Appeals court rebuffs challenge of Oregon's domestic partnership law
Oregonians won't vote this fall on the state's new domestic partnership law, which gives gay couples many of the same legal benefits of marriage, a federal appeals court ruled Thursday. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected a lawsuit that sought to force a vote on the law, which was approved in 2007 Oregon Legislature and went into effect earlier this year.

Gay-rights opponents sought to use the decision as a rallying cry.
"Today's 9th Circuit decision perfectly illustrates why, in November, we need to elect conservative legislators and state officials who respect our values, our democracy and Oregon's Constitution, which clearly defines marriage," said Craig Myers, a spokesman for Concerned Oregonians. Gee, it sure sounds to me like the judge respected the decisions of the bureaucrats carrying out the will of the legislature. Those are the same people who scream about judges overstepping their authority when they overrule regulations that they like. |
