I think it is a great decision to allow the sale of birth control without perscription. I think it will help people who don't have the means for isurance, still be responsible.

If they make birth control pills available without prescription there will be MANY young girls and women NOT having the much needed pap smears and pelvic exams to maintain a healthy body.

BIG MISTAKE!!!

Birth control pills SHOULD NOT be available without a prescription.

If the smears and exams were necessary to assure that the contraceptives could be used safely, I could see the reasoning behind withholding them in lieu of an annual exam, but that isn't the case. It is not good medical practice to deprive people of medications as a form of coercion.

Not every birth control pill contains the same amount of hormones. Not every woman's body requires the same amount of hormones.

They most definitely should be deprived when their lives depend on having yearly exams. Surely, you are more intelligent than to expect the medical field to just 'hand over' birth control without being able to monitor not only the health of the woman, but also maintain and document STD's.

Do you have any idea how many women are walking around spreading the HPV virus and have no idea. I have to say this is the first UN-intelligent statement I have read from you.

BC Pills MUST be made available without a prescription. Exams are not necessary for their use. They are totally unrelated to contraception and must not be used to strong arm women into being tested.

And how do you suppose a woman is going to know which level of hormones is right for her body??? Without the proper levels they are not going to prevent pregnancy anyway.

Also....women over 35 who smoke SHOULD NOT be taking birth control. A proven serious high risk for blood clots and/or stroke. Do you think something that dangerous should be over the counter. If seeing a physician, they do a blood test and if they are still smoking the pill is not prescribed.

People that are wanting this over the counter is asking for serious health issues to start happening to our women.

Not every female can take the same pills.

Obviously you are ignorant about hormones and how they can effect a woman both physically and mentally.

Wow. That would be so great. If they were OTC I think they'd be much more affordable. Yes, I probably wouldn't be as eager to take that yearly pap smear, which is so no fun, but it would make like easier and less time consuming to get them. I've had problems this year with my pill dosage and breakthrough bleeding. The doctors don't know - I've been on three different pills this year and I still need to go back because I'm still spotting. They guess. I'm college educated. I can guess as well as they can. Anyway, I think it would be great. The more freedom women have over their own bodies, the better.

It's disappointing that some of the women on here don't think women are smart enough to take care of their health. It's ironic that so many women are in favor of limiting the rights of our own gender in making such important decisons.

I know all kinds of women who do not have these exams and have no problems. It's just a way for the doctors to make more money.

Do you have any idea how many people in general are carrying all kinds of STDs and are spreading them because they just have sex with whom ever they please. People need to have some respect for themselves and realize that if you date someone and they are pressuring you for sex then that is all they want. When they get done using you they will move on.

They could also be walking around with cervical, uterine, or ovarian cancer. It could be spreading rapidly throughout their body right now. Had they had regular pap smears it could have been treated and resolved.

You're making my points so clear. There are many women that have no idea they are carrying an STD and it is found at the yearly exams.

Knox girl, you need to have more faith in women (not girls) women to know what is best for them. Point is...if someone is that adament about not going to a doctor for their annuals....they are not going to go. But there a many women out there who aren't just sleeping around carrying all kinds of diseases, who just need birth control to help regulate their periods for other medical reasons that have all ready been established "by a doctor" ....oh lets see....like PCOS and do not have insurance, because it is so out of control that if you don't have a company willing to pay 50% or more...you cannot afford it. So if you don't have that luxury of your employer paying part of the insurance and you can't afford the $250.00 plus exam not including lab work...then you are not going to go to the doctor, not going to have birth control and then we will be paying for all these people having kids who can't afford it and the public will be paying for the costs of deliveries, healthcare and additional medications needed for the children of the women out there who didn't have the money in the first place. After which the country will just have more unwanted pregnancies, with more children being abused or given up to the system, which we pay for as well. So, give them the fucking BCP and if you are worried about catching STD's or worse, then quit sleeping around. I think the bigger concern for this country is illegal drugs, alcohol, teen pregnancy and drop out prevention, rather than an adult woman having to be required to get a pelvic exam just to get BC. If you are a minor....nothing should be done anyway without the permission of the parent. No one is going to continue taking a medication that doesn't work and causes bad side effects....they will either stop taking them or go to the doctor; but that should be their choice.....not yours. As far as STD's, women should just learn to have more respect for themselves and require their partner to wear a condom if they are sleeping around and have more than one partner.

Oh, and by the way.....I am a 38 yr. old woman who does feel annual exams are important and I respect my body enough to not sleep around, have used condoms if I am intimate, do use birth control and doesn't have insurance. You do the math.....educating women is just as important as getting exams rather than hoping to dodge bullet and continuing to take chances.

Thing is birth control doesn't really make a difference in that. I know women who are not taking birth control and they don't have the paps every year. So unless they want the birth control they can't be forced to have the pap smear. The STDs I was referring to are like aids, herpes (sp), and all the other nasty crap that is spread like wild fire due to the fact that it seems everyone just has sex with everyone they go out with.

Kind of also looks like if the ones who are sleeping around could get birth control over the counter and would use it then it would be better that way than getting pregnant and either killing the baby immediately through abortion or actually having it and then it turning out like so many of the horrible cases we have heard about lately in the news.
