A third party simply has to get involved in lower levels of government first. Then work up to higher levels. Then they can effect change. As it is, with third parties unable to participate in presidential debates and electors part of a two in one party system, they can't elect a third party president. Social Security cannot collapse. There are laws and so Social Security will remain solvent for another fifty years unless ignorant people listen to right wing nuts and allow them to do away with the public system opting for the private marketplace where bankers and brokers invest all those billions and watch all that money disappear into mail boxes on the Cayman Islands and secret numbered accounts in Switzerland leaving the poor poor and making the rich richer.

Bush Jr and the right wing congress tried to privatize Social Security for the entire eight years. Imagine how bad we would be off right now had the democrats allowed that to happen. The markets collapsed and if not for the social safety nets created by democrats after the great depression, we would be forming soup lines today. Well just us working folks.
