Republican senators who voted against the measure Monday complained they lacked enough time to study it, but Reid accused them of catering to tea party conservatives who oppose virtually any increased government spending, especially when proposed by the Obama administration.
"It's time for Republicans to prove -- for the first time this Congress -- that they are willing to put politics aside for the good of the American people," Reid concluded. Good luck with that. |

Damn Wall Street, that was not the motto for the last two years and to a lesser extent the last four years since the 2010 elections. I am still waiting to understand the healthcare law passed. And if we get screwed, the Dems will be screwed. Meanwhile we have to make sure that the boomers don't screwed out of their social security by both parties. |

To the point, if it was 2007, FEMA would already have had their money. Don't expect too much happening until 2012, lame duck politicians 'till then. |

Smugglers? What smugglers? Gibson Guitars did not "smuggle" their untreated wood products into this Country as they had permission from India to purchase the untreated wood from India. The Government "issue" is the word "untreated". Our Government wants the wood treated in India, then shipped to the USA. Gibsons's own AMERICAN workers treated the untreated wood, which is what our Government doesn't want. In other words, our own Government would prefer that Indians did the work and not Americans. Rather unfriendly toward our "JOB" efforts, wouldn't you say? |
|
A FOX News overdose or did you just wing it? September 2, 2011: 3:55 PM ET The latest raid revolves around a trade issue. The wood was allegedly exported illegally because it was unfinished and too thick to be a veneer, the only unfinished wood India allows to be shipped, according to a Justice Department affidavit. Why the U.S. government would enforce an Indian trade law can be explained by century-old legislation called the Lacey Act, which mandates that American companies observe the laws of foreign countries in the trade of many animal parts, plants and their products, including wood, which was added to the act three years ago. money.cnn.com/2011/09/02/smallbusiness/gibson... - Cached |

Isn't that what I just said? Unfinished wood. And it is my understanding that the Indian Government approved of this purchase and sent the "unfinished wood" to Gibson. In turn, the US Government decides to enforce this "Lacy Act" where India (the Seller) and Gibson (The Purchaser) have no problem with the transaction as is. The issue, again, is not the wood, but the "unfinished" wood. Had the wood been treated in India (by Indians) and then shipped, there would be no problem. However, since Gibson (American Workers) treated the wood in the USA, it is now a problem. And when was the last time the USA enforced this "Lacy Act"? Was it because Gibson is a non-union employer? Really. It smells more of politics than it does of justice, in my humble opinion. |

The unfinished wood which is illegal, arrived in the USA labeled "Finished" Finger Boards. They were trying to sneak them past customs by mislabeling them. It was labeled as veneer and finisher guitar parts. It was not veneer and it was not finished guitar parts. That is smuggling. This is the second time Gibson has gotten it trouble for it. As far as your contention that we should be protecting American workers instead of Indian workers that is a totally different issue and I am for getting rid of many of our existing agreements with other Countries that put American workers at a disadvantage. On that issue it would appear that we are in agreement. But the fact is that this arose out of a routine customs inspection at the port of entry that found mislabeled illegal merchandise. Those who are trying to paint this as a partisan attack directed by the President are being absurd, disingenuous, and completely dishonest in their attacks on the President. |
The act added the wood clause only three years ago. The article doesn't make it clear on who might be at fault. Gibson ordered it, it was shipped. Did they send the wrong shipment? Did they specifically order that wood? Why didn't customs catch it? Maybe they did and let it go to catch the recipient? It raises more questions than answers. It should now be up the Indian government to find out why it's letting it's resources be exploited. I don't think it was political. |
