Union: Bugs invaded police headquarters

Full story: Stamford Advocate

The Stamford Police Department has a major bug problem. Because of birds nesting in the soffit that runs around the exterior of the police department's Bedford Street headquarters, police union officials said bird mites, deer ticks, spiders and other pests have infested the first floor of the department.

These officers should be outraged working under those conditions. Since the city isn't taking care of the problem there's only one thing to do: QUIT!

Use Union Funds and hire an exterminator! Really weird story. Sounds in the ceiling could be mice or nesting birds that got in somehow. Again, hire an exterminator and then bill the city. Take action.

Your comment is witty - the only real question is why you even bothered to steal VoxPops name, rather than making up your own name like the rest of us???

I pass the police station almost daily and there's no question that eaves (which are in disrepair) are infested with bird nests (probably invasive starlings and/or Englsih Sparrows, and have been for sometime.

It is outrageous that any city employee should have to put up with the conditions in that building. May be we should move the mayor in for a couple of months.

Just Curious

How about the asbestos, mold and mildew inside the building? The firing range range has enough lead contamination to build a ship.

Message to taxpayers from the police union: We want a new headquarter and we want it NOW. So do we take out bonds to build one and where do we build one? I think that the drug store, chinese restaurant, laundromat, across the street is a perfect location, yet it may require taking by public domain.

While the new facility is being built where do the officers go? I noticed a few police sub stations across the city, yet they appear to not being used. Are taxpayers being billed for this non-usage? The new police facility should have at least three to four floors, in order to compensate for long term use. This would also allow for sufficient proper parking for police vehicles. Building a small parking garage on the spot currently served by Key Bank could also provide the employees with parking for private vehicles and for citizens to finally have proper access to the building.

We can always seek a matching grant from the federal govt, yet that still will not eliminate the need of taking out a bond.

I would presume that any illnesses from these bugsare going to be considered comp or on the job injuries. the city is sitting on a powderkeg of potential claims unless they fix the problem.

You can bet chief Larrabee is not going to shoulder the cost? He has no ties to the city and wil probably move on when his contract is up.

If the police have been trying to fix this for years, maybe Malloy should have held back from creating his greenway and taken care of his finest, first. The money that Malloy has spent on this project could have gone a long way to rememdy this problem. Now the town will have to pay for the long term consequences of their police officers contracting Lyme Disease. If these fellows fail to resolve their disease and have to go on disability , who will pick up the tab for their treatment and such? The tax payer. And all because Malloy was trying to feather his cap, run for Governor and failed to take care of this situation.Shameful man and a terrible Mayor. I really feel for those police officers. Their plight may be a life of pain and hurt. Not a nice disease. A note to the police who were bitten: do not go to that hospital associated with that prestigious University in New Haven, You may rue the day you do that. Find one of the best Lyme doctors you can who doesn't belong to the Infectious Disease Society and run and I mean run to them as fast as you can and get treated by someone who 'really' understands this disease. Good Luck.

There's a vacant building in the heart of the city and owned by the city. It's the old Town Hall with a milti-million facelift and no one to lease it to. Seems to me it would make for a perfect Police Station. And, a PD presence would get rid of the trash in Vet's Park and Columbus Park.

Or maybe month, these frikkin cops always have to cry about something. Take a close look at the timing of these revelations of late, just when things quiet down a bit they reach into the bitch box and pull out another issue.

Tell them to grow a set of balls, buy a can of raid and deal with it. If it gets too bad let them use the guns I paid for.

And by thw way, according to the headline here arent they union bugs anyway?
