The EPA is choking democracy

Full story: Chicago Tribune

One of the most important events of our lifetimes may have just transpired. A federal agency has decided that it has the power to regulate everything, including the air you breathe.

They had better watch out.

They and the current regime might just get what they want.

No profits, no commerce, no industry, no free will, no liberty.

Hey, it worked in the Soviet Union.

So this guy is for the Bush type EPA that lets anybody and everybody put any kind of pollution into the air? That is ridiculous. The current EPA, which is overturning Bush administration policies, is doing the right thing.
This writer is an idiot.

Overstating your case there a bit?

This is not overturning any previous policy.

This column's argument doesn't hold up. He argues that there are extra-governmental agencies that have the power to tax. But none of these agencies would exist without the support of at least two branches of government. And any of these agencies could be forced out of business by the Supreme Court (which isn't elected, but is certainly a huge part of our democracy!).
Want lower taxes and fewer services? Support candidates that promise to reduce size of government. But please don't try and scare me into thinking that more services - and slightly higher taxes - is a threat to democracy.

"Nominally, the Environmental Protection Agency's announcement Friday only applies to new-car emissions. But pretty much everyone agrees that the ruling opens the door to regulating, well, everything."

Just because this is an opinion article, doesn't mean you can just make stuff up.

Yes, Mr. Goldberg -- I much prefer to have companies determine the quality of the air I breathe. After all, my health and the long term well being of this country, not their own profit, is always a company's #1 concern!!

How ironic that this man is the type to call Democrats "Socialists," yet he fails to understand the most basic principle of the free market: take care of yourself first. That's why the Federal Gov't sometimes steps in -- to ensure the average person is not trampled during the rush for the almighty dollar.

It's not that complicated.

That's still the MO of the right-wing - voluntary compliance and self-regulation. It worked real well on Wall Street, didn't it? These people don't get it, and never will.

Watch Frontline's "Poisoned Waters" and see what self-regulation has done to Chesapeake Bay when it comes to the chicken farms and other agriculture.

So you're saying companies are driven by money, therefore; They're bad and we can't trust that they have our best interests in mind?

The Federal government on the other hand is driven by....what?

I guess when you say the Federal Government is there to step in and save us from "companies", you're referring to the parts of the Federal Gov. controlled by Democrats. Because Republican members are driven by greed right? Unlike the socially responsible Democrats who only care about "your health" and making the world a better place for everyone (except companies of course).

Are you sure this isn't a little bit more complicated than you thought?

What if, god forbid, a couple of our elected representatives (even the way-cool Democrats), are only PRETENDING to give a shite about your health? What if, and I'm only saying if, what if they are secretly more interested in money/power? Can you imagine the results of your blind faith if that far fetched idea was true!

Anyway. I'm sure you're right. The Democrats said they care about our health, and I'm sure they wouldn't lie, so I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it. Plus, it's not like there's all that much money riding on this decision anyway, right?.....RIGHT?

Actually, yes it does.

For example: In my opinion, the sun revolves around our perfectly flat Earth.

See how that works?

Oh.My.God!

When are you libtards gonna' get over George Bush?

I voted for him twice. He made mistakes. He probably wasn't the best president of all time. He may turn out to be the WORST president in the history of the US. He was a semi-literate, inarticulate, redneck.

But dammit, you can't keep going on excusing everything the current POTUS does by saying "Well at least he doesn't suck as much as Bush!"

I mean, grow up! He's gone. Celebrate the massive victory all you want, but for Christ's sake, open your eyes and pay attention to what President Obama and his very supportive legislative branch are doing.

Reversal of a lot of the Bush era policies is fine. But we're four months in and people are stocking up on ammo. That's not good.

Becoming mildly socialistic is one thing. Becoming Cuba would suck. Don't just focking watch it happen while blaming it all on Bush, you clown.

Daily Horoscope for May 23

Scorpio

You're in a very romantic and sentimental state today. You're also feeling quite sensitive and vulnerable, so you won't want to be around anyone you find abrasive or aggressive. If you meet someone for the first time now you'll think they're wonderful and your relationship will always involve putting them on a pedestal. But don't be too idealistic. They are human, remember!
