BMS GUY IS FULL OF BS THE COSTS THEY ARE TRYING TO SUPPOSEDLY RECOOP IS FOR THE OVER 1600 LOBBYISTS THEY HAVE IN WASHINGTON LINING THE POCKETS OF OUR SENATORS AND REPRESENTATIVES. WHEN I CAN BUY GENUINE PLAVIX MANUFACTURED IN THE SAME PLANT AND IN THE SAME BOTTLE BY BRISTOL SQUIBB IN CANADA FOR 1/3 TOTAL COST OF WHAT MY CO PAY IS FOR PLAVIX IN THE US. SOMETHING IS DEFINITELY ROTTEN IN DENMARK. BIG DRUG COMPANIES ARE NOT THE SAVIORS BMS SAYS THEY ARE BUT RAPING THE AMERICAN PUBLIC & INSURANCE COMPANIES BY CHARGING UNGODLY PRICES WHEN THE CANADIAN COMPANIES MAKE A PROFIT AND 1/3 THE PRICE OR LESS.

Sorry to hear that. My 85 year old mother has paid extremely high prices for Plavix for 10+ years now. She had open heart surgery recently. Plavix has truly helped her but it's a shame that Bristol-Myers continues to block the generics. Generics can help all individuals, employers and the government lower the escalating costs of medicines and health care. If the generic companies can produce the medicine for far less then also the BIG companies could do as well.
I agree with you, if they can make generic medi, so Big companies can lower the prices

About two years ago, when generic Plavix hit pharmacies in the US, I could get it for a $15 co-pay. Now that I have no insurance, at Wal-Mart, I pay $154 for 30 pills.

I thought Apotex had a license agreement with BMS to make/sell the generic, but that the license was defective in some way, thus it being pulled from the US market.

Even a company like Apotex can't just create a generic...they had to have the original formula, which could only come from BMS (in order to get approval even in Canada/Mexico).

BMS is entitled to recoup their investment in R&D, approvals, manufacturing, marketing, etc. But they could spread it out over a longer period to help in keeping prices reasonable. It would go a long way in helping to clean up an already tarnished image that drug companies have. And they could do it for ALL drugs.

What has kept Plavix so expensive is BMS having to defend the bad press it gets for side-effects.

Just to let you know. My husband just finished an experimental trial with a new drug that makes plavix look very bad. Not only did he not bleed to death every time he cut himself there was virtually no bruising when he hurt himself. He had been on Plavix before for a year and as a nursing student I can tell you he bruised and bleed very badly. On this new drug for the last year he did not bruise at all. That is how I knew he was on the experimental drug. My hubby is in construction and he was so happy with this new drug. Now he just ended the trial and his doc said Plavix will have to come down to a very low cost or they won't make it with the new drug coming out next year. So there is hope!! Just wish I knew which company was producing the drug I would buy stock in the company!! Oh by the way My hubby got paid $150.00 for his part in the trial. How much will the company make off my hubbies time?

New molecules? What? Do you mean compounds? Saving lives and running a successful business force pharmaceutical companies to develop new compounds, not generics. Pirates and scavengers like Apotex only motivate Pharma to hire more lawyers.
Listen. There is ignorance and voluntary ignorance. I can help the former but not the latter. I've given documented facts, but obviously I'm not swaying opinions, and frankly I didn't expect too. I guess we will all just have to agree to disagree.
Well I bid you all ado. Have a great holiday season.
Wish us luck in January at the trial!

Just hit the "gap" in Blue Cross. Egads! I'd like to make all management of APOTEX pay double what we have to pay for Plavix. Greed is an awful thing. No wonder our economy is in trouble!

well, here's one less "normal person" to sympathise with the poor drug companies when I die because I can't afford to pay for their R & D, "BMS guy."

My husband has been on Plavix for a little over 7 years. We were able to go "generic" for ONE WHOLE 30-DAY prescription...gee, that really helped financially (sarcasm)!! What the heck?! How LONG is it going to take before Plavix becomes generic? He thinks he'll be buried before then...I think it will be longer! Thanks Bristol-Myers.......and that comes sarcastically and whole-heart(attack)edly from my husband! Maybe you need to have one before you can actually "feel" his pain!!

wHY DON'T YOU JUST TAKE THE 'M' OUT OF YOUR NAME, IT WOULD BE MUCH MORE ACCURATE?
Nobody is saying that a company is not entitled to make a profit, just that gouging is not nice.
If I make a product that doesn't work right or sell well, will I double or triple the price on the one I make that does both of those things? A resounding 'no'. I will just be more careful about what I do, so that I don't have to take losses in the future.

The company has spent billions, and continues to spend billions on producing life saving drugs. The industry as a whole spends 22 BILLION dollars a year on producing life saving drugs. Not every drug produced is a blockbuster. As a matter of fact RX man, only 1 in every 5-10 thousand compounds make it to the shelf. For example, a drug which 500 million was spent on over a 13 year period, could be shot down by the FDA. What do you think pays for the research that went into it? That's right, a large portion of the profits from Plavix. You make it sound like BMS and others come up with an idea for a drug, pay 500 million and then start counting the money rolling in. Very ignorant. 1 in every 5 dollars of revenue in the Pharma industry goes to R&D. Not only that, the HIGH costs you and others speak of... well guess what? Five to seven cents on the healthcare dollar are spent to pay for pharmaceuticals for out patients... THAT'S IT.
You and others who prescribe to the incorrect notion that Big Pharma is just out to rape the human population, really need to put it all in perspective. Large and broad investments are made by these companies to produce drugs that save lives that do not turn much of a profit (i.e. Atripla). So, take your "shameful" speach to someone who doesn't know better.
Keep supporting pirates like Apotex and watch the pipelines disappear. RX man, I'm sure you will be first in line to say, "if we can put a man on the moon, why can't we cure cancer?" Well pal, go ask thieves like Apotex why because we don't have any money to research it.
