Misuse of 'bupe' is found to be on rise

I wish you tabloids would get a sense of reality. The real story is that even when made available to a population with the disease of abusing drugs, the diversion is minimal and most of the diverted sub is used to stop cravings and withdrawal, exactly what it is for.
Limit supply of any lifesaving drug and see what happens. Less than 2% of the docs in the US are allowed to prescribe Suboxone, and many don’t take insurance. This puts it out of reach for many, who are forced to buy diverted sub to save their lives. A mother was buying it off the street for her son, because they couldn’t find a doctor to prescribe who wasn’t at their government mandated patient limit. I see as the availability goes up the price goes down, because as people are able to get it through legitimate ways they no longer need to buy it from diverted sources. WOW! Even children got a hold of some diverted sub and ALL survived, what a testament to the safety!! Imagine if sub wasn’t diverted in these cases and the child was exposed to, methadone, OxyContin, Vicodin, Percocet, Tylox, morphine, Demerol, Dilaudid, Lortab, opium, Percodan, or heroin, all alternative opioids found on the streets and unlike Sub have killed tens of thousands. Suboxone probably saved their lives. Mike |

What a great drug. Give it away free in bulk, so people can sober up and straighten out their lives. so many people are addicted to something, this should be a great help. Forget free condoms, pass this stuff out at parades and churches. The war on drugs was lost when we denied treatment and education to stop, avoid, and discourage using drugs. The AD council ads are the only message that works on kids.

This miracle drug makes so much sense and is so effective, I am sure the DEA and FDA will find some way to deny access to the people who need it most. Hooray for the people who spread it around. This drug should be front page news instead of Drew, Brittany and the Oscars!

Methadone and Bupe are both extremely good and important drugs. There are only 2 reasons people would rip their use. One is that they know NOTHING about them or they have a personal agenda.
1 of these drugs saved my life (Methadone) and the other is also used at my clinic and i have heard great things about it also. |

I wish you folks could hear yourselves talking about the abuse of "Bute" Whether legal use or illegal use, these people who are using it, are trying to kick the heroin habit, which has no legal use. Would you hunt them down for trying to get a drug that will help them. There are many reasons to buy illegally, fear of the system, inability to pay for the doctor,(Which is very costly, more than the daily cost for heroin use). So, before you judge consider their intent, which is to be clean, and healthy.

I may have been hasty in my assessment of different people's opinion of the perceived BUPE problem.
To me, and others I see, there is no damage and no problem with people buying Bupe on the street. Far better than the alternatives. If all of the city addicts bought Bupe instead of their previously prefered drug, the city would be well on it's way to being healthy. One other thing of note. If the company who manufactures this good drug would make it available at a reasonable price so people could afford to get it from a doctor, their wouldn't be a market for it on the street. |

John is right on The only reason for the DEA to exist is to look into every household in the world and punish, even when there is no harm. Let the new President eliminate the DEA.

If a person is looking to get high, Suboxone (a form of "bupe") is NOT a "fun" drug. From what I have heard, a Suboxone high is roughly equivalent to about one cup of coffee--max!
Suboxone is a combination drug which includes Naloxone. Naloxone inhibits the "high" effect, so no matter how much"bupe" (or even other narcotics!) one take, Naloxone blocks the "high" effects. In other words, a dud when it comes to "fun". This is probably one of the best drugs ever devised to counter drug abuse. I agree with John of Chicago--give the stuff away for free! |

Just to expand on your observation Frater, Bupe actually acts a little like antibuse does with alcohol. The patient using Bupe who tries to use another drug, will experience sickness. Nausea, etc.
This is not so with Methadone, the person can still get high with other drugs. Hope we can get the DEA out of these people's lives.

Once bupe is easier to get than heroin, and cheaper, that is when we know we are making progress in the "war against drugs."

We should use the vacant housing at closing military bases to shelter drug users. Give them one chance to get clean; if the fail they should be allowed to use all the confiscated drugs that are stored around the country in police custody.
No baby sitting nurse service. Just keep getting up to go down the hall to the drug station to get your next free fix, for as long as you are able. When you are no longer able, fall and die in your own vomit, you won't be missed. There is no shortage of people on this planet, and most of the non-users are getting weary of carrying you and footing the bill for you hop-head losers. There are both good drugs that are available over the counter and Prescriptions as well, but drugs thathelp those addicted to street drugs and or tobacco or alcohol should be administered by an adult and not allow children to self administer...
This article should have mentioned what the drug is it's generic and drugs that should not be taken with... It danced around the subject rather than ideas s to what would be good methods as to preventing under age persons taking the drug. The FDA sometimes is slow to find alternatives to drugs for some more expensive medications... I think this rticle was poorly put together... I agree with it's intention but making it clear and not jumping frome here to there to say what it meant. |

Surprise. Doctors overprescribing.

What, this hasn't been banned yet, for the children?

Sure, pass out another drug at taxpayers expense. Chicago has a drug problem. Living in the Detroit Metro area and, although never living in the city of Detroit proper, I've been there at least 5,000 times. Sure there were illegal drug deals going on but you never saw it in broad daylight in high rent "neighborhoods" like you do here in Chicago. Chicago has a drug problem. And you're all so concerned about cigarettes and foi gras or whateva the H*** it is? Chicago has a drug problem. Help them.

I have personally taken saboxone and can tell you all that it is NOT THE ANSWER. It is great for short term relief of opiate withdrawal and can save your life if that is what you are suffering from. However, i know a few people who have had it prescribed to them for long periods of time and it ruined there life and led to relapses when they got offit. See their are two problems with saboxon, the first being that you become dependant on it and it can be very difficult to ween off of. This means that someone prescribed to saboxon is replacing their old bad habit with a new legal bad habit. Pharmaceutical companies should be advising this drug to be used only for short term and not long term use that makes them money and screws peoples life. The second problem is that while on saboxon one becomes very lazy, highly unmotivated, and cannot do physical activity. The saboxon basically just turns you into a user of a different legal drug that masks peoples abuse problems instead of getting to the root of it. Saboxon has helped millions with short term relief (myself included) but it is not the amazing answer that everyone is looking for and should never be used for long periods of time. It can be easily abused by crushing it up or taking high dosages of it. And if you have never taken it before, you are guranteed to get violently sick from it.

If somebody dies while taking this drug as prescribed, then that's unacceptable. But if someone dies while purposely abusing this drug or taking it to get high with other drugs, then it's one less trouble maker for society to have to deal with.
Can't people take responsibility for anything anymore??? |

Seems like you are one of the few if not only persons on here to have a problem with this drug and for that i am sorry. You should hear all the crap i get for taking Methadone. I have been on it for 11 years now. I own my own business, live in a beautiful part of chicago (North Lake Shore Drive area) I have a family with 2 young children and a beautiful wife. Before I took Methadone???? I was 10 when someone (Uncle) gave me cocaine. I got hooked at 12, turned to heroin and pain pills when"Coke" was not enough. Got into a methadone clinic and the rest is history. This is a True story and i know many people like me. IF you missuse this drug or Bupe you can get into trouble. If you dont store it safetly it can kill someone that does not have a durg addiction but... for the Bunch of us that want to get off drugs it is a miracle and WILL help you lead a Great life. I do not know personally how "Bupe" works and i will never know because my life is wonderful the way it is now so i wonbt change my drug but i am sure there are many stories that are similar to mine because of that wonderful drug. |

The "BSmore Sun" is the paramount of sleazy rags. I am an avid watcher of the "The Wire" on HBO and love the fact that life imitates art as depicted in the inexorable decline of this paper in that series. The people leading the Sun have a very warped agenda. Certainly not the good of the public, in this ongoing " Bupe series" fabricated to show dangers that don't exist. I wish Donovan and Schulte and company a wonderful prolonged wait on the unemployment line in the not too distant future. Good luck finding a new position with such biased and unsubstantiated reporting. You should be ashamed of yourselves for the damage you're doing to the addict population, their families, and the citizens (crime victims) at-large of this country. Don't buy this shameful newsrag. Tell your friends!!

I think that Suboxone and other bupe products are doing a lot of good. Sure, they are being sold illegally but I think that with anything of this nature, you are going to find that going on.
I would like to add that around the Massachusetts area the out of pocket cost for Suboxone treatment is outrageous and that may have a direct effect on why people are turning to illegal purchasing of this drug instead of going through the proper channels. The drug companies and law makers might want to take that into consideration. |
