I always get a laugh when passing by Joe's Sun Bar and Grill and looking at the banner stating ranked Playboy magazines topp 100 bars in the country, when was this in the 80's?
I know. That cracks me up too. If that is one of the Top 100 college bars in the country, I would hate to see what the other 99 look like. Seriously, if you have ever been to a decent college bar, they you know that the Sun is nothing more than a dive bar that happens to be located near a campus.

Ok Refried, you are right. The South side of the strip HAS actually been improved upon. The North side is blighted, pending building projects or not.
And Robin...
Why do you so strongly support the business owners on the North side of the ZipStrip? I do not wholeheartedly support the U of A, but I cannot support the owners in their fabricated "David v. Goliath" fight.
For me, the common sense thing to do from the owners side would have been to proactively approach the university at first whiff of the project announcement and discuss payment options, moving options, even future space in the new retail complex. Maybe all this legal wrangling wouldve been prevented. The properties these people own are their livelihood, yes that I do understand. I am not supporting the closing of the businesses. However, it seems the owner of the Odd Corner had no problem moving his business across the street and to nicer confines too. I do know he publically withdrew any support for the U of A; so be it. But he didnt tie up our court system and waste tax dollars for months on end in an effort to fight for his business. He was practical in mindset and decided to establish a new business footprint. And after a recent trip to Akron, the new location seems to be a vast improvement upon the previous location.
Guess I am wearing rose-colored glasses. I only would like to see some common sense arise in involved parties' eyes instead of dollar signs.
On a side note, doesnt it seem strange that the whole North side of the ZipStrip is soley Nemer owned?
Sorry, I guess I just value individual property rights a little more highly than others...or, I just gave up most good thoughts when dealing with 800 pound gorillas a la universities a long time ago. Their histories are replete with their attempts to distance themselves from any and all emplooyee rights associated with public(governmental) employment until they want to hide behind the likes of eminent domain, yet their sole mantra during such sonsideratins is "preservation of the institution". Additionally, all of the "reasonable" actions you've suggested the Nemers "might" have taken have been reported in the ABJ as attempts on their part at accomodation. Now, if you want to talk about someone(?) wasting the tax-payers money, why don't we just observe the good old U. of A. management-weenies for a moment, eh?

To start off with, they absolutely had to have the Nemer's property for their "public use" project, so much so that they did, indeed, try to obtain it through eminent domain. Now, if the need was so real, why are Doc Proenza and the Board-of-Trustee-weenies seeking to be able to back out of said action just because they don't like how the courts have ruled??? For gawd's sake! We're paying for their lawyers and the court system? What makes them think they are entitled to abuse the system so blithley?

Once again, the proposed stadium and, possibly, "much" of it's associated parking, might barely be considered a "public use", depending on what economic philosophies one follows. The provision of a mere 450 individual rental units is not, especially as that is what many of the properties obtained by the Universtiy were! Sigh...which is why the University tried to bring it in "under the radar" with the stadium project!

Um...I'd have to hold the Nemer's contributions/investments to the Akron area in higher esteem than those of someone who doesn't even own a house in the area, eh?

Well, har-dee-har-har...brain-fart! When was the U. of A. ever ranked by a national magazine such as U.S. News & World Report(Best Colleges) as anything other than 3rd tier, alphabetically??? Um...fyi...that's a ranking just a little more than a tad out of the top 100, eh?

Well, c'mon, sweat-pea! Prove me wrong or prove me a liar, eh? You mean to tell me you haven't noticed how our local universities like to use any tiny, little, narrowly vectored bit of "good ratings" to shore up their self-seteem? Too bad the reality of more independent and objective national reviews such as those by TIME MAGAZINE, U.S. News & World Report or Forbes don't back up the universities' brag as opposed to the facts!

And yet the Nemers are to be ridiculed for seeking to benefit from the same type of accolades? Tell me, oh great obiwan-of-pseudonyms, would you consider a poll conducted by Playboy to have more significance than a Northcoast-99 Award or one from the Princeton Review? Or, just possibly, might you have to put them all in an order answering to the greater scheme of things?
