Regarding New Orleans, a silk purse can't be made out of sow's ear, and regarding FEMA, one can't expect to get any more out of a pig than a grunt.(Since we're talking government here, I think of pork.)

Don't you think that the hurricane in New Orleans was on a slightly different scale to this year's earthquake in VA?

Our state government knew or should have known that they may not get FEMA assistance for smaller natural disasters. Why then is there no State fund to assist? What has the State done since the earthquake to make sure this cannot happen again?

My best guess besides nothing is to look the other way when tragedy happens. But if I read your grammar right I don't think the state can stop earthquakes. I could be wrong, they have been known to decimate peoples lives.

FEMA is there for "big" natural disasters, like Joplin Mo., or all the devastation left behind from Irene in the Northeast, not a few cracked foundations or chimney's. Thousands completely lost their homes,and every piece of evidence that they even had existed, and the insurance companies turned their backs on them. Try to understand having a $300,000.00 home, paying insurance premiums for 40 years on that home, never making a claim and then have a 1,000 year event come along and wipe it off the map. Homes were not in a flood plain, were not required to have flood insurance, and because they didn't, insurance will not pay. Then comes along FEMA, and the most they can offer is $30,000.00, and you can not rebuild in a "flood plain", which means give up you land of 40 years. Moral of this story, suck it up Virginia, it could be worse.

I believe you may want to do a little more research on the damage in Louisa County, VA before leaving a comment that shows you know NOTHING about the damage there...."a few cracked foundations or chimneys"....how we wish it were so.....the damage is currently estimated at $81.3 million and more than 1300 homes have damage and some cannot be lived in....not to mention that we lost our ONLY high school, and 1 out of 4 elementary schools, and they still have more than 300 homes that have not been assessed yet.....there are children who have been displaced from their homes AND schools.....and by the way....while I feel for EVERY family in the other situations that you mentioned....I believe there are some in Louisa County who would give anything for that same $30,000 offer from FEMA.....and out of the 1,300 homes damaged, it is estimated that only 2% of those folks had earthquake insurance.....it is just not offered most of the time.....I do not have any damage to my home thankfully, but my children's school schedule is all messed up, and though the county is doing everything they can to still get everyone educated, I still feel the crazy schedule that they have will be harmful to many of the kids' education for at least this year.....and I can HONESTLY tell you that before Aug. 23rd, I had no idea that I lived on a fault line....nor was earthquake insurance EVER mentioned to me when I bought homeowner's insurance.....but I guess somehow, I (and so many others in the county) should have been able to predict this once in a lifetime natural disaster and been more prepared.....even if scientists can't!!!!

And BTW....we were hit by Irene....4 days after the earthquake....we were enduring aftershocks in the dark!!!! We certainly did not have the types of damages that others did from Irene....not claiming we did....but there was damage just the same. Do we want to add on to that the tornado that touched down in the county last Thursday, miles from where 600 elementary school students were being taught in their MOBILE UNITS because of the earthquake.....what about the 43 recorded aftershocks (the latest being 3 days ago) that continue to cause further damage to homes and businesses that have still not been fixed......my point is....don't speak about a situation that you really have NO CLUE about!!!!

FEMA aid is largely discretionary with the Office of the President. The purpose of the FEMA Individual Aid program is to provide individual homeowners assistance for uninsured losses.
In 2001, the Office of the President provided individual assistance for property damage in an Alaska earthquake. In 2002, the same individual aid was provided by the Office of the President for property damage from an earthquake in Albany NY.
Homeowners in Virginia are facing $18.3 million dollars in uninsured losses. The major damage claims average $72,000/home the others average $8,500/home. These are health and safety issues and not cosmetic damage claims. Private efforts have raised over $200,000, but this is a very small drop in a very large bucket against $18.5 million.
In Virginia we are Democrats, Republicans and Independent voters. We all pay the same federal taxes for the FEMA Aid; wouldn't it be fair if we all received the same federal benefit for those federal taxes?
The easiest way to create American jobs in the private sector is to use the federal funding to put Americans to work rebuilding the homes of taxpaying Americans.

I am glad to hear you have no damage to your home. Amended estimates are about $18.3 million in losses to private homes alone. Senator Mark Warner (D-VA); Senator James Webb (D-VA); Va. Senator Edd Houck (D); Del. Bill Janis (R) and Congressman Eric Cantor (R-VA) have all provided money, time and support to the effort. Governor McDonnell and Secretary of Public Safety Marla Decker have worked tirelessly to provide the necessary applications to FEMA through VDEM.

On October 17, 2011, the Louisa Board of Supervisors passed the broadest tax relief possible for those who suffered property losses. A referendum measure to support and fund capital improvements to public safety and education through levy of a meals tax will be on the ballot on November 8, 2011. These efforts are important but represent only a small drop in a large bucket of costs. Federal aid is the only single source of aid capable of handling losses of this magnitude. We are confident that the Office of the President will consider our appeal for Individual Aid, will reconsider based on new information and will fund this relief just as the Office of the President did in 2001 for smaller claims in Alaska from earthquake damage and in 2003 in Albany, NY for losses from earthquake.

Why is every one wanting a government handout ? If you did not have proper and sufficient insurance coverage, tough luck. Its about time the citizens quit looking for a handout for every natural disaster in the country. Small government and less spending.
