOLLARS on a drive shaft cover, hell, a bent-over piece of tin would have saved his life-there was no language problem here! Yes, pilots need to know english, but we are talking mainly about men from rural Mexico who likely didn't have much schooling, it would be nice if they were fluent in english but again, it wouldn't have saved this poor man's life, but proper and REQUIRED safety equipment would! Shame on the owner and shame on Cal/OSHA!

Hey dude, what is your solution to the problem?
Mexicans speak Mexican. People from Spain (etc.) speak Spanish. In the U.S. it is Eglish,
all-be-it not the Queens Eglish.

Remember a common language is the glue that binds a society.

That aside it is a tragedy this man lost his life
in an industrial accident. Safety has to be proactive, not reactive.
Oh define what a "BOS" meeting is.

I assume that dill-hole-know will be the one wearing the clown suit, i'll keep an eye out for you on Tuesday pal. Back to the drinking again dill-hole? Kind of shows in the writing, and the non-linear thought process that prompts it!
I expressed sympathy from the beginning of this tragic event and started this thread in an attempt to re-focus the blame where it belongs-on the owner of the pump that killed this poor man, but maybe next time when I try to right a wrong I'll have to remember that dill-hole-know doesn't understand sarcasm so I'll have to keep it simple in order for it to keep up
with the rest of us. Your welcome!
