If you have a kid that cant read at that age you are doing something wrong - why dontcha get off the computer and teach that babygirl how to read??? you got alot of nerve criticizing when you dont even do your job as a parent
Listen missy, you dont know anything about me. My daughter was adopted and the PUBLIC schools fail to admit she has a problem because it will ruin their perfect scores with this retarded state I live it. All my children graduated with honors and the one that I did not give birth too is struggling and I have tried to teach her. But I can only suppliment her with my own intellegence which is something you lack severly.

Reiane -- If you have a kid who can't read in the fifth grade, it is possible, even likely, that the child has an unidentified learning disability. I have three grown children. Our youngest is still struggling with written language, in his twenties, because he is is ADHD and dyslexic.
We had to FIGHT with the District to have his disabilities confirmed. Our child was REQUIRED to FAIL at least one year of school before the District would even consider the possibility of a learning disability.
I did what I could, to supplement what our son was getting in school. But, the school concentrated on what he CAN do, when the school should have been trying to turn CAN'T do into 'Can Do'.
It's not a parental failure. It's a FAILURE on the part of the District.
Thanks for underatanding. It is the districts fault. They have tested her and say she is ok but I know she is not because of my three older kids. I try to work with her but it is a memory problem as well as learning techniques. I have done all I can to help her but it is getting harder because and things take longer and I am also working fulltime and going to school full time.

Say whateva ya want if my kid couldnt read I would feel responsible and would teach them myself - I wouldnt need a school district to label my kid to do a job that I signed up to do the day I gave birth - its not a failure on the part of the district - its outright laziness and having other people do your job
its your job to raise your kid up right and teach him things and nurture him - you gave birth to him he is your responsibility - you didnt do what you could you put that monkey on someones elses back -- grow up and be a parent
So I guess I am off the hook since I didnt give birth to my daughter. She was adopted because she needed a mother to love her since hers couldnt live without crack. I am far from lazy and do a great job with my kids. Lets see where your kids will be someday. Three of mine are in college and and two more to go and I will have a well educated family. I can hardly call a mother of five kids lazy unless of course you think I am black.

There are MANY classrooms and even entire schools that you do not want your child to attend. Protect the home-schoolers and you protect your rights by having the chance to opt out of some of these hell-holes.

PUBLIC SCHOOLS HAVE TO TAKE EVERYONE. THAT INCLUDES THOSE WHO THINK DRIVE-BY SHOOTINGS ARE COOL AND THAT ALL WOMEN ARE BITC*ES. DO YOU WANT THAT?

As I believe I mentioned, I used a variety of techniques with our son. During summers, I brought home work-books on that grade level and worked with him.

During the school year, to 'supplement'(a non-existent) education, I brought in a map of the US, one year, Europe the next, etc. A different map each year. I put this on the kitchen table, under a clear plastic tablecloth.

"Mikey! Grab a towel. Wipe up the milk on Milwaukee!"

Over dinner, we would 'take a trip'. We'd start in our home town, determine how far we could drive in say, four hours. Where would we be? What state was that community in? Identify the state flag, bird, fish, flower, motto, etc. What sights are likely to be in that community? With access to the internet, you'd have only to query the chamber of commerce, or web-sites for each state, or check with other on-line sources.

That was where our 'journey' would continue, the next night. We'd use the trip-planning as a practical lesson in math,

How many miles per gallon does your car get? How far is it by road? How much is gas, per gallon? So, how much will that cost?-- if we were planning to 'go to McD's', or visit the Military museum or other tourist site along the road, how much more would it cost, and how long could we 'budget', for that activity?

as well as social studies, and, if you're feeling energetic, history, as well. This can be particularly valuable when studying state and capitol.

With the map of Europe, the Pacific, or whatever, in addition to History, we added food and other cultural contributions that have made their way into our way of life here, in America, and discussed varied manners in which these customs, etc, might have come here.
